Book Synopsis Computers in Translation by : John Newton
Download or read book Computers in Translation written by John Newton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers have been attempting to develop systems that would emulate the human translation process for some forty years. What is it about human language that makes this such a daunting challenge? While other software packages have achieved rapid and lasting success, machine translation has failed to penetrate the worldwide market to any appreciable extent. Does this merely reflect a reluctance to adopt it, or does it signal a more fundamental and intractable problem? Computers in Translation is a comprehensive guide to the practical issues surrounding machine translation and computer-based translation tools. Translators, system designers, system operators and researchers present the facts about machine translation: its history, its successes, its limitations and its potential. Three chapters deal with actual machine translation applications, discussing installations including the METEO system, used in Canada to translate weather forecasts and weather reports, and the system used in the Foreign Technology Division of the US Air Force.
Book Synopsis Advances in Unconventional Computing by : Andrew Adamatzky
Download or read book Advances in Unconventional Computing written by Andrew Adamatzky and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-26 with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unconventional computing is a niche for interdisciplinary science, cross-bred of computer science, physics, mathematics, chemistry, electronic engineering, biology, material science and nanotechnology. The aims of this book are to uncover and exploit principles and mechanisms of information processing in and functional properties of physical, chemical and living systems to develop efficient algorithms, design optimal architectures and manufacture working prototypes of future and emergent computing devices. This second volume presents experimental laboratory prototypes and applied computing implementations. Emergent molecular computing is presented by enzymatic logical gates and circuits, and DNA nano-devices. Reaction-diffusion chemical computing is exemplified by logical circuits in Belousov-Zhabotinsky medium and geometrical computation in precipitating chemical reactions. Logical circuits realised with solitons and impulses in polymer chains show advances in collision-based computing. Photo-chemical and memristive devices give us a glimpse on hot topics of a novel hardware. Practical computing is represented by algorithms of collective and immune-computing and nature-inspired optimisation. Living computing devices are implemented in real and simulated cells, regenerating organisms, plant roots and slime mould. The book is the encyclopedia, the first ever complete authoritative account, of the theoretical and experimental findings in the unconventional computing written by the world leaders in the field. All chapters are self-contains, no specialist background is required to appreciate ideas, findings, constructs and designs presented. This treatise in unconventional computing appeals to readers from all walks of life, from high-school pupils to university professors, from mathematicians, computers scientists and engineers to chemists and biologists.

Book Synopsis Expressing the Shape and Colour of Personality by : Thérèse Mei-Yau Woodcock
Download or read book Expressing the Shape and Colour of Personality written by Thérèse Mei-Yau Woodcock and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the distillation of the author's 35 years' experience of using Lowenfeld Mosaics and Lowenfeld practice in the treatment of unhappy and disturbed children, in the investigation of children' acculturation to alien cultures, and in working with the deaf. Through case studies, 80 colour mosaics made by children and adults are used to illuminate Lowenfeld's theories. Mosaics are one of several non-verbal techniques invented by Lowenfeld to enable children to express their thoughts and feelings directly without having to find words. The circumvention of language attracted Mosaics to the notice of social anthropologists, such as Margaret Mead, looking for tools for cross-cultural research. The author gives a detailed account of how to set about using Mosaics in a clinical setting, how to introduce them to a young person, and how to discuss the resultant creation. The wide range of case studies presented includes the use of Mosaics to study the degree of comparative acculturation of samples of 12-year old Chinese children, in mainland China, London, and San Francisco. Th r se Woodcock has taught the use of Mosaics to a wide range of professionals who work with children - child psychotherapists and psychiatrists, paediatric social workers, paediatric occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, play therapists, guardians, specialist nurses, workers with the deaf, among others. Expressing the Shape and Colour of Personality offers an opportunity to anyone working professionally with children or young people to benefit from her unrivalled experience.

Book excerpt: In A Grammar of Muylaq’ Aymara, Matt Coler provides a detailed description of a highly-endangered variety of Aymara spoken in the remote Andean village of Muylaque (Muylaq’i), in Southern Peru. This heretofore undescribed variety has many unique characteristics that shed light on the impressive extent of variation in Aymara. Using natural language data gathered during several field trips to Muylaque, Coler offers a detailed analysis of the phonetics, phonology, morphology and syntax of Aymara. Additionally, A Grammar of Muylaq’ Aymara includes complete interlinear glosses for several personal narratives. A Grammar of Muylaq’ Aymara represents an important contribution not only to the study of Aymara, Aymara variation, and Andean languages, but also to research into linguistic typology and language contact.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In South America indigenous languages are extremely diverse. There are over one hundred language families in this region alone. Contributors from around the world explore the history and structure of these languages, combining insights from archaeology and genetics with innovative linguistic analysis. The book aims to uncover regional patterns and potential deeper genealogical relations between the languages. Based on a large-scale database of features from sixty languages, the book analyses major language families such as Tupian and Arawakan, as well as the Quechua/Aymara complex in the Andes, the Isthmo-Colombian region and the Andean foothills. It explores the effects of historical change in different grammatical systems and fills gaps in the World Atlas of Language Structures (WALS) database, where South American languages are underrepresented. An important resource for students and researchers interested in linguistics, anthropology and language evolution.
