The review covered the issues related to the principles of hotmix asphalt paving and compaction for longitudinal joint construction, longitudinal joint problems, and some longitudinal joint construction techniques and specifications from different studies. Specific recommendations have also been made for application in the State of Kansas.
Book Synopsis Density Evaluation of the Longitudinal Construction Joint of Hot-mix Asphalt Pavements by : Cindy K. Estakhri

This book was released on 2001 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When placing hot-mix asphalt concrete (HMAC), paving the full width of the pavement in a single pass is usually impossible; therefore, most bituminous pavements contain longitudinal construction joints. These construction joints can often be inferior to the rest of the pavement and can eventually cause an otherwise sound pavement to deteriorate more quickly. The objectives of this project were to (1) assess the density along the longitudinal construction joint of several Texas pavements to determine if a problem exists; (2) document information from the literature; (3) synthesize aviation construction data where a history of a joint density specification exists to determine if such a requirement can be met by paving contractors; and (4) modify current HMAC specifications to require joint density measurements if justification is verified.

Download or read book Construction of Longitudinal Joints in Flexible Pavements written by Steven McInnis and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Improving the durability of asphalt pavements is an on-going goal to the Ontario Ministry of Transportation and the hot-mix industry. One way to achieve this goal is to construct proper longitudinal joints. While proper construction techniques are important in contributing to the quality of a longitudinal joint, increased awareness of the issues which should be considered during the planning and design of projects plays an equally important role in producing desirable joint quality. This report presents a holistic approach to improving the quality of the longitudinal joints which are expected to increase the durability of asphalt pavements."--Document.

Book Synopsis Summary of the 2006 Use of a Notched Wedge Joint in Connecticut Pilot Projects by :
Download or read book Summary of the 2006 Use of a Notched Wedge Joint in Connecticut Pilot Projects written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) longitudinal joints have been an item of increasing scrutiny in Connecticut. The traditional butt joint has typically been the method used in Connecticut. These joints have been reportedly opening up creating a longitudinal crack at the joint thus contributing significantly to the premature failure of the wearing surface. It has been widely speculated that alternative longitudinal joint construction methods could be employed to reduce the rate at which joints fail. Here, the Notched Wedge Joint is investigated. Two resurfacing projects were constructed in Connecticut during the 2006 paving season that utilized the notched wedge joint construction method. These projects were investigated as to their nuclear density and volumetric density from cut cores along the longitudinal joints.
