Book excerpt: While cathodic protection effectively reduces or stops ongoing corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete, applicability of this technology to prestressing steel has been limited because of concerns of possible bond loss and hydrogen embrittlement. Within this context the present research was intended as a comprehensive, multifaceted undertaking to elevate the understanding of prestressed concrete cathodic protection to the same level as for reinforced concrete. The experimental part of the program involved three approaches: 1) constant extension rate tests (CERT) upon straight tendon wire, 2) monitoring of cathodically polarized prestressed beams for both bond loss and hydrogen embrittlement, and 3) concrete block pullout tests involving both tendon and wire.

Book excerpt: While cathodic protection effectively reduces or stops ongoing corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete, applicability of this technology to prestressed members has been limited because of concerns regarding possible bond loss and hydrogen embrittlement. Within this context, the present research was intended as a comprehensive, multifaceted undertaking to elevate the understanding of prestressed concrete cathodic protection to the same level as for reinforced concrete. The program involved four components: (1) constant extension rate testing (CERT) of precorroded tendon wires, (2) cathodic overprotection of precorroded, pretensioned beams with evaluation for hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility, (3) concrete block pull-out tests to determine any effect of cathodic protection on the tendon-to-concrete bond, and (4) evaluation of a commercially available remote monitoring and control hardware and software system for application to prestressed concrete cathodic protection.
Book Synopsis Cathodic Protection Field Trials on Prestressed Concrete Components, Final Report by :
Download or read book Cathodic Protection Field Trials on Prestressed Concrete Components, Final Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the final report in a study to demonstrate the feasibility of using cathodic protection (CP) on concrete bridge structures containing prestressed steel. The interim report, FHWA-RD-95-032, has more details on the installation of selected CP systems. Past laboratory and test yard studies had indicated that overprotection could result in the evolution of atomic hydrogen and the embrittlement of prestressing steel. Systems utilizing catalyzed titanium mesh, conductive rubber, and arc-sprayed zinc anodes were installed on prestressed pilings and girders of the Howard Frankland Bridge in Tampa, Florida; and systems using flame-sprayed zinc and conductive paint anodes were installed on the soffit of prestressed box beams of the Abbey Road and West 130th Street bridges near Cleveland, Ohio. For most of the components tested, CP was achieved safely and reliably without reaching conditions that could result in embrittlement of prestressed steel.
Book Synopsis Long-term Performance of Corrosion Inhibitors Used in Repair of Reinforced Concrete Bridge Components by : Moavin Islam
Download or read book Long-term Performance of Corrosion Inhibitors Used in Repair of Reinforced Concrete Bridge Components written by Moavin Islam and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of the project was to determine the effectiveness of cathodic protection, electrochemical chloride extraction, and corrosion-inhibitor treatment systems installed during the SHRP effort through the long-term evaluation of 32 field test sites and a number of laboratory concrete slab specimens. The FHWA program required monitoring the long-term performance of corrosion inhibitor treatments on selected components of four bridges that were treated and evaluated under SHRP C-103. Three evaluations over a period of 5 years were conducted on structures located in Minnesota, New York and Pennsylvania, and two evaluations were conducted on a structure in Washington State. An analysis of the results concluded that neither of the corrosion inhibitors evaluated in this study, using the specified repairs and exposed to the specific environments, provided any corrosion-inhibiting benefit. Shrinkage cracking plagued repairs at all test sites except for the Washington site.

Book Synopsis Cathodic Protection of Concrete Bridges by : Jack E. Bennett
Download or read book Cathodic Protection of Concrete Bridges written by Jack E. Bennett and published by Strategic Highway Research Program (Shrp). This book was released on 1993 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document provides explanation, guidance, and direction concerning cathodic protection of concrete bridge elements to the highway engineer who wants to incorporate cathodic protection in a bridge project. The manual which provides background information on corrosion fundamentals, is divided into 3 parts: design, construction, and operation and maintenance. An appendix provides standard specifications for cathodic protection systems for both decks and substructures. The document is intended to be a useful reference for engineers who design and prepare specifications or who oversee turnkey operations.
Book Synopsis Application of Cathodic Prevention in a New Concrete Bridge Deck in Virginia by : Gerardo G. Clemeña
Download or read book Application of Cathodic Prevention in a New Concrete Bridge Deck in Virginia written by Gerardo G. Clemeña and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrosion of reinforcement in concrete bridges has been a major factor in limiting the service life of many such structures. As part of a concerted effort to identify cost-effective options for eliminating corrosion of reinforcement, the application of cathodic prevention was tried in a recently constructed concrete bridge deck. The incorporation of an impressed-current cathodic prevention system in a new concrete bridge deck while it was being constructed was made possible by the use of titanium mesh ribbon anodes coated with mixed-metal oxide. The anodes were spaced 32 cm (13 in.) apart and transversely across the entire bridge deck to allow for the trouble-free placement of the concrete. The system has been operating for almost 2 years with no extraordinary problems. A comparison of the long-term cost of this option with those of other options, such as the use of corrosion-resistant clad bars or stainless steel bars, indicated that this option is not economically favorable.

Book Synopsis Cathodic Protection Developments for Prestressed Concrete Components by : M. Funuhashi
Download or read book Cathodic Protection Developments for Prestressed Concrete Components written by M. Funuhashi and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the final report in a study that evaluated the feasibility of using cathodic protection on prestressed concrete bridge members. Four pretensioned beams were constructed. In addition, two post-tensioned slabs were constructed to evaluate the ability of cathodic current to provide corrosion protection to anchorages and tendons encased in metal or plastic conduits. Cathodic protection currents were supplied by IR drop-free potential controlled rectifiers. Later in the study, constant-current power supplies were utilized.
Book Synopsis Cathodic Protection Developments for Prestressed Concrete Components by :
Download or read book Cathodic Protection Developments for Prestressed Concrete Components written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of cathodic protection on the embrittlement of high strength steel embedded in concrete were studied. The results show that cathodic protection will generate hydrogen on the steel if the potential is more negative than the thermodynamic hydrogen evolution potential. The atomic hydrogen generated will enter the steel and cause a loss in ductility which will adversely affect the steel's performance if a notch is present. Studies are continuing on full-scale beams to study this effect and effective cathodic protection criteria. Conductive paint anode systems were tested to shed light on the causes of anode deterioration. Anode disbondment is largely the result of acids generated between the anode and concrete interface. Studies are continuing on several methods to improve the long-term bond strength between the anode and concrete.
