Book Synopsis Parliament of India, the Ninth Lok Sabha, 1989-1991 by :
Download or read book Parliament of India, the Ninth Lok Sabha, 1989-1991 written by and published by Northern Book Centre. This book was released on 1992 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of democracy is not new to India. In fact, the substance of self-government lies embedded in its hoary past. Nearly forty-one years ago the country adopted a Constitution based on the principles of liberty, equality, fraternity and the rule of law. India opted for parliamentary form of government because it suited the genius of the people. It elected nine Parliaments on the basis of universal adult franchise and was thus able to live up to the expectations of a political awakened electorate. The image of Parliament and its credibility as a representative institution largely depends on the role and functions of its Members. The objective of the present study is, therefore, to provide an analysis of the work done by the Ninth Lok Sabha (18 December, 1989 to 13 March, 1991) in major fields during its short but eventful life span (one year two months and twenty-six days). This sought to be done by means of articles by distinguished parliamentarians and others, and statements and statistical tables supplemented by brief introductory notes. An effort has also been made to present a comparative picture of the background of Members of the earlier Lok Sabha and the work done by them. One of the noteworthy features of the Ninth Lok Sabha, which held 7 sessions consisting of 109 sittings lasting over 754 hours, was the passing of as many as 63 Bills including 7 Constitution Ammendment Bills. Two of the important Bills passed were the -Prasar Bharati- (Broadcasting Corporation of India) Bill and the -National Commission for Women’ Bill. These may well be considered as landmarks in the history of enactments made by the Parliament. The Government can take credit for answering a staggering number of 21,550 questions on diverse subjects put to it by the members of the Ninth Lok Sabha. It is hoped that the study will be helpful to researchers, parliamentarians and all those who are engaged in a study of the working of parliamentary institutions and processes and enable them to form a picture of the tasks achieved and acquaint them with the diverse activities which a modern Parliament is called upon to perform.

Book Synopsis Parliament of India, the Eighth Lok Sabha, 1985-89 by :
Download or read book Parliament of India, the Eighth Lok Sabha, 1985-89 written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Study analyses-with the help of articles by distinguished Members of Parliament and others, data, etc.-socio-economic background of the members of Eighth Lok Sabha and their participation in the work of Parliament and varied activities of the House and its committees. Major procedural developments during the Eighth Lok Sabha were the amendments to the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha as a result of the first ever comprehensive review-since 1959 when these were adopted-to bring them in conformity with the actual practice that had evolved over the years through rulings from the Chair, precedents, conventions, etc. Yet another significant development was the strengthening of the parliamentary committee system by the setting of three new standing subject Committees-one each on Agriculture, Science & Technology and Environment & Forests. Full account of all these developments and other activities of the Eighth Lok Sabha is one of the several noteworthy features of this study. The reference value of the publication is further enhanced by the detailed statements and statistical tables, supplemented by introductory notes, which presents a comparative picture of the work done by previous eight Lok Sabhas and Central Legislative Assembly since 1929.
Book Synopsis The Indian Parliament by : B.L. Shankar
Download or read book The Indian Parliament written by B.L. Shankar and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Parliament is the visible face of democracy in India. It is the epicentre of political life, public institutions of great verve, and a regime of Rights. In a first-of-its-kind study, this book delves into the lived experience of the Indian Parliament by focusing on three distinct phases—the 1950s, the 1970s, and the 1990s and beyond. The authors argue against the widely held notion of its ongoing decline, and demonstrate how it has repeatedly, and successfully, responded to India's changing needs in six decades of existence. This comprehensive and authoritative study examines the changing social composition and differing modes of representation that make up the Lok Sabha and critically explores its relation with the Rajya Sabha. Developments in the institutional complex of the Parliament, including the functioning of the Opposition and the Speaker are traced over time, along with the processes of legislation and accountability. Major debates in the House are scrutinized, and much of the analysis is based on empirical data gathered from surveys circulated among prominent politicians and public intellectuals. It also addresses the intricate issue of relations between the Judiciary and the Parliament. In its in-depth focus on the Lok Sabha, the volume highlights the way the Parliament has come to encompass India's proverbial diversity. It especially demonstrates the route this institution has taken to engage with fractious issues of diverging linguistic and regional demands.

Download or read book Votes, Parties, and Seats written by Vani Kant Borooah and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-18 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This starkly lucid and timely book absorbs the nuances of the largest festival – the elections – of the world's largest democracy. Hailing from a political family, the author conveys his passion and knowledge on the intricacies, as well as the heat and dust of his national fête. All data and events have been methodically examined in this absorbing analytical work which is an indispensable and scholarly book on the Indian elections.'– Thankom Arun, Professor at the University of Essex, UK This book provides a quantitative analysis of eight elections and an insight into voting patterns, detailing the election result for each candidate, for all the constituencies, in every Lok Sabha (the lower house of India's Bicameral-Parliament) general election from 1962 to 2014. The central purpose of this interrogation of data is to give shape to the notion of 'electoral efficiency', or the capacity of a party to convert votes into parliamentary seats. Parliamentary elections in India – and also elections to its state assemblies – are conducted under the First Past the Post (FPTP) system whereby a single representative for each of the 543 constituencies is elected as a Member of the Lok Sabha, on the basis of obtaining the largest number of all the candidates contesting that constituency. In brief, Votes, Parties, and Seats provides an in-depth study of the results of parliamentary general elections in India, and sheds light on why some parties are more efficient than others.
Book Synopsis Performing Representation by : Shirin M. Rai
Download or read book Performing Representation written by Shirin M. Rai and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seven decades after India’s independence women members occupy 1 in 10 seats in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament. In analysing women’s limited presence in the Indian Parliament, Performing Representation breaks new ground in scholarship on gender and politics. It explores the possibilities and limits of parliamentary democracy and the participation of women in its institutional performances. This book offers new insights into the gendered nature of the performance, aesthetics, and norms of parliamentary life through an examination of electoral data, legislative debates, and life stories of women MPs. The authors avoid both the framing of women MPs either simply as challengers of masculinized institutional politics or only as docile actors in a gendered institution. Making a strong case for taking parliamentary politics seriously in these times of populism, the book raises critical questions about the politics of difference, claim-making, representation, and intersectionality and addresses these as part of global feminist debates on the importance of the women’s representation in political institutions.
