Book Synopsis Superconductivity And Localization by : Michael V Sadovskii
Download or read book Superconductivity And Localization written by Michael V Sadovskii and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000-02-18 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a review of theoretical and experimental work on the problem of the interplay of Anderson localization and superconductivity in strongly disordered systems. Superconductivity persists close to disorder-induced metal-insulator transition in a number of real systems, e.g. amorphous metals and compounds, systems disordered by fast neutron irradiation, systems with impurities, etc. High temperature superconductors are especially interesting from this point of view, as the experiments with controllable disordering may provide important clues to the nature of electronic states in these systems. The book starts with a brief discussion on modern aspects of localization theory, including the basic concept of scaling, self-consistent theory of localization and interaction effects. After that it analyzes disorder effects on Cooper pairing and superconductivity transition temperature as well as Ginzburg-Landau equations for superconductors that are close to the Anderson transition. A necessary generalization of the usual theory of “dirty” superconductors is formulated which allows one to analyze anomalies of the main superconducting properties close to disorder-induced metal-insulator transition. Finally, the book reviews a number of experiments demonstrating superconductivity close to the Anderson transition, in both traditional and high Tc superconductors.
Book Synopsis The Mott Metal-Insulator Transition by : Florian Gebhard
Download or read book The Mott Metal-Insulator Transition written by Florian Gebhard and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little do we reliably know about the Mott transition, and we are far from a complete understanding of the metal --insulator transition due to electr- electron interactions. Mott summarized his basic ideas on the subject in his wonderful book Metal--Insulator nansitions that first appeared in 1974 11. 1). In his view, a Motk insulator displays a gap for charge-carrying excitations due to electron cowelations, whose importance is expressed by the presence of local magnetic moments regardless of whether or not they are ordered. Since the subject is far from being settled, different opinions on specific aspects of the Mott transition still persist. This book naturally embodies my own understanding of the phenomenon, inspired by the work of the late Sir Kevill Mott. The purpose of this book is twofold: first, to give a detailed presen- tion of the basic theoretical concopts for Mott insulators and, second, to test these ideas against the results from model calculations. For this purpose the Hubbard model and some of its derivatives are best suited. The Hubbard model describes a Mott transition with a mere minimum of tunable par- eters, and various exact statements and even exact solutions exist in certain limiting cases. Exact solutions not only allow us to test our basic ideas, but also help to assess the quality of approxin~ate theories for correlated electron systems.

Book Synopsis New Spin on Metal-Insulator Transitions by : Andrej Pustogow
Download or read book New Spin on Metal-Insulator Transitions written by Andrej Pustogow and published by Mdpi AG. This book was released on 2023-04-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal‒insulator transitions (MITs) constitute a core subject of fundamental condensed matter research. The localization of conduction electrons occurs in a large variety of materials and engenders intriguing quantum phenomena such as unconventional superconductivity and exotic magnetism. Nearby an MIT, minuscule changes of the interaction strength via chemical substitution, doping, physical pressure, or even disorder can trigger spectacular resistivity changes from zero in a superconductor to infinity in an insulator near T = 0. While approaching an insulating state from the conducting side, deviations from Fermi-liquid transport in bad and strange metals are the rule rather than the exception. As the drosophila of electron‒electron interactions, the Mott MIT receives particular attention from theory as it can be studied using the Hubbard model. On the experimental side, organic charge-transfer salts and transition metal oxides are versatile platforms for working toward solving the puzzles of correlated electron systems. This Special Issue provides a view into the ongoing research endeavors investigating emergent phenomena around MITs.

Book Synopsis Metal-Insulator Transition in Two-Dimensional Electron Systems by : Svetlana Anisimova
Download or read book Metal-Insulator Transition in Two-Dimensional Electron Systems written by Svetlana Anisimova and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interplay between strong electron-electron interactions and disorder has been a long-standing question in condensed matter physics. The discovery of the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in two-dimensional (2D) electron systems challenged one of the most influential theories of the last century which stated that "there is no true metallic state in 2D". However, the scaling theory of localization did not account for interactions between electrons. This book provides recent thermodynamic and transport experimental findings which indicate that MIT in 2D can be considered as a quantum phase transition. In the ballistic regime, strong interactions between carriers lead to Pauli spin susceptibility growing critically at low electron densities. Such behavior is characteristic in the close vicinity of a phase transition. In the immediate vicinity of the MIT, both the resistance and the effective interactions exhibit a fan-like spread as the MIT is crossed. A resistance-interaction flow diagram clearly reveals a quantum critical point. The book should be especially useful to graduate students, postdoctoral researches, or scientists working in the field of mesoscopic physics.

Book Synopsis The Mott Metal-Insulator Transition by : Florian Gebhard
Download or read book The Mott Metal-Insulator Transition written by Florian Gebhard and published by Springer Tracts in Modern Physics. This book was released on 1997-03-20 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The metal-insulator transition due to electron-electron interactions is one of the most celebrated but least understood problems in condensed matter physics. Here this subject is comprehensively reviewed for the first time since Sir Nevill Mott's monograph of 1990. A pedagogical introduction to the basic concepts for the Mott transition, the Hubbard model, and various analytical approaches to correlated electron systems is presented. A new classification scheme for Mott insulators as Mott-Hubbard and Mott-Heisenberg insulators is proposed. Traditional methods are critically examined for their potential to describe the Mott transition. This book will make an excellent reference for scientists researching in the field of electron transport in condensed matter.

Download or read book Metal-insulator Transition in Low Dimensional La{sub 0.75}Sr{sub 0.25}VO3 Thin Films written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report on the metal-insulator transition that occurs as a function of film thickness in ultrathin La{sub 0.75}Sr{sub 0.25}VO3 films. The metal-insulator transition displays a critical thickness of 5 unit cell. Above the critical thickness, metallic films exhibit a temperature driven metal-insulator transition with weak localization behavior. With decreasing film thickness, oxygen octahedron rotation in the films increases, causing enhanced electron-electron correlation. The electronelectron correlations in ultrathin films induce the transition from metal to insulator in addition to Anderson localization.
