Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The senator from Missouri shares her “straightforward, plainspoken, and at once deeply personal and thoroughly political” (Publishers Weekly) story of embracing her ambition, surviving sexism, making a family, losing a husband, outsmarting her enemies—and finding joy along the way. Claire McCaskill grew up in a political family, but not at a time that welcomed women with big plans. She earned a law degree and paid her way through school by working as a waitress. By 1982 Claire had set her sights on the Missouri House of Representatives. That door was slammed in her face, but Claire always kept pushing—first as a prosecutor of arsonists and rapists and then all the way to the door of a cabal of Missouri politicians, who had secret meetings to block her legislation. In this candid, lively, and forthright memoir, Senator McCaskill describes her uphill battle to become who she is today, from her failed first marriage to a Kansas City car dealer—the father of her three children—to her current marriage to a Missouri businessman whom she describes as “a life partner.” She depicts her ups and downs with the Clintons, her long-shot reelection as senator after secretly helping to nominate a right-wing extremist as her opponent, and the fun of joining the growing bipartisan sisterhood in the Senate. Unconventional, unsparing in its honesty, full of sharp humor and practical wisdom, and rousing in its defense of female ambition, “Plenty Ladylike is a powerful, unapologetic primer on the successful exercise of real power and what it takes to get it, keep it, and use it. This is a brilliant memoir that nearly explodes with encouragement for women on how to achieve their dreams” (Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook COO and author of Lean In).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1862 was the year that the US Civil War underwent a major ramping up. People on both sides of the fight were confused, angry, and hesitant. Most believed the 'war' would have already been over. Very few people realized to what extent the citizenry was being manipulated to participate in the country's most dividing event in its history. In LONGSHOT in MISSOURI, we meet Rob Finn - an Irish immigrant farmer living in Wisconsin - and follow him through his introduction to the grueling realities of war within a nation. Rob's unusual talents with a rifle have earned him the nickname of Longshot, together with assignments that take him to various places around the western theatre of the war. It is a physically taxing, emotional journey, on which he is sometimes surprised by the truths he learns while doing his job as a soldier and a spy.

Book excerpt: A top Russian intelligence agent has defected to the West and the only man with whom he will speak is Kyle Swanson, who busted him out of the U.S. Marine Corps Scout/Sniper School years ago. The defector proves to be an Edward Snowden-type gold mine of amazing secrets about the When, Where and How of President Vladimir Pushkin's next grab for lost Soviet territory. But Swanson, now a special contractor with the CIA, soon begins to believe that it is all fool's gold being sprinkled by Moscow to ignite an open military fight with NATO and the United States. Using his own deadly methods, the sniper sets out to find the truth, but to slow him down, the Russians kidnap Swanson's beautiful friend Calico, the CIA station chief in Estonia. From Italy to the Arctic Circle, Kyle Swanson is on the hunt, convinced that the defector actually is running a complex plot to hand Russia a kingdom in the north. But Swanson seems always to be a step behind because there is a traitor within his own chain of command. To stop the madness, Swanson must deliver a kill shot a hundred miles away from a border bridge in Estonia, where a Russian Army waits on the far shore as a government official crosses over with an invitation to invade.
Book Synopsis Eighteen-Day Running Mate by : Joshua M. Glasser
Download or read book Eighteen-Day Running Mate written by Joshua M. Glasser and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No skeletons were rattling in "his" closet, Thomas Eagleton assured George McGovern's political director. But only eighteen days later--after a series of damaging public revelations and feverish behind-the-scenes maneuverings--McGovern rescinded his endorsement of his Democratic vice-presidential running mate, and Eagleton withdrew from the ticket. This fascinating book is the first to uncover the full story behind Eagleton's rise and precipitous fall as a national candidate.Within days of Eagleton's nomination, a pair of anonymous phone calls brought to light his history of hospitalizations for "nervous exhaustion and depression" and past treatment with electroshock therapy. The revelation rattled the campaign and placed McGovern's organization under intense public and media scrutiny. Joshua Glasser investigates a campaign in disarray and explores the perspectives of the campaign's key players, how decisions were made and who made them, how cultural attitudes toward mental illness informed the crisis, and how Eagleton's and McGovern's personal ambitions shaped the course of events.Drawing on personal interviews with McGovern, campaign manager Gary Hart, political director Frank Mankiewicz, and dozens of other participants inside and outside the McGovern and Eagleton camps--as well as extensive unpublished campaign records--Glasser captures the political and human drama of Eagleton's brief candidacy. Glasser also offers sharp insights into the America of 1972--mired in war, anxious about the economy, ambivalent about civil rights.

