L'idéologie de cette association se fonde principalement sur un petit ouvrage rédigé quelques années avant la guerre civile espagnole par son fondateur. Ce petit ouvrage, Chemin est un recueil de maximes "inspirées" directement de la parole de dieu selon son auteur. Il devient très vite une véritable bible pour les membres de l'oeuvre. Institution spécifique au sein de l'église catholique l'opus dei compte aujourd'hui environ 80000 membres répartis à travers le monde dans des pays aussi différents que le Chili, le Kenya, la Pologne ou le Japon. En 1992, la béatification du fondateur a entrainé en France, et surtout en Espagne de nombreuses controverses. Considérée par ses "disciples" comme une simple association à dominance spirituelle, qui dit lutter pour un retour aux traditions séculaires de l'Eglise, qui cherche à en sauvegarder l'orthodoxie, l'Opus dei est vue de l'extérieur comme une organisation paradoxale qui allie traditionalisme et modernité et dont les activités sont critiquables du fait de son appui aux différents gouvernements du général Franco et de ses méthodes particulières. On lui reproche entre autres, son idéologie sectaire, sa stratégie, son financement, et son goût du secret. De plus, l'organisation a été impliquée dans de nombreuses affaires politico-financières ce qui a amené nombres de journalistes et de chercheurs à lui donner le nom de "pieuvre" ou de "sainte mafia". Ainsi, la définition de l'Opus dei dépend de nombreux éléments qui parfois semblent se contredire. Cette association prend sa force au coeur de ce paradoxe qu'elle même-entretient.

Popkin in Marsh's Library on July 7-8, 1994. It was one of the most stimulating events held in the Library in recent years. Although we have hosted many special seminars on such subjects as rare books, the Huguenots, and Irish church history, this was the first time that a seminar was held which was specifically related to the books in our own collection. It seems surprising that this type of seminar has never been held before although the reason is obvious. Since there is no printed catalogue of the Library scholars are not aware of its contents. In fact the collection of books by late seventeenth and early eighteenth century European authors on, for example, such subjects as biblical criticism, political and religious controversy, is one of the richest parts of the Library's collections. Some years ago we were informed that of the 25,000 books in Marsh's at least 5,000 English books or books printed in England were printed between 1640 and 1700.

Nor does the premise that organisms defend themselves at the cellular or molecular levels. For nearly two thousand years “immunity,” a legal concept invented in ancient Rome, serves almost exclusively political and juridical ends. “Self-defense” also originates in a juridico-political context; it emerges in the mid-seventeenth century, during the English Civil War, when Thomas Hobbes defines it as the first “natural right.” In the 1880s and 1890s, biomedicine fuses these two political precepts into one, creating a new vital function, “immunity-as-defense.” In A Body Worth Defending, Ed Cohen reveals the unacknowledged political, economic, and philosophical assumptions about the human body that biomedicine incorporates when it recruits immunity to safeguard the vulnerable living organism. Inspired by Michel Foucault’s writings about biopolitics and biopower, Cohen traces the migration of immunity from politics and law into the domains of medicine and science. Offering a genealogy of the concept, he illuminates a complex of thinking about modern bodies that percolates through European political, legal, philosophical, economic, governmental, scientific, and medical discourses from the mid-seventeenth century through the twentieth. He shows that by the late nineteenth century, “the body” literally incarnates modern notions of personhood. In this lively cultural rumination, Cohen argues that by embracing the idea of immunity-as-defense so exclusively, biomedicine naturalizes the individual as the privileged focus for identifying and treating illness, thereby devaluing or obscuring approaches to healing situated within communities or collectives.
