Book Synopsis Un-locking the Potential for Change by : Sean William Connelly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian communities are being forced to integrate planning for global issues (e.g. climate change and trade agreements) into systems that are already struggling with increased infrastructure costs, dwindling natural resources, and land-use development conflicts. Many are turning to sustainable community development as a means of integrating planning priorities, improving public participation, leveraging resources, and generating creative and practical solutions to shared economic, environmental, and social problems. However, despite integrating sustainable development principles into their planning and decision-making processes, few have succeeded in translating high-level sustainability goals and objectives into tangible projects in their communities. Why are some communities more successful at bridging the planning - implementation gap than others? This dissertation research develops a framework for mobilization for sustainable community development consisting of actors, motivations, and decision-making processes to explore the role of community mobilization in award winning sustainability case studies in urban (Toronto and Surrey), rural (Craik, Sk.) and First Nations (Rolling River, MB) contexts. The findings from the research stress the importance of linking institutional capacity and community-based processes in order to bridge the gap between planning and implementation. Linking institutional and community -based processes requires a shift in the way we think about planning and implementation as discrete entities, in the way options are evaluated and in how we engage as citizens and government in the decision-making process. These findings have important practical and theoretical implications for understanding sustainability initiatives. To advance sustainability, community engagement needs to go beyond planning processes. Communities need more than plans - they need committed leadership, resources and willingness to learn and adapt as they transition to more sustainable communities. The research indicates that planning processes are most effective when the outcome is not a plan but an increased capacity both of local governments and the broader community to address the complexity of sustainability implementation. Focusing on the relationship between values, structure and agency provides the foundation for greater theory building of mobilization for sustainable community development.

Book Synopsis Managing Natural Resources for Development in Africa by : Washington Odongo Ochola
Download or read book Managing Natural Resources for Development in Africa written by Washington Odongo Ochola and published by IDRC. This book was released on 2010 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complex and dynamic interlinks between natural resource management (NRM) and development have long been recognized by national and international research and development organizations and have generated voluminous literature. However, much of what is available in the form of university course books, practical learning manuals and reference materials in NRM is based on experiences from outside Africa. Managing Natural Resources for Development in Africa: A Resource Book provides an understanding of the various levels at which NRM issues occur and are being addressed scientifically, economically, socially and politically. The book's nine chapters present state-of-the-art perspectives within a holistic African context. The book systematically navigates the tricky landscape of integrated NRM, with special reference to Eastern and Southern Africa, against the backdrop of prevailing local, national, regional and global social, economic and environmental challenges. The authors' wide experience, the rich references made to emerging challenges and opportunities, and the presentation of different tools, principles, approaches, case studies and processes make the book a rich and valuable one-stop resource for postgraduate students, researchers, policymakers and NRM practitioners. The book is designed to help the reader grasp in-depth NRM perspectives and presents innovative guidance for research design and problem solving, including review questions, learning activities and recommended further reading. The book was developed through a writeshop process by a multi-disciplinary team of lecturers from the University of Nairobi, Egerton University, Kenyatta University, the University of Zimbabwe, the University of Malawi, Makerere University and the University of Dar es Salam. In addition, selected NRM experts from regional and international research organizations including the World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF), the Africa Forest Forum, RUFORUM, IIRR and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) participated in the writeshop and contributed material to the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most articulate critics of the destructive effects of neoliberal policies in Africa, and in particular of the ways in which they have eroded the gains of independence, Issa Shivji shows in two extensive essays in this book that the role of NGOs in Africa cannot be understood without placing them in their political and historical context. As structural adjustment programs were imposed across Africa in the 1980s and 1990s, the international financial institutions and development agencies began giving money to NGOs for programs to minimize the more glaring inequalities perpetuated by their policies. As a result, NGOs have flourished--and played an unwitting role in consolidating the neoliberal hegemony in Africa. Shivji argues that if social policy is to be determined by citizens rather than the donors, African NGOs must become catalysts for change rather than the catechists of aid that they are today.

In this book, principles, diversity and applications of agroecological practices for a range of systems are presented, transforming scientific research and participatory knowledge of production into practical application. It illustrates a broad range of research and teaching being used within the farming community to demonstrate best practice and current state-of-play within the field. Agroecological methods used in crop farming, grass-based livestock farming, fish production, and other complex farming systems are discussed. Conclusions are drawn from studies to provide an outlook on future trends of agroecological practices and on policies supporting implementation.Due to emphasis on real-life application, it is relevant not only to students of the agricultural sciences and public policy, but also to researchers, stakeholders and policy makers involved in the development of sustainable agriculture.

Book Synopsis Theories and Practices of Development by : Katie Willis
Download or read book Theories and Practices of Development written by Katie Willis and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the twentieth century, governments sought to achieve 'development' not only in their own countries, but also in other regions of the world; particularly in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. This focus on 'development' as a goal has continued into the twenty-first century, for example through the United Nations Millennium Development Targets. While development is often viewed as something very positive, it is also very important to consider the possible detrimental effects it may have on the natural environment, different social groups and on the cohesion and stability of societies. In this important book, Katie Willis investigates and places in a historical context, the development theories behind contemporary debates such as globalization and transnationalism. The main definitions of 'development' and 'development theory' are outlined with a description and explanation of how approaches have changed over time. The differing explanations of inequalities in development, both spatially and socially, and the reasoning behind different development policies are also considered. By drawing on pre-twentieth century European development theories and examining current policies in Europe and the USA, the book not only stresses commonalities in development theorizing over time and space, but also the importance of context in theory construction. This topical book provides an ideal introduction to development theories for students in geography, development studies, area studies, anthropology and sociology. It contains student-friendly features, including boxed case studies with examples, definitions, summary sections, suggestions for further reading, discussion questions and website information.
