Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author and railway photographer presents a stunning collection of original images showing steam locomotives in action in the mid-20th century. This is the second book from David Knapman’s personal record of railway views that were captured on black and white film in the late 1950’s and 1960’s, until the demise of steam on British Railways. Using the same format as its companion volume, Steam on the Southern and Western, this book presents chapters covering different locations in the Eastern and London Midland regions. Knapman captures branch and mainline trains as well as locations of interest and historical infrastructure. Where preservation starts to overlap with the still active steam scene, some historic photographs are also included. Each chapter begins with an overview of the station it depicts, providing local and historical context. Each photograph is paired with a detailed caption describing the specific trains at work.

Book excerpt: The London Midland & Scottish Railway, the LMS, Great Britain's largest from 1923-1947, has been extensively chronicled, but an update is long overdue. This unique work achieves it - and much more, combining detailed information scattered over books and magazines through decades, into a concise overview of what the company was about, and how it worked. Its analyses of locomotive-stock provide a further insight into methods of operation. The LMS pioneering work in both steam and diesel traction, plus that in other fields, put it ahead of Britain's other three railways, and for this it is here accorded the recognition it deserves. Fascinating, amusing, anecdotes give an insight into the staff's work-ethic and into contemporary social conditions. Key decisions by the LMS Executive to overcome the rivalry of its two largest constituents resulted in the appointment of an engineer who would create, not only modern, efficient locomotives and rolling-stock, but also an effective and unified design-team which would actually outlive the company and provide the spine of the four nationalized railways from 1948. The technical details, such as wheel notation (4-4-0 etc), boiler-pressures and valve-gears, are well within the ambit of railfans and complete the picture of this, Britain's greatest railway.

Download or read book LMS & LNER Steam Locomotives written by Malcolm Clegg and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2021-08-30 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: L M S & L N E R Steam Locomotives, is the result of over two decades of photographing steam locomotives in action in many parts of Britain covered by the former LMS and LNER Railway Companies. They were the two largest of the ‘Big Four’ Railway Companies which operated in Britain between 1923 and 1948. The majority of the photographs were taken during the British Railways era between 1948 and 1968. Although the author Malcolm Clegg has a sizeable collection of steam locomotive photographs taken during this period, the photographs which appear in this book are from the private collection of his lifelong friend and family relative, Mr Peter Cookson (a retired school-master), himself a railway historian, author and amateur photographer, who has kindly provided the photographs for publication in this book. Many of the photographs selected are rare and unusual for a variety of reasons which should appeal to railway historians and steam enthusiasts alike.

Download or read book Steam, Soot and Rust written by Colin Garratt and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disappearance of the steam locomotive in the land of its birth touched the hearts of millions, but when the government announced the Modernisation Plan for Britain's railways in 1955, under which steam was to be phased out in favour of diesel and electric traction, few people took it seriously. Steam locomotives were an integral part of our daily lives and had been for almost one and a half centuries. Furthermore, they were still being built in large numbers. It was popularly believed that they would see the century out and probably well beyond that. But the reality was that by 1968 a mere thirteen years after the Modernisation Plan steam traction had disappeared from Britain's main line railways. It was harrowing to witness the breaking up of engines, which were the icons of their day, capable of working long-distance inter-city expresses weighing 400 tons on schedules faster than a mile a minute. Top speeds of 100mph were not unknown. This book chronicles the last few years as scrap yards all over Britain went into overtime, cutting up thousands of locomotives and releasing a bounty of more than a million tons of scrap whilst the engines, which remained in service, were a shadow of their former selves; filthy, wheezing and clanking their way to an ignominious end. The pictures in this book are augmented by essays written by Colin Garratt at the time. Although steam disappeared from the main line network it survives in everdwindling numbers on industrial systems such as collieries, ironstone mines, power stations, shipyards, sugar factories, paper mills and docks. In such environments steam traction eked out a further decade and during this time many of the industrial locations closed rendering the locomotives redundant. The British steam locomotive was born amid the coalfields and was destined to die there one and three quarter centuries later.
