Book excerpt: The World Health Organization commissioned this review of longitudinal studies of drinking patterns and alcohol-related problems to evaluate the contributions, needs and limitations of longitudinal research. The review also develops guidelines and recommendations for future longitudinal studies of human alcohol use in different regions of the world. In addition, it identifies the lack of cross-study comparison to epidemiological description and demonstrates ways in which individual longitudinal studies can contribute to epidemiological description across historical periods, cultures and age cohorts. It then examines three diverse explanations of longitudinal drinking patterns and problems from the perspectives of biology, sociology and psychology, addressing how concretely replicated they are and how they are confounded by methodological problems. Finally, it develops strategies for future research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a paucity of studies that have investigated the quality of life (QoL) of alcohol dependent individuals. Intuitively because there are deleterious physical and psychological health consequences resulting from alcohol consumption it is possible to put forward the hypothesis that not-relapsing to heavy drinking will result in an improved QoL and in contrast that the consequences of relapsing to heavy drinking will be a deterioration in QoL. The present book tests this hypothesis and also seeks to ascertain those variables that are predictors of outcome. In addition it examines the role played by sociodemographic and other confounding factors in the QoL of alcohol-dependent individuals.

Book excerpt: When The Natural History of Alcoholism was first published in 1983, it was acclaimed in the press as the single most important contribution to the literature on alcoholism since the first edition of Alcoholic Anonymous’s Big Book. George Vaillant took on the crucial questions of whether alcoholism is a symptom or a disease, whether it is progressive, whether alcoholics differ from others before the onset of their alcoholism, and whether alcoholics can safely drink. Based on an evaluation of more than 600 individuals followed for over forty years, Vaillant’s monumental study offered new and authoritative answers to all of these questions. In this updated version of his classic book, Vaillant returns to the same subjects with the perspective gained from fifteen years of further follow-up. Alcoholics who had been studied to age 50 in the earlier book have now reached age 65 and beyond, and Vaillant reassesses what we know about alcoholism in light of both their experiences and the many new studies of the disease by other researchers. The result is a sharper focus on the nature and course of this devastating disorder as well as a sounder foundation for the assessment of various treatments.

The topics covered include reliability, validity, sampling, aggregation, and the correspondence between theory and method. More specific, practical issues in longitudinal research, such as the drop-out problem and issues of confidentiality are also addressed. The volume is the result of an interdisciplinary endeavor by leading European scientists to discuss appropriate ways of handling various types of longitudinal data, including psychiatric data, alcohol data, and criminal data.

Book excerpt: In 1970, sociologist Jeremiah Lowney began researching a group of surfers called the "Wall Gang" in a small community of drug and alcohol users on Golden Beach in San Diego, California. Stoned, Drunk, or Sober? is the culmination of Lowney's thirty-eight years of intensive non-participant observation of seventy-two surfers. This book offers a rare look at various qualitative techniques employed to understand alcohol and drug use. Lowney utilizes basic quantitative statistical data to complement and verify the qualitative findings, thereby providing a deeper understanding than if only one or the other had been used. Because it spans so many years, Lowney's longitudinal research offers readers an opportunity to fully grasp the various factors that contribute to substance abuse, the various paths used to overcome the severe consequences of addiction, and the histories of those who did not use drugs, those who did, and those who are now "free and sober."

This book gives the reader an introduction to research methods and other knowledge bases, while discussing current alcohol research and suggests clinical applications. Each subsequent chapter focuses on a specific variable and its methodology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcohol use by young people is extremely dangerous - both to themselves and society at large. Underage alcohol use is associated with traffic fatalities, violence, unsafe sex, suicide, educational failure, and other problem behaviors that diminish the prospects of future success, as well as health risks â€" and the earlier teens start drinking, the greater the danger. Despite these serious concerns, the media continues to make drinking look attractive to youth, and it remains possible and even easy for teenagers to get access to alcohol. Why is this dangerous behavior so pervasive? What can be done to prevent it? What will work and who is responsible for making sure it happens? Reducing Underage Drinking addresses these questions and proposes a new way to combat underage alcohol use. It explores the ways in which may different individuals and groups contribute to the problem and how they can be enlisted to prevent it. Reducing Underage Drinking will serve as both a game plan and a call to arms for anyone with an investment in youth health and safety.
