Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Work of the London School Board HE object of this volume is to illustrate the Educational work of the School Board for London; to elucidate the problems which were submitted to the Board when it was created in 1870 and the methods by which it has endeavoured to solve them. In order to form an adequate conception of the magnitude of the question which is about to be discussed, it must be remembered that London, for density of population, and for wealth, if not in area, may be compared to a State rather than to a city. Its total population is more than double that of Denmark or of Greece, is larger than that of Scotland, and is only slightly exceeded by that of Bavaria and of Holland. The child population of London standing in need of elementary education is larger than the total population of any European city, except Paris, Berlin, St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Vienna, and is more than double that of Bristol, Dresden, or Prague. The total sum raised within the administrative area of London for municipal purposes (including education) is equal to the total revenue of Saxony, or Portugal, or Chili; while the sum expended in London upon elementary education alone 13 equal to the total national expenditure of Denmark, Norway, or Switzerland. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Fortnight in London Schools The following detailed report of the British School System is intended to give to the reader a correct impression of the status of elementary educational facilities in England to-day. The author had but one object in view in the effort expended in gathering the material for this little volume: That our people might become thoroughly conversant with educational conditions in England. No effort has been made to emphasize defects, nor to eulogize strong points in the school system. A fair and impartial report was in the mind of the visitor at all times. Copies of text books, pamphlets, rules and regulations, syllabi, etc., may be inspected at the office of the Superintendent of Schools. That the Board of Education may see some results among us, from a critical study of this report, is the hope of all interested in educational progress. Book excerpt: Excerpt from London at School: The Story of the School Board, 1870-1904 The intelligent appreciation of educational questions has been greatly hindered in England by the pre valence of two fallacies: the one that the religious question, as it is called, is the only matter relating to elementary schools with which the general public need concern itself. The other - a corollary from this - that all other questions relating to the educa tion of children are highly technical matters in which only specialists can take any degree of interest. In trying to tell the story of the London School Board, I have sought to show that the question of the religious instruction of the children is but one of many great questions in which every good citizen, every lover of children, certainly every parent, should be deeply interested and further, that the problems connected with the upbringing of the children of a great population are full of deep human interest. They are not teachers' problems only, but everybody's problems; for since 1870 the ultimate responsibility for the education of a very large proportion of the children of London has rested upon the community at large, and in view of the great addition now made to that responsibility, it is desirable that all should realise what it involves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the International Conference on Education, Vol. 4: London, 1884 The pupil teacher system has still, therefore, an impor tant function to discharge in our national system. To the smaller schools it is indispensable, and to the larger it may yet be helpful in preserving the continuity and integrity of the school life, and in maintaining through all its parts the free circulation of the spirit and ideas of its chief officer. Pupil teachers may, therefore, be legitimately employed, not only without detriment, but with decided advantage to the schools, and we are thus free to consider the advantages of the system as a preliminary course of training for teachers themselves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the International Conference on Education, London, 1884, Vol. 3 Now all progress depends upon full use of the power of grouping and uniting, for some new purpose of gain, conditions that have arisen independently, and that are daily arising, with little or no reference to the purposes they can be made to serve. For the advancement of our higher education in London, it seems to me that we have now reached a point when we have only to make the right combination of existing conditions, and raise London at once into the first rank among University towns. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New University for London: A Guide to Its History and a Criticism of Its Defects The announcement as to the incorporation of Gresham College with the proposed University, may be very fruitful of consequences, but that incorporation does not in the least turn a defective Charter into an unexceptional one. It does, however, mean that the Charter must be with drawn for amendment, and the withdrawal will give an opportunity for more fundamental modifications still. This little book is sent out, therefore, not as the best or most suitable for its purpose, but as all the author could compile in the short interval at his disposal. He ventures to think that the reader, with some patience, may Obtain from it a fairly clear idea of the history of the present Charter, and an acquaintance with the much that is to be said against, and the little that has been said for, the reintroduction Of tests into the constitution of a modern university. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bergson Education London in 191 1, his lectures at University College were fully reported in The Times. For the first time in the history of English journalism, the interest shown in philo sophical discourses was such as to justify verbatim re ports. Both in London and Edinburgh (which he visited later) he left behind him groups of people of all types systematically studying his philosophy. His tour in America and Canada in 191 3 was something Of the nature of a triumphal procession, leaving in its wake disciples in all classes of society. In pre-war days, when man had time for disinterested speculation, he was the most hero worshipped man in France. His lectures at the College de France were crowded with people of all nationalities, who came from far and near to gain a first-hand acquaint ance with his philosophy. In 1914 the hall in which he was announced to lecture at five O'clock was usually crowded at two o'clock. His students were prepared to wait for hours in a close atmosphere, to endure considerable physical discomfort, and to attend another lecture in which they had no interest, in order that they might be sure of hearing him. Some who failed to gain entrance did not hesitate to stand in the pouring rain outside the windows of the hall, in the hope that they might catch some words that fell from his lips. Hewas in very truth the man of the hour. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Educational Writings of John Locke Throughout the seventeenth century the schools con tinned to lose their hold upon the socially distinguished class, and the process was accelerated as the studies and manners of school-boys departed more widely from its social ideals. The schools imparted learning, and learning was something Of a trade, unsuitable to men Of position or Of affluence. Referring to her son, Colin, a Westminster boy, Lady Caithness writes, in 1692 Som says the 80001 he is at is mo proper for to breed up youths for Church men than any other station; I supos my sons inclination will not be for that post. 2 Owners of great estates frequently educated their sons at home under a private tutor and the fashion spread amongst country gentlemen. Fielding's Squire Western in Tom Jones (1749) embodies the failure Of the system; contemporary evidence shows the failure was not nu common. But its success produced the accomplished virtuoso and man Of the world, whose powers had been stimulated and strengthened by a residence of two or three years in one of the Inns Of Court, where he found access to good society, the sojourn in London being followed by a prolonged tour in France and Italy.
