Book excerpt: The Lennard family of Chevening, Kent descends from a George Lennard who was living there at the time of Henry VI. His father was named John and was living in Chepsted, Kent in 1440. The Lennard family married into the Fynes and Dacre families, both of whom were lesser nobility. Upon marrying into the noble houses of Fynes and Dacre, the Lennards inherited the title of Lord Dacre. In 1674 the ninth Baron Dacre married Anne FitzRoy, illegitimate daughter of King Charles II. Charles II readily recognized her as his daughter and freely bestowed gifts to her. In this manner, Thomas, ninth Baron Dacre was made Earl of Sussex. Another branch of the Lennard family married into and took the name Barrett, as well as the title of Lord Newburgh. Descendents of the various Lennard branches may be found in England and the United States.

Book Synopsis A Brief History of the Tudor Age by : Jasper Ridley
Download or read book A Brief History of the Tudor Age written by Jasper Ridley and published by Robinson. This book was released on 2013-02-07 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the arrival of Henry Tudor and his army, at Milford in 1485, to the death of the great Queen Elizabeth I in 1603, this was an astonishingly eventful and contradictory age. All the strands of Tudor life are gathered in a rich tapestry - London and the country, costumes, furniture and food, travel, medicine, sports and pastimes, grand tournaments and the great flowering of English drama, juxtaposed with the stultifying narrowness of peasant life, terrible roads, a vast underclass, the harsh treatment of heretics and traitors, and the misery of the Plague.
Download or read book Catherine Parr written by Susan James and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2010-12-26 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Romantic, chaotic and terrifying, Catherine Parr's life unfolds like a romance novel. Married at seventeen to the grandson of a confirmed lunatic and widowed at twenty, Catherine chose a Yorkshire lord twice her age as her second husband. Caught up in the turbulent terrors of the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1536, she was captured by northern rebels, held hostage and suffered violence at their hands. Fleeing to the south shortly afterward, Catherine took refuge in the household of Princess Mary and in the arms of the king's brother-in-law, Sir Thomas Seymour. Her employment in Mary's household brought her to the attention of Mary's father, the unpredictable, often-wed Henry VIII. Desperately in love with Seymour, Catherine was forced into marriage with a king whose passion for her could not be hidden and who was determined to make her his queen.
