Book excerpt: Many wireless sensor network (WSN) applications depend on knowing the position of nodes within the network if they are to function efficiently. Location information is used, for example, in item tracking, routing protocols and controlling node density. Configuring each node with its position manually is cumbersome, and not feasible in networks with mobile nodes or dynamic topologies. WSNs, therefore, rely on localisation algorithms for the sensor nodes to determine their own physical location. The basis of several localisation algorithms is the theory that the higher the number of reference nodes (called references') used, the greater the accuracy of the estimated position. However, this approach makes computation more complex and increases the likelihood that the location estimation may be inaccurate. Such inaccuracy in estimation could be due to including data from nodes with a large measurement error, or from nodes that intentionally aim to undermine the localisation process. This approach also has limited success in networks with sparse references, or where data cannot always be collected from many references (due for example to communication obstructions or bandwidth limitations). These situations require a method for achieving reliable and accurate localisation using a limited number of references. Designing a localisation algorithm that could estimate node position with high accuracy using a low number of references is not a trivial problem. As the number of references decreases, more statistical weight is attached to each reference's location estimate. The overall localisation accuracy therefore greatly depends on the robustness of the selection method that is used to eliminate inaccurate references. Various localisation algorithms and their performance in WSNs were studied. Information-fusion theory was also investigated and a new technique, rooted in information-fusion theory, was proposed for defining the best criteria for the selection of references. The researcher chose selection criteria to identify only those references that would increase the overall localisation accuracy. Using these criteria also minimises the number of iterations needed to refine the accuracy of the estimated position. This reduces bandwidth requirements and the time required for a position estimation after any topology change (or even after initial network deployment). The resultant algorithm achieved two main goals simultaneously: accurate location discovery and information fusion. Moreover, the algorithm fulfils several secondary design objectives: self-organising nature, simplicity, robustness, localised processing and security. The proposed method was implemented and evaluated using a commercial network simulator. This evaluation of the proposed algorithm's performance demonstrated that it is superior to other localisation algorithms evaluated: using fewer references, the algorithm performed better in terms of accuracy, robustness, security and energy efficiency. These results confirm that the proposed selection method and associated localisation algorithm allow for reliable and accurate location information to be gathered using a minimum number of references. This decreases the computational burden of gathering and analysing location data from the high number of references previously believed to be necessary.

Book excerpt: Work described in this thesis is concerned with localisation techniques, for determining the position, of wireless sensors whilst these are immersed in confined industrial processes, such as those occurring in the chemical, pharmaceutical and food processing industries. Two different approaches to localisation were investigated. The first approach employed an existing hardware system that used ultra wide band (UWB) signals whist the second approach used a network localisation method based on information from narrow-band received signals. A prototype UWB-based localisation algorithm processed experimental received UWB pulses to detect their leading edges (LE) that were used to derive Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA) data. In turn TDoA data were converted into distances and used to compute the locations of the sensor nodes. Nevertheless, the process of detecting the LEs caused significant errors in the localisation process. To deal with this problem new automated adaptive LE detection methods were derived that succeeded in reducing localisation errors by half, compared to the prototype method, reaching accuracies of ±2cm. Thorough analysis of TDoA profiles revealed that these follow specific trends depending on the positions of the sensor nodes. A number of properties of TDoA profiles are proved mathematically and incorporated into seven localisation algorithms. These algorithms were examined using experimental TDoA data and shown to achieve average localisation errors up to 3cm. Network-based localisation was examined at a later stage of this research since complexities of large scale measurements and difficulties with equipment, delayed acquiring experimental data. The deployed network consisted of a number of nodes whose positions were known (anchors) that were used to estimate the positions of sensor nodes whose positions where considered to be unknown. Localisation was based on received signal strength (RSS) data, at every node to be localised, in anticipation that RSS could provide distance information that could be used in the localisation procedure. Nevertheless, fluctuations in RSS only allowed using localisation algorithms that associated RSS to the positions of anchors. The average localisation error in the network-based localisation algorithms was between 30cm to 100cm.

This is due in part to the increasing miniaturization, decreasing costs and the identification of real-world scenarios where sensors can be deployed. Device-free Passive Localisation (DfPL) is the identification of a person without the need for any physical devices i.e. tags or sensors. A DfPL system uses the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) for monitoring and tracking changes in a Wireless Network infrastructure. The changes in the signal along with prior fingerprinting of a physical location allow identification of a person's location. The human body contains more than 70% water and it is known that resonance frequency of water is 2.4 GHz. Thus the human body reacts as an absorber attenuating the wireless signal. Many of the proposed RSSI-based technologies use the fingerprinting method for estimating the location of the tracked person. Fingerprinting in location estimation systems refers to a method that compares the fingerprint of some characteristic of a signal that is location dependent. This research is focused on implementing DfPL using a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) to locate the presence of an individual within indoor locations. The main reason for deploying Wireless Sensor Network DfP Localisation is due in part to the benefits of deploying when a wireless network infrastructure is not available. Thus, a novel system that can identify multi-occupants in an environment using patterns of motion from those monitored areas has been deployed. A Pattern Recognition Neural etwork was used to identify two people in the environment. No other work based on the Device-free Passive Localisation (DfPL) technique has focused on multi-occupancy. DfPL is a new approach for detecting a person's presence and estimating the actual position of that person. Various functions such as: tracking, identification, multi-person and automatic construction of a passive radio map could be implemented for DfPL systems. This project is focused on addressing the possibility of deploying a multi-person localisation system based on Wireless Sensor Network DfPL. RSSI-based localisation techniques became more attractive because of their simplicity and robustness in environments affected by multipath compared to the techniques based on metrics like time or angle. The simplicity is achieved due to RSSI-based localisation systems not requiring additional hardware. Further, the RSSI values can be obtained by using functions that are already provided. How- ever, RSSI-based techniques are significantly affected by the variance of the wireless signal.
