Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the eyeball is indented in total darkness, within less than 200 mil liseconds an oval or quarter-moon shaped spot of light is perceived in the part of the visual field corresponding to the indented region of the retina. In the seconds following, this phosphene extends across the whole visual field and alters in structure during further eyeball indentation. It is then seen as irregular large bright spots of light, finely structured moving light grains ('light nebula') and stationary bright stars. Regular geometrical patterns appear only when both eyes are indented simultaneously [1]. When the eyeball deformation is released, part of the retina again lights up for another one or two seconds and curved light lines are seen following the course of the larger retinal vessels (Fig. 1). In the following we will review the history of this phenomenon, which played an important role during the first 2200 years of vision theories and in the development of models to explain normal vision. 2. Pre-Socratic philosophers, Plato and Aristotle Alcmaeon of Croton (6-5th century B. C. ), who was a member of the Pythagoraean sect and one of the founders of Greek medicine, was the first to describe mechanical deformation of the eyeball leading to light sensa tions. According to Aristotle's pupil Theophrast of Eresos, Alcmaeon report ed that 'the eye obviously has fire within, for when the eye is struckfireflashes out' [2, p. 88].

Book Synopsis Embryology of the Eye and Its Adnexa by : Y. Robert Barishak
Download or read book Embryology of the Eye and Its Adnexa written by Y. Robert Barishak and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph, unlike most previously published books on the subject, approaches the embryology of the eye and its adnexae from the perspective of gestational age, providing a unique overall view of the various structures of the eye at different stages of prenatal development. Embryogenesis, organogenesis and differentiation are three main periods that can be distinguished in the prenatal development of the human eye. The chapters in this book describe in detail the series of sequential events that occur during these periods from the fertilization of the ovum to, and after, birth. Superbly illustrated and clearly written, this text contains a wealth of information for residents in ophthalmology, neonatal and pediatric ophthalmologists, as well as for all ophthalmologists and physicians interested in developmental anomalies.

Download or read book Pathology of the Eye written by G.O.H. Naumann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1025 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is indeed a pleasure to write a foreword for this spectacular book which represents a landmark in the history of ocular pathology. Not since the three volumes of the Henke-Lubarsch handbook appeared forty years ago has anything like this come on the market. This book represents a compre hensive, thorough and up-to-date clinically oriented textbook on ocular pathology. We are all indebted to the senior author, who is now professor of ophthal mology at the University of Erlangen, who presents us here with the fruit of decades of industrious endeavors. We also have to be grateful to the American ophthalmic pathologist, Dr. David Apple, who, as one of the main collaborators of the German edition, has now provided us with the English translation. The book has a twofold purpose: First, it is meant to be a source of instruction for ophthalmologists and pathologists. For that purpose it is beautifully illustrated both by clinical pictures and by excellent photomicro graphs and electromicroscopic pictures. Most valuable from a didactic point of view are the colored schematic drawings and the many tables. These two features are practically unique and should help any neophyte in grasp ing the principles of ocular pathology.
