Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acronym agglomeration is an affliction of the age, and there are acronym addicts who, in their weakness, find it impossible to resist them. More than once in recent months my peers have cautioned me about my apparent readiness to use not only acronyms, but abbreviations, foreign isms, codes, and other cryptic symbols rather than common, ordinary American words. Many among us, though, either have not received or have chosen to ignore such advice. As a consequence, what we write and speak is full of mystery and confusion. It is then for the reader and listener and for the writer and speaker that Reta C. Moser has compiled this guide. Its effective application to the art of communication is urged. Such use should help avoid many of the misunderstandings involving terminology which occur daily. Although such misunderstandings are certainly crucial in humanistic and social situations, they are often of immediate import and the trigger to disaster in scientific, technical, and political situations. Some 15,000 acronyms and 25,000 definitions are provided (a 50- and 47 -percent increase over the 1964 edition!), with due credit to Miss Moser's diligence in making the compilation and with the acknowledgment that the acronymical phenomenon is very much with us. This edition, like the first, is certain to be of value to writers, librarians, editors, and others who must identify and deal with acronyms.

Book excerpt: This volume is the summary report of the Land Settlement Review (LSR), a regional study of land settlement in West Africa. The objective of the LSR was to examine the phenomenon of land settlement resulting from the successful control of onchocerciasis (riverblindness) by the Onchocerciasis Control Programme (OCP). The LSR analyzes the process of land settlement, both spontaneous and government sponsored, and recommends operational policy guidelines for promoting viable and sustainable settlement-related activities in the areas where onchocerciasis had been controlled. OCP is widely acknowledged as the most successful on-going disease control program in Africa. Started in 1974 by a group of 7 West African countries and 9 donors, including the World Bank, the program has expanded to 11 countries, includes twenty-two donors and protects 30 million people. In most of the original program area the disease has been virtually eliminated and lasting control of the disease throughout the extended program area is expected to be secured around the year 2000. The health impact of the program has been significant. Nine million children born since the beginning of the program are free of any risk of contracting the disease. Over 1.5 million people who were once seriously infected are now disease free and the program will have prevented an estimated 300,000 cases of the disease by the end of this decade.

Book excerpt: Under the blazing Iraqi sun in the summer of 2007, Shannon Meehan, a lieutenant in the U.S. Army, ordered a strike that would take the lives of innocent Iraqi civilians. He thought he was doing the right thing. He thought he was protecting his men. He thought that he would only kill the enemy, but in the ruins of the strike, he discovers his mistake and uncovers a tragedy. For most of his deployment in Iraq, Lt. Meehan felt that he had been made for a life in the military. A tank commander, he worked in the violent Diyala Province, successfully fighting the insurgency by various Sunni and Shia factions. He was celebrated by his senior officers and decorated with medals. But when the U.S. surge to retake Iraq in 2006 and 2007 finally pushed into Baqubah, a town virtually entirely controlled by al Qaida, Meehan would make the decision that would change his life. This is the true story of one soldier's attempt to reconcile what he has done with what he felt he had to do. Stark and devastating, it recounts first-hand the reality of a new type of warfare that remains largely unspoken and forgotten on the frontlines of Iraq.

Her stories will quickly move you to tears, while at other times, they will make you cry out in laughter. It is believed that harps are used in heaven by the angels, but here on earth, Kipper shows us how the Lord uses sinners to share a special peace that can only be delivered through the strings of this angelic instrument. The stories in this book are testimonies of such peace.

Book excerpt: In giving instruction in this book on how to teach students to think, "this book is an exception. Its authors have dealt directly and effectively with the paramount responsibility of the teacher in a free society: the development of citizens who are committed to and skilled in the the process of thinking---independently and reflectively ... It [the book] is designed to help them move progressively, first, to a recognition that the method of thinking, of reflective activity, is the method of learning; second, to an enhanced understanding and control of the techniques which make possible the creation of situations that challenge individuals to think; and third, to the attitude which values the act of inquiry as the most precious possession of those who attain freedom."--Taken from editor's introduction and preface.
