Book excerpt: This is a collection of articles published originally in The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record containing primary source materials on Long Island. The records included range from censuses and lists of early inhabitants to newspaper notices, wills, deeds, town records, and Bible and family records. Among the census records in this volume are the Southold census of 1686, the Hempstead census of 1698, and the 1800 federal census of Kings, Queens, and Suffolk counties. In addition, there are town records or vital statistics for Newtown, Huntington, Gravesend, Hempstead, and, especially, Southold. Book excerpt: Since its inception in 1870, "The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record" has been at the forefront in publishing articles on Long Island families, many of them lengthy, definitive studies spread out over several issues. In a number of these articles the English or Dutch origin of families is established. No better purpose could be served than to gather these articles together and reprint them in their entirety, thus making available a mass of information on Long Island families that has previously been difficult to locate. With the articles appropriately consolidated and arranged, and additions and corrections from "The Record" properly appended, this two-volume compilation becomes the single greatest repository of Long Island genealogies in existence. In addition, it is fully indexed and is published with an introduction by Henry B. Hoff, former editor of "The Record."

Book Synopsis Long Island Italian Americans by : Salvatore J. LaGumina
Download or read book Long Island Italian Americans written by Salvatore J. LaGumina and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013-08-06 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Italian immigrants and their descendants, moving from "the city" to Long Island was more than a change of address. Even though the move wasn't far geographically, the societal move was large--it signaled that the family had achieved the American Dream, and in turn, elements of Italian values and culture are visible all over the island. Italians helped to build Long Island, whether as laborers or as contractors, such as the Castagnas. They brought their culinary traditions and opened markets, such as the still family-owned Iavarone Brothers Foods and restaurants, including New Hyde Park's Umberto's. Italians' industrialism helped them thrive in fields as diverse as medicine, politics, theater, and winemaking (including the nationally recognized Banfi label). Join author Salvatore J. LaGumina to discover the remarkable contributions and vibrant culture of Italians and Italian-Americans on Long Island.

Book Synopsis A History of Long Island, Vol. 3 by : Peter Ross
Download or read book A History of Long Island, Vol. 3 written by Peter Ross and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2017 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With these books an effort has been made to present the history of the whole of Long Island in such a way as to combine all the salient facts of the long and interesting story in a manner that might be acceptable to the general reader and at the same time include much of that purely antiquarian lore which is to many the most delightful feature of local history. Long Island has played a most important part in the history of the State of New York and, through New York, in the annals of the Nation. It was one of the first places in the Colonies to give formal utterance to the doctrine that taxation without representation is unjust and should not be borne by men claiming to be free-the doctrine that gradually went deep into the hearts and consciences of men and led to discussion, opposition and war; to the declaration of independence, the achievement of liberty and the founding of a new nation. It took an active part in all that glorious movement, the most significant movement in modern history, and though handicapped by the merciless occupation of the British troops after the disaster of August, 1776, it continued to do what it could to help along the cause to which so many of its citizens had devoted their fortunes, their lives. This is volume three out of three, covering the history of Nassau County, Hempstead, Oyster Bay, Suffolk County, Huntington and many towns more.