Book excerpt: This tale of historical intrigue opens on the Gettysburg battlefield during the third day of July, 1863 from a Confederate soldier's view in Pickett's Charge. It next takes the characters to the gold fields of the Idaho Territory before returning with some of them to Wisconsin. Third (and longest) book of the Longshot trilogy, LONGSHOT FROM DARKNESS is a ride through tough, beautiful places among men as tough as the land they pass through. It is 1863 and the gold is not making its way east to the governments of the USA and the CSA. Why not? Ambitious politicians point fingers with one hand while stealing from the till with the other. There is violence in the streets making folks unsure and upset. Can a few good men sort this out? And can anyone tell the good guys from the bad guys? Pinkerton agent Rob Finn and his sidekick Lonnie Walters return to Bannack to get the gold supply again flowing to the Union. Sheriff Henry Plummer is on hand to assist, as is Treasury agent Emry. Gold from an unexpected source enters the picture, changing Finn's plans. Yet few things are as they seem. Few people are who they pretend to be. Every man is different from his neighbor; many have secrets. The good men will always rise, or will they? Picking his way through the possibilities will take time. Time waits for no man, and Rob is no exception. When will he find out the real culprit(s), and will he be in time to keep the gold from falling into the wrong hands? What readers are saying about LONGSHOT FROM DARKNESS: "The tale is a good one, but it is the story shaped by the characters, both previously met as well as newly encountered here, that infuses the book with life and excitement. Many scenes make the reader feel like you're there." Amazon Reader "Many interesting characters..... historically accurate of the time....well written.....well done." Amazon Reader "Being an avid fan of western novels and having read many authors works, your Longshot series ranks with the best Mr. Baker.....if not the best....." Amazon Reader

Book excerpt: Much has been made of the 2016 electoral flip of traditionally Democratic states like Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Ohio to tip Donald Trump into the presidency. Countless think pieces have explored this newfound exotic constituency of blue voters who swung red. But what about those who remain true blue? Red State Blues speaks to the lived experience of progressives, activists, and ordinary Democrats pushing back against simplistic narratives of the Midwest as "Trump Country." They've been there all along, and as the essays in this collection demonstrate, they're not leaving anytime soon. With contributions by journalist and scholar Sarah Kendzior, Kenyon College president Sean Decatur, Pittsburgh city councilman Dan Gilman, and more.
Book Synopsis Last of Its Kind - First of This Kind: by : Scott Crass
Download or read book Last of Its Kind - First of This Kind: written by Scott Crass and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-07-24 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was a tale of two cycles. The 1990 Senate election landscape rewarded popular incumbents and was largely devoid of national themes. There were colorful, headline grabbing moments and a near-shocker or two yet all but one Senator seeking another term was granted it. The 1992 landscape had no such clarity. A downward economy sparked the call for new ideas and backlash from the Clarence Thomas-Anita Hill sexual harassment hearings started a furious movement that led to the “Year of the Woman.” Both themes converged to set the stage for “change.” The precursor was an unexpected race in Pennsylvania between those two cycles that, but for a plane crash would not have happened. This book profiles the most competitive races of those cycles. Readers will become acquainted with the issues, personalities and the men and women who personified the status quo, change and everything in between.

Book Synopsis Close-ups and Long Shots in Modern Chinese Cinemas by : Hsiu-Chuang Deppman
Download or read book Close-ups and Long Shots in Modern Chinese Cinemas written by Hsiu-Chuang Deppman and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2020-10-31 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two of the most stylized shots in cinema—the close-up and the long shot—embody distinct attractions. The iconicity of the close-up magnifies the affective power of faces and elevates film to the discourse of art. The depth of the long shot, in contrast, indexes the facts of life and reinforces our faith in reality. Each configures the relation between image and distance that expands the viewer’s power to see, feel, and conceive. To understand why a director prefers one type of shot over the other then is to explore more than aesthetics: It uncovers significant assumptions about film as an art of intervention or organic representation. Close-ups and Long Shots in Modern Chinese Cinemas is the first book to compare these two shots within the cultural, historical, and cinematic traditions that produced them. In particular, the global revival of Confucian studies and the transnational appeal of feminism in the 1980s marked a new turn in the composite cultural education of Chinese directors whose shot selections can be seen as not only stylistic expressions, but ethical choices responding to established norms about self-restraint, ritualism, propriety, and female agency. Each of the films discussed—Zhang Yimou’s Red Sorghum, Ang Lee’s Lust, Caution, Hou Hsiao-hsien’s The Assassin, Jia Zhangke’s I Wish I Knew, and Wei Desheng’s Cape No. 7— represents a watershed in Chinese cinemas that redefines the evolving relations among film, politics, and ethics. Together these works provide a comprehensive picture of how directors contextualize close-ups and long shots in ways that make them interpretable across many films as bellwethers of social change.
