Download or read book Ethics Beyond War's End written by Eric Patterson and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-02 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have focused new attention on a perennial problem: how to end wars well. What ethical considerations should guide war’s settlement and its aftermath? In cases of protracted conflicts, recurring war, failed or failing states, or genocide and war crimes, is there a framework for establishing an enduring peace that is pragmatic and moral? Ethics Beyond War’s End provides answers to these questions from the just war tradition. Just war thinking engages the difficult decisions of going to war and how war is fought. But from this point forward just war theory must also take into account what happens after war ends, and the critical issues that follow: establishing an enduring order, employing political forms of justice, and cultivating collective forms of conciliation. Top thinkers in the field—including Michael Walzer, Jean Bethke Elshtain, James Turner Johnson, and Brian Orend—offer powerful contributions to our understanding of the vital issues associated with late- and post conflict in tough, real-world scenarios that range from the US Civil War to contemporary quagmires in Afghanistan, the Middle East, and the Congo.
Book Synopsis US Foreign Policy and the End of the Cold War in Africa by : Flavia Gasbarri
Download or read book US Foreign Policy and the End of the Cold War in Africa written by Flavia Gasbarri and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-07 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the end of the Cold War in Africa and its impact on post-Cold War US foreign policy in the continent. The fall of the Berlin Wall is widely considered the end of the Cold War; however, it documents just one of the many "ends", since the Cold War was a global conflict. This book looks at one of the most neglected extra-European battlegrounds, the African continent, and explores how American foreign policy developed in this region between the late 1980s and the early 1990s. Drawing on a wide range of recently disclosed documents, the book shows that the Cold War in Africa ended in 1988, preceding the fall of the Berlin Wall. It also reveals how, since then, some of the most controversial and inconsistent episodes of post-Cold War US foreign policy in Africa have been deeply rooted in the unique process whereby American rivalry with the USSR found its end in the continent. The book challenges the traditional narrative by presenting an original perspective on the study of the end of the Cold War and provides new insights into the shaping of US foreign policy during the so-called ‘unipolar moment’. This book will be of much interest to students of Cold War history, US foreign policy, African politics and international relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this action-packed, twisty, and fast-paced continuation of the PI Clifford Dee thriller series, private investigator Clifford Dee is back with his team, this time in Northern Virginia, working with his former Army Rangers commander, Doyle Hamilton, in Washington D.C. After a U.S. Senator was murdered, Doyle was chosen to run in a special election to fill his office. To qualify, he must step down from his army command and decides to hand the division over to a former military rival of Clifford's, Kevin Burr, who shuts Clifford out from work out of spite. While his teammate, Bailey, takes on a minor copyright case involving a budding rap star, they uncover connections between a government department that Burr used to run and another famous rap artist, Dark Fenix, who was about to tour overseas as a cover to smuggle weapons into Africa for Burr. Things worsen when he also finds a connection between Burr and a ring of assassins for hire. Clifford discloses this information to Doyle, which makes things worse and Clifford's team is targeted. He must now work with Special Agent Sims of the FBI to continue investigating the weapons dealing, find who is running the assassins, and dig up evidence to incriminate Burr...all without getting killed. Clifford's team gets Dark Fenix's Africa tour canceled and Burr is in the hot-seat because he cannot deliver the weapons to the African warlords as promised. Stretched too thin, Burr finds himself in a deadly bind. Clifford and Sims take on the assassins, resulting in one of them ending up in the hospital and an office fire being set to cover up evidence. More assassins are sent to finish the job, which turns into an all-out brawl, but they manage to escape. The assassins' leader gets the drop on the team and plans to force Clifford to watch his team die, one by one. This time there doesn't seem to be any escape... Fans of action thrillers and crime suspense like the TV series Burn Notice are sure to enjoy this mile-a-minute story of government conspiracy, car chases, lethal encounters, and humorous situations.

Download or read book At War's End written by Roland Paris and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-05-24 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All fourteen major peacebuilding missions launched between 1989 and 1999 shared a common strategy for consolidating peace after internal conflicts: immediate democratization and marketization. Transforming war-shattered states into market democracies is basically sound, but pushing this process too quickly can have damaging and destabilizing effects. The process of liberalization is inherently tumultuous, and can undermine the prospects for stable peace. A more sensible approach to post-conflict peacebuilding would seek, first, to establish a system of domestic institutions that are capable of managing the destabilizing effects of democratization and marketization within peaceful bounds and only then phase in political and economic reforms slowly, as conditions warrant. Peacebuilders should establish the foundations of effective governmental institutions prior to launching wholesale liberalization programs. Avoiding the problems that marred many peacebuilding operations in the 1990s will require longer-lasting and, ultimately, more intrusive forms of intervention in the domestic affairs of these states. This book was first published in 2004.

Book Synopsis How to End a War by : Graham Parsons
Download or read book How to End a War written by Graham Parsons and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-09 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How and when should we end a war? What place should the pathways to a war's end have in war planning and decision-making? This volume treats the topic of ending war as part and parcel of how wars begin and how they are fought – a unique, complex problem, worthy of its own conversation. New essays by leading thinkers and practitioners in the fields of philosophical ethics, international relations, and military law reflect on the problem and show that it is imperative that we address not only the resolution of war, but how and if a war as waged can accommodate a future peace. The essays collectively solidify the topic and underline its centrality to the future of military ethics, strategy, and war.
