Book Synopsis Millennials Talking Media by : Sylvia Sierra
Download or read book Millennials Talking Media written by Sylvia Sierra and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Inconceivable!"; "Long hair don't care"; "You shall not pass!"; "I'll be back." The way we read these lines - whether or not you picture Gandalf standing at the edge of a cliff and hear the deep monotone of the Terminator - makes it clear that media consumption affects our everyday lives, language, and how we identify as part of a group.Millennials Talking Media examines how U.S. millennial friends embed both old media (books, songs, movies, and TV shows) and new media (YouTube videos, videogames, and internet memes) in their everyday talk for particular interactional purposes. Sylvia Sierra presents multiple case studies featuringthe recorded talk of millennial friends to demonstrate how and why these speakers make media references and use them to handle awkward moments and other interactional dilemmas. Sierra's analysis shows how such references contribute to epistemic management and frame shifts in conversation, whichultimately work together to construct a shared sense of millennial identity. Additionally, this book explores the stereotypes embedded in the media that these friends cite and examines their effects in everyday social life. This book shows how the boundaries between screens, online and offline life, language, and identity are porous for millennials. Building on everyday conversation among family and friends and contemporary work in media studies, Sierra weaves together the most current linguistic theories regardingknowledge, framing, and identity to create a book that will be of interest to scholars and students of sociolinguistics, communication, rhetoric, conversation analysis, and media studies - and to boomers, millennials, and Gen Z alike.

Book Synopsis Pitch of Poetry by : Charles Bernstein
Download or read book Pitch of Poetry written by Charles Bernstein and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-03-28 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praised in recent years as a “calculating, improvisatory, essential poet” by Daisy Fried in the New York Times, Charles Bernstein is a leading voice in American literary theory. Pitch of Poetry is his irreverent guide to modernist and contemporary poetics. Subjects range across Holocaust representation, Occupy Wall Street, and the figurative nature of abstract art. Detailed overviews of formally inventive work include essays on—or “pitches” for—a set of key poets, from Gertrude Stein and Robert Creeley to John Ashbery, Barbara Guest, Larry Eigner, and Leslie Scalapino. Bernstein also reveals the formative ideas behind the magazine L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E. The final section, published here for the first time, is a sweeping work on the poetics of stigma, perversity, and disability that is rooted in the thinking of Edgar Allan Poe, Emily Dickinson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and William Blake. Pitch of Poetry makes an exhilarating case for what Bernstein calls echopoetics: a poetry of call and response, reason and imagination, disfiguration and refiguration.

Download or read book Living Screens written by Monique Rooney and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-08-28 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through original analysis of three contemporary, auteur-directed melodramas (Matthew Weiner’s Mad Men, Lars von Trier’s Melancholia and Todd Haynes’s Mildred Pierce), Living Screens reconceives and renovates the terms in which melodrama has been understood. Returning to Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s foundational, Enlightenment-era melodrama Pygmalion with its revival of an old story about sculpted objects that spring to life, it contends that this early production prefigures the structure of contemporary melodramas and serves as a model for the way we interact with media today. Melodrama is conceptualized as a “plastic” form with the capacity to mould and be moulded and that speaks to fundamental processes of mediation. Living Screens evokes the thrills, anxieties, and uncertainties accompanying our attachment to technologies that are close-at-hand yet have far-reaching effects. In doing so, it explores the plasticity of our current situation, in which we live with screens that melodramatically touch our lives.

Book Synopsis Beauty and the Beast by : Michael Taussig
Download or read book Beauty and the Beast written by Michael Taussig and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-07-30 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beauty and the Beast begins with the question: Is beauty destined to end in tragedy? Drawing on extensive fieldwork in Colombia, Michael Taussig scrutinizes the anxious, audacious, and sometimes destructive attempts people make to transform their bodies through cosmetic surgery and liposuction. He balances an examination of surgeries meant to enhance an individual’s beauty with an often overlooked counterpart, surgeries performed—often on high profile criminals—to disguise one’s identity. Situating this globally shared phenomenon within the economic, cultural, and political history of Colombia, Taussig links the country’s long civil war and its bodily mutilation and torture to the beauty industry at large, sketching Colombia as a country whose high aesthetic stakes make it a stage where some of the most important and problematic ideas about the body are played out. Central to Taussig’s examination is George Bataille’s notion of depense, or “wasting.” While depense is often used as a critique, Taussig also looks at the exuberance such squandering creates and its position as a driving economic force. Depense, he argues, is precisely what these procedures are all about, and the beast on the other side of beauty should not be dismissed as simple recompense. At once theoretical and colloquial, public and intimate, Beauty and the Beast is a true-to-place ethnography—written in Taussig’s trademark voice—that tells a thickly layered but always accessible story about the lengths to which people will go to be physically remade.
