Book excerpt: Avec le développement des bases de données en général et des entrepôts de données en particulier, il est devenu très important de réduire les tâches d'administration des systèmes de gestion de base de données. Les systèmes auto-administratifs ont pour objectif de s'administrer et de s'adapter eux-mêmes, automatiquement, sans perte ou même avec un gain de performance. L'idée d'utiliser des techniques de fouille de données pour extraire des connaissances utiles à partir des données stockées pour leur administration est une approche très prometteuse, notamment dans le domaine des entrepôts de données, où les requêtes sont très hétérogènes et ne peuvent pas être interprétées facilement. L'objectif de cette thèse est d'étudier les techniques d'auto-administration des entrepôts de données, principalement des techniques d'optimisation des performances, comme l'indexation et la matérialisation de vues, et de rechercher une manière d'extraire des données elles-mêmes des connaissances utilisables pour appliquer ces techniques. Nous avons réalisé un outil qui recommande une configuration d'index et de vues matérialisées permettant d'optimiser le temps d'accès aux données. Notre outil effectue une recherche de motifs fréquents fermés sur une charge donnée et une classification non supervisée des requêtes de la charge pour construire cette configuration d'index et de vues. Nous avons également couplé la sélection d'index et de vues matérialisées afin de partager efficacement l'espace de disque alloué pour stocker ces structures. Enfin, nous avons appliqué les principes développés dans le cadre relationnel aux entrepôts de données XML. Nous avons proposé une structure d'index précalculant les jointures entre les faits et les dimensions XML et adapté notre stratégie de sélection de vues pour matérialiser des vues XML.

Le premier cherche à améliorer la précision du modèle de coût. Lors de l'optimisation physique, il est important de savoir évaluer de manière assez précise le nombre de pages mémoires auxquelles il faut accéder lors d'un accès disque. Ce nombre de pages dépend bien évidemment en premier lieu du nombre d'éléments (n-uplets ou objets selon que l'on soit dans un système objet ou relationnel) que l'on cherche. Il dépend également de la répartition de ces éléments. Différents types d'éléments sont stockés dans une base de données. Toutefois, il existe une logique qui les fait coexister dans la même base. En général, il existera donc une corrélation entre les différents types de données stockées dans la base. Pour être précis, il faudra prendre en compte cette corrélation quand nous ferons notre évaluation. Notre modélisation prend en compte tous ces paramètres pour calculer l'évaluation du nombre de pages. Le deuxième outil se situe au niveau de l'optimisation logique. Le schéma est un élément central de la base de données. En effet, il permet entre autre de renseigner l'utilisateur sur le contenu de la base de données. Les bases de données semi-structuréesn'imposent pas un schéma préalablement établi des données. En effet, celles-ci étant intégrées de l'extérieur, on ne peut leur imposer une forme prédéfinie. L'utilisateur n'ayant de schéma pour l'aider à formuler sa question, celle-ci pourra donc être assez évasive ou incomplète. Nous développons dans la deuxième partie de cette thèse une structure qui permet la réécriture d'une requête incomplète dans une forme plus classique

Book excerpt: Resource Description Framework (or RDF, in short) is set to deliver many of the original semi-structured data promises: flexible structure, optional schema, and rich, flexible Universal Resource Identifiers as a basis for information sharing. Moreover, RDF is uniquely positioned to benefit from the efforts of scientific communities studying databases, knowledge representation, and Web technologies. As a consequence, the RDF data model is used in a variety of applications today for integrating knowledge and information: in open Web or government data via the Linked Open Data initiative, in scientific domains such as bioinformatics, and more recently in search engines and personal assistants of enterprises in the form of knowledge graphs. Managing such large volumes of RDF data is challenging due to the sheer size, heterogeneity, and complexity brought by RDF reasoning. To tackle the size challenge, distributed architectures are required. Cloud computing is an emerging paradigm massively adopted in many applications requiring distributed architectures for the scalability, fault tolerance, and elasticity features it provides. At the same time, interest in massively parallel processing has been renewed by the MapReduce model and many follow-up works, which aim at simplifying the deployment of massively parallel data management tasks in a cloud environment. In this book, we study the state-of-the-art RDF data management in cloud environments and parallel/distributed architectures that were not necessarily intended for the cloud, but can easily be deployed therein. After providing a comprehensive background on RDF and cloud technologies, we explore four aspects that are vital in an RDF data management system: data storage, query processing, query optimization, and reasoning. We conclude the book with a discussion on open problems and future directions.
