Book excerpt: Deficits in social skills are considered to be one of the critical diagnostic impairments that define Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). These deficits impact their home, school, and community relationships. During the adolescent years, peer relationships are an important aspect of a person’s life; however, without having the social skills to engage with peers, children with ASD can begin to feel social isolation, thus impacting their mental state and potentially developing long-term mental issues. Often times, adolescent’s with ASD experience depression, loneliness, withdrawal, and social and/or attentional problems. Adolescents with ASD are aware of the relationships their typical peers engage in and want to have similar experiences. The adolescent years are a pivotal time for children with ASD to continue in learning and practicing social skills they may have acquired from interventions in their younger years. Continuing to promote their social development will provide them with the social skills needed to continue to meet higher level social demands as they matriculate into middle school. The research will evaluate the effectiveness of social skills training/interventions. The PEERS (Program for the Education and Enrichment of Related Skills) Curriculum for School-Based Professionals will be evaluated to examine its effectiveness in adolescent social skills training, as it is one of five evidence-based social skills training for adolescents. Although research on social skills interventions is limited, it continues to be a growing field. With its worldwide implementation across clinics and school settings, the PEERS research has shown it is an effective social skills intervention. Its use of previous successful components in conjunction with components make this intervention effective for adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

We, ofcourse, have the highest esteem for Governor Hunt who has been following this program with so much attention and support, and we still remember his visit to Israel with distinguished representatives of the TEACCH Program. I wish the new book every success.
