Book excerpt: The exponential growth of Internet brings to focus the need to control such large scale networks so that they appear as coherent, almost intelligent, organ isms. It is a challenge to regulate such a complex network of heterogeneous elements with dynamically changing traffic conditions. To make such a sys tem reliable and manageable, the decision making should be decentralized. It is desirable to find simple local rules and strategies that can produce coherent and purposeful global behavior. Furthermore, these control mechanisms must be adaptive to effectively respond to continually varying network conditions. Such adaptive, distributed, localized mechanisms would provide a scalable so lution for controlling large networks. The need for such schemes arises in a variety of settings. In this monograph, we focus on localized approach to quality of service routing. Routing in the current Internet focuses primarily on connectivity and typi cally supports only the "best-effort" datagram service. The routing protocols deployed such as OSPF use the shortest path only routing paradigm, where routing is optimized for a single metric such as hop count or administrative weight. While these protocols are well suited for traditional data applications such as ftp and telnet, they are not adequate for many emerging applications such as IP telephony, video on demand and teleconferencing, which require stringent delay and bandwidth guarantees. The "shortest paths" chosen for the "best effort" service may not have sufficient resources to provide the requisite service for these applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to IWQoS2001 in Karlsruhe! Quality of Service is a very active research field, especially in the networking community. Research in this area has been going on for some time, with results getting into development and finally reaching the stage of products. Trends in research as well as a reality check will be the purpose of this Ninth InternationalW orkshopo n Quality of Service. IWQoS isa ver y successful seriesof workshops and has established itself as one of the premier forums for the presentation and discussion of new research and ideas on QoS. The importance of this workshop series is also reflected in the large number of excellents ubmissions. Nearly 150 papers from all continents were submitted to the workshop, about a fifth of these being short papers. The program committee were very pleased witht he quality of the submissions andh ad the difficult task of selecting the relatively small number of papers which could be accepted for IWQoS2001. Due to the tough competition, many very good papers had to be rejected.

Book excerpt: The success of the IP architecture is largely due to the simplicity, robustness and scalability that resulted from its the connectionless design methodology. As the Internet evolves it must support new services such as QoS and when extensions are made to the IP architecture to support such services, its basic connectionless model must be preserved to retain the scalability and robustness that made it so successful. In the past few years, with the Internet becoming the main communication infrastructure IP networks are faced with two challenging problems that require immediate attention: traffic, engineering and supporting guaranteed services providing efficient, robust and scalable solutions to these problems within the framework of the connectionless IP has become extremely important and urgent.

Book excerpt: This book contains the refereed proceedings of the 3rd International IFIP-TC6 Networking Conference, Networking 2004. Conferences in the Networking series span the interests of several distinct, but related, TC6 working groups, including Working Groups 6.2, 6.3, and 6.8. Re?ecting this, the conference was structured with three Special Tracks: (i) Networking Technologies, Services, and Protocols; (ii) Performance of Computer and Communication Networks; and (iii) Mobile and Wireless Communications. However, beyond providing a forum for the presentation of high-quality - search in various complementary aspects of networking, the conference was also targetedtocontributingtoauni?edviewofthe?eldandtofosteringtheinter- tion and exchange of fruitful ideas between the various related (and overlapping) specialized subcommunities therein. Towards this second objective, more than a few conference sessions (and thematic sections in this book) ‘cut across’ the Special Tracks, along more generic or fundamental concepts. Networking 2004 was fortunate to attract very high interest among the c- munity, and the conference received 539 submissions from 44 countries in all ?ve continents. These ?gures correspond to a remarkable increase in subm- sions from the previous very successful events (roughly, a 156% increase over Networking 2000 and 71% over Networking 2002), and indicate that Netw- king conferences are progressively becoming established as worldwide reference events in the ?eld.

Book excerpt: Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks enable users to directly share digital content (such as audio, video, and text files) as well as real-time data (such as telephony traffic) with other users without depending on a central server. Although originally popularized by unlicensed online music services such as Napster, P2P networking has recently emerged as a viable multimillion dollar business model for the distribution of information, telecommunications, and social networking. Written at an accessible level for any reader familiar with fundamental Internet protocols, the book explains the conceptual operations and architecture underlying basic P2P systems using well-known commercial systems as models and also provides the means to improve upon these models with innovations that will better performance, security, and flexibility. Peer-to-Peer Networking and Applications is thus both a valuable starting point and an important reference to those practitioners employed by any of the 200 companies with approximately $400 million invested in this new and lucrative technology. - Uses well-known commercial P2P systems as models, thus demonstrating real-world applicability. - Discusses how current research trends in wireless networking, high-def content, DRM, etc. will intersect with P2P, allowing readers to account for future developments in their designs. - Provides online access to the Overlay Weaver P2P emulator, an open-source tool that supports a number of peer-to-peer applications with which readers can practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What most of us know as "the Internet" is actually a set of largely autonomous, loosely coordinated communication networks. As the influence of the Internet continues to grow, understanding its real nature is imperative to acting on a wide range of policy issues. This timely new book explains basic design choices that underlie the Internet's success, identifies key trends in the evolution of the Internet, evaluates current and prospective technical, operational, and management challenges, and explores the resulting implications for decision makers. The committee-composed of distinguished leaders from both the corporate and academic community-makes recommendations aimed at policy makers, industry, and researchers, going on to discuss a variety of issues: How the Internet's constituent parts are interlinked, and how economic and technical factors make maintaining the Internet's seamless appearance complicated. How the Internet faces scaling challenges as it grows to meet the demands of users in the future. Tensions inherent between open innovation on the Internet and the ability of innovators to capture the commercial value of their breakthroughs. Regulatory issues posed by the Internet's entry into other sectors, such as telephony.
