Book excerpt: By examining linguistic variation in Aristophanic comedy, Andreas Willi opens up a new perspective on intra-dialectal diversity in Classical Attic Greek. A representative range of registers, technical languages, sociolects and (comic) idiolects is described and analysed. Stylistic and statistical observations are combined and supplemented by typological comparisons with material drawn from sociolinguistic research on modern languages. The resulting portrayal of the Attic dialect deepens our understanding of various socio-cultural phenomena reflected in Aristophanes' work, such as the spread of sophistic culture, the re-evaluation of gender roles and the status of foreigners in Athenian society.

This book was released on 2022-07-04 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subject of The Many Canons of Tibetan Buddhism are both the mainstream Tibetan canons of translated Buddhist classics (known as the Bka' 'gyur & Bstan 'gyur), and the alternative canons of literature of the Nyingma sectarian traditions (known as the Rnying ma rgyud 'bum). The first section discusses the formation and transmission of Tibetan "canonical" texts, but also includes important works of reference, such as a Bka' gdams pa handbook and several unique catalogues. It also features a first report on Tibetan textual transmission in Mongolia. The second section not only presents interpretative analysis of one of the most important alternative canons in Tibet, the Rnying ma rgyud 'bum, but also discusses essential issues of legitimacy, authority and lineage during the "gray" period of the tenth to twelfth centuries which laid the foundation for the formation of all ensuing Tibetan canons. The volume thus develops fresh perspectives on the nature, plurality and contents of canons in Tibetan Buddhism.

Book excerpt: Script and writing were among the most important inventions in human history, and until the invention of printing, the handwritten book was the primary medium of literary and cultural transmission. Although the study of manuscripts is already quite advanced for many regions of the world, no unified discipline of ‘manuscript studies’ has yet evolved which is capable of treating handwritten books from East Asia, India and the Islamic world equally alongside the European manuscript tradition. This book, which aims to begin the interdisciplinary dialogue needed to arrive at a truly systematic and comparative approach to manuscript cultures worldwide, brings together papers by leading researchers concerned with material, philological and cultural aspects of different manuscript traditions.

Download or read book Buddhism and Buddhist Literature of South-East Asia written by Peter Skilling and published by . This book was released on 2010-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twelve essays in this volume survey aspects of Buddhism and Buddhist literature in pre-modern South-East Asia and Thailand, drawing on Pali and vernacular texts, liturgy, and inscriptions. They discuss Theravadin conceptions of the Bodhisatta, relations between Sanskrit and vernacular literature in Thailand, and questions of the transmission and dissemination of Buddhist ideas and narratives through sermon and ceremony. The texts studied are both products and agents in the intellectual and social world of South-East Asian Buddhism. Broader questions include the advent of Theravada Buddhism to South-East Asia anf the role of South-East Asia in Buddhist studies.
