They were successful in maintaining domestic peace and resisted external aggressions with strong hands, for which, they were universally recognised as tough leaders and were personified with their respective countries as well. This book intends to look at their electoral politics, modes of functioning and the power-sharing patterns, makes a comparative study of the nature of their leadership, along with the personal and institutional factors in their access to power, mitigating domestic discontents as well as their individual roles in the Indo Pak War of 1971, the Falklands Island dispute of 1982 and the Yom Kippur War of 1973.

Muslims had to contend with discrimination, disadvantage, deindustrialization, dispossession and disenfranchisement, as well as an unresponsive leadership. Anil demonstrates how the Muslim elite encouraged depoliticization, taking up seemingly noble but largely inconsequential causes with little bearing on the lives of ordinary members of the community. There was no room for mass protests or collective solidarity in this version of Muslim politics. Another India explores this elite betrayal, whose consequences are still felt by India's 200 million Muslims today.

It argues that an understanding of the history of Christianity in the region can be found in its cultural milieu and the changing political, social and religious environment. In Nagaland, almost 90 per cent of the population are Christians. This book shows that segmentation as a cultural characteristic of Naga society inspired both unity and divisiveness in the Naga churches, which subsequently shaped the beliefs and practices of the churches in the region. Using the methodology of cultural history, the author examines ecclesiastical events and suggests that the history of Christianity should be examined in the light of its interaction with its cultural context rather than as an isolated phenomenon.
