Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first textbook on the design of FRP for structural engineering applications Composites for Construction is a one-of-a-kind guide to understanding fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) and designing and retrofitting structures with FRP. Written and organized like traditional textbooks on steel, concrete, and wood design, it demystifies FRP composites and demonstrates how both new and retrofit construction projects can especially benefit from these materials, such as offshore and waterfront structures, bridges, parking garages, cooling towers, and industrial buildings. The code-based design guidelines featured in this book allow for demonstrated applications to immediately be implemented in the real world. Covered codes and design guidelines include ACI 440, ASCE Structural Plastics Design Manual, EUROCOMP Design Code, AASHTO Specifications, and manufacturer-published design guides. Procedures are provided to the structural designer on how to use this combination of code-like documents to design with FRP profiles. In four convenient sections, Composites for Construction covers: * An introduction to FRP applications, products and properties, and to the methods of obtaining the characteristic properties of FRP materials for use in structural design * The design of concrete structural members reinforced with FRP reinforcing bars * Design of FRP strengthening systems such as strips, sheets, and fabrics for upgrading the strength and ductility of reinforced concrete structural members * The design of trusses and frames made entirely of FRP structural profiles produced by the pultrusion process

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Strip Method Design Handbook is a thorough guide to the use of the strip method, developed by Arne Hillerborg, for design of reinforced concrete slabs. The strip method of design is relevant to many types of slabs including rectangular slabs with all sides supported and regular flat slabs with cantilevering parts. The author discusses unevenly distributed loads, concentrated loads and the influence of openings as well as joist floors and prestressed slabs. This book provides a practical guide for the designer demonstrating how to use the strip method in a wide range of design situations specific to a slab type. The method is illustrated throughout with numerical examples and the analysis is rationalised with approximations and formulas for the calculation of design moments.

Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the performance of GFRP pretensioned concrete slabs and compares their flexural behaviour with GFRP reinforced and steel prestressed concrete slabs. A total of 12 slabs were cast in this program. The slab mid-span deflections are theoretically predicted and the results indicate that the short-term response of GFRP prestressed concrete slabs can be predicted well by the existing methods. Long-term deflection behaviour has been estimated using the Age Adjusted Effective Modulus Method by incorporating three creep and shrinkage models. A large influence of creep and shrinkage models on the theoretical determination is observed and the use of long term multipliers is not suitable for GFRP prestressed concrete members. The slabs were instrumented for long-term monitoring using strain gauges and fibre-optic sensors. It was concluded that the electrical strain gauges can be successfully used for long-term strain monitoring.

Book excerpt: Accidental reduction in the amount of steel in continuous reinforced concrete (RC) floor slab is a typical problem that might occur due to an error in design, unclear drawings, or overlooked verification of reinforcement prior to concrete casting. Existence of such deficiencies would compromise the load capacity and serviceability of RC floor slab. This research examines the effectiveness of using fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) to improve the structural response of flexure-deficient continuous RC slab strips. The study comprised experimental testing and finite elements (FE) modeling. Sixteen two-span RC slap strips, 400 x 125 x 3800 mm each, were tested. Test parameters included the deficiency location, strengthening regime, and amount of FRP. The unstrengthened slab strip deficient in the sagging region had 22% lower load capacity and 64% higher deflection-based ductility index compared with those of its counterpart deficient in the hogging region. Strengthening with FRP improved the load capacity and stiffness of the deficient slab strips. The FRP strengthening tended to decrease the ductility index of the slab strips deficient in the sagging regions. Conversely, the ductility index of the slab strips deficient in the hogging region tended to increase after strengthening. The strength gain caused by strengthening was in the range 29% to 69% for the slab strips deficient in the sagging regions and 14% to 44% for those deficient in the hogging region. Increasing the amount of FRP resulted in an increase in the load capacity but the additional strength gain was, generally, not proportional to the added amount of FRP. Increasing the amount of FRP had, typically, less significant effect on the load capacity of the slabs deficient in the hogging region than in the sagging region. Strengthening of deficient regions reduced the moment redistribution ratios. The ratios further decreased as the amount of FRP in the deficient region increased. A maximum moment redistribution ratio of +32% was recorded for the strengthened slab strips. The FE model developed in this study predicted the nonlinear structural response of the tested continuous RC slab strips with a high level of accuracy. The numerical and experimental results were in good agreement.

Book excerpt: The in situ rehabilitation or upgrading of reinforced concrete members using bonded steel plates is an effective, convenient and economic method of improving structural performance. However, disadvantages inherent in the use of steel have stimulated research into the possibility of using fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) materials in its place, providing a non-corrosive, more versatile strengthening system. This book presents a detailed study of the flexural strengthening of reinforced and prestressed concrete members using fibre reinforces polymer composite plates. It is based to a large extent on material developed or provided by the consortium which studied the technology of plate bonding to upgrade structural units using carbon fibre / polymer composite materials. The research and trial tests were undertaken as part of the ROBUST project, one of several ventures in the UK Government's DTI-LINK Structural Composites Programme. The book has been designed for practising structural and civil engineers seeking to understand the principles and design technology of plate bonding, and for final year undergraduate and postgraduate engineers studying the principles of highway and bridge engineering and structural engineering. - Detailed study of the flexural strengthening of reinforced and prestressed concrete members using fibre reinforced polymer composites - Contains in-depth case histories

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents an investigation of the flexural behavior of two-way solid slabs reinforced with GFRP bars. That study is done through experimental and Numerical works. The experimental work includes eight slab specimens, reinforced with GFRP bars in addition to a reference slab, reinforced with steel bars. All slabs have dimensions of 175X175 mm where the clear spans of all slab specimens are 135x135m. Marginal beams are built at the edges of the slabs with dimension of 200x200 mm. The beams are reinforced with steel bars. The specimens are divided into two groups (A, and B) with slab thicknesses of 60 and 70 mm. The slabs are loaded by a loading system which apply uniform loads on the slabs. The loads are applied till the failure of the slabs. The changing parameters are the slab thicknesses of 60 mm for group A and 70 mm for group B, and the reinforcement ratio of 0.53%, 1.33%, 1.58%, 2.31% for group A, and 0.58%, 0.77%, 0.79%, and 1.01% for group B while the control slab has thickness of 70 mm and reinforcement ratio of 0.79%. The measurement parameters are the loads, the corresponding displacements, the strains in the reinforcement bars, in addition to the cracks propagations. The study investigate the load-deflection relations, the load-strain relations in addition to the cracks propagation. Also, the ductility characteristics are evaluated though the displacement ductility factors of each specimen. The experimental results showed that using GFRP bars as reinforcement for the two-way concrete slabs instead of the traditional steel bars is feasible and reliable since they achieved almost similar results. By increasing the slab thickness from 60 m to 700, the slab ultimate capacity is increased by 10% for slabs with the same reinforcement ratio (0.53%). It is found that to achieve the ultimate load and the serviceability deflation of the GFRP slabs you may need to increase the reinforcement ratios by 77% and 22% of the steel bar slabs. The tested slabs achieved a displacement ductility factor of (2.11 to 3.8) while the control slabs has a factor of 2.11.Numerical investigations are done on the tested specimens using the ANSYS software. The results are almost similar to the experimental findings. In addition a parametric study is done on another 18 specimens investigated numerically only. The changing parameters are the width of the marginal beams, (200, 150, 100) mm. It is found that changing the marginal beam width has an effect on the slab ultimate loads. Since the ultimate loads decreased by ~13% by changing the marginal beam width from 200 mm to 150 mm. Also, that load is decreased by ~30% by changing the marginal beam width from 200 mm to 100 mm.
