Book Synopsis American Media History by : Anthony R. Fellow
Download or read book American Media History written by Anthony R. Fellow and published by . This book was released on 2021-08-16 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Media History is the story of a nation and of the events in the long battle to disseminate information, entertainment, and opinion in a democratic society. It is the story of the men and women whose inventions, ideas, and struggles shaped the nation and its media system and fought to keep both free. The text is organized chronologically and emphasizes the role the press played in the American Revolution to the present. Each chapter presents a story about media development, featuring a colorful and impressive cast of characters that includes, among others, James Franklin, Ida Tarbell, Bob Woodward, Margaret Bourke-White, Walter Cronkite, and Tarana Burke. Some of the players set standards for aspiring media professionals and others reveal tales of triumph, deceit, and the undeniable importance of freedom of speech and a free press. The fourth edition features new chapters that cover women's rights, civil rights movements, significant moments in media history (such as 9/11 and the 2020 pandemic), fake news, bias news, and the social media presences of Barack Obama and Donald J. Trump. The text includes a streamlined introductory chapter, expanded coverage of women journalists during the Civil War, new American Media Profiles and timelines, new chapter opening quotations from famous communicators, and probing History Matters boxes that relate historical events and effects to the present day. At once an enjoyable and highly compelling text, American Media History is ideal for introductory courses in journalism, mass communication, and media history.

Book excerpt: View or download the free 2017 Online Supplement for this book. While surveying the entirety of the media law landscape, Media and the Law, Second Edition, focuses in particular on real-world problems--the issues that are most likely to confront media lawyers and their clients in their everyday practices. Part I addresses fundamental definitional and constitutional issues. Beginning with an examination of how to define the media in the twenty-first century, and why definitional constructs matter, it proceeds to examine the overarching First Amendment principles that set this field of law apart from most others. Parts II and III examine issues that arise, first, from the dissemination of information and, second, from how information is collected in the first place. The chapters cover civil and criminal liability, as well as certain affirmative rights to access information. Part IV addresses more esoteric, although important, legal issues relating to the media business and the special problems that arise from the electronic dissemination of information. This second edition of Media and the Law has been updated substantially, with a particular focus on the legal challenges posed by new communication technologies, including social media and the Internet. It also contains more cases from outside the United States, which will allow students to see how other jurisdictions approach these issues. Given the global distribution of content today, a comparative perspective is essential for every lawyer who advises media clients. Each chapter begins with a short overview that attempts to put the subject addressed in context. The remaining bulk of the chapters consist principally of edited versions of the relevant cases and legal scholarship. Many of the chapters also include review problems to help students synthesize the material. Media and the Law, Second Edition is also accompanied by a Teacher's Manual. This book also is available in a three-hole punched, alternative loose-leaf version printed on 8.5 x 11 inch paper with wider margins and with the same pagination as the hardbound book.

Book Synopsis Methods of Historical Analysis in Electronic Media by : Donald G. Godfrey
Download or read book Methods of Historical Analysis in Electronic Media written by Donald G. Godfrey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-08-15 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods of Historical Analysis in Electronic Media provides a foundation for historical research in electronic media by addressing the literature and the methods--traditional and the eclectic methods of scholarship as applied to electronic media. It is about history--broadcast electronic media history and history that has been broadcast, and also about the historiography, research written, and the research yet to be written. Divided into five parts, this book: *addresses the challenges in the application of the historical methods to broadcast history; *reviews the various methods appropriate for electronic-media research based on the nature of the object under study; *suggests new approaches to popular historical topics; *takes a broad topical look at history in broadcasting; and *provides a broad overview of what has been accomplished, a historian's challenges, and future research. Intended for students and researchers in broadcast history, Methods of Historical Analysis in Electronic Media provides an understanding of the qualitative methodological tools necessary for the study of electronic media history, and illustrates how to find primary sources for electronic media research.
