Book excerpt: During the past three decades, it has been demonstrated that chiral effective field theory (EFT) represents a powerful tool to deal with hadronic interactions at low energy in a systematic and model-independent way. Within the last decade, precision nucleon-nucleon (NN) potentials based upon chiral EFT have been constructed. Most of these potentials have been represented in momentum-space. However, there are some important applications in nuclear physics for which a representation of the NN potential in position space is preferred. Therefore, in this thesis, a NN potential is constructed that is local and given in position space in a relatively simple form. In terms of the chiral expansion, we advance to next-to-next-to-leading order and achieve accuracy that is superior to similar potentials constructed by other researchers. Our potential will serve as an excellent starting point for ab initio few- and many- body calculations in nuclear physics.

Book excerpt: Stepping Stones is a first-person narrative of one family’s raising a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and the persevering and progressive self-development it provoked. From the distinct advantage of countless wayfinding steps more than twenty years in the making, the parents and grown son recount their initial ignorance and vulnerability to emerge as an inspirational example of perseverance, growth and success. As the first student in the school district diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, the son unfortunately became the blunt instrument of change it required but didn’t know it needed. Despite advances in diagnoses, therapies and other accommodations, many systemic inequities against the neurodivergent remain to be dismantled. This book introduces the concepts required to continue organizational change. And to all parents and caregivers of children with ASD, this true tale offers pragmatic guidance, self-help encouragement, and real reason for hope.

Book excerpt: While attempts to solve the equations of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) numerically in the low energy limit are increasingly successful ("lattice QCD"), Chiral Effective Field Theory (ChEFT) remains a potent alternative method for deriving nuclear force potentials. Previous calculations within framework of ChEFT up to 4th order (next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order, N3LO) show generally good agreement with experiment. However, some persistent problems with N3LO potentials as well as the question of order-by-order convergence of ChEFT require calculations up to higher orders. In this work, I present calculations of pion exchange contributions to nucleon-nucleon potentials up to 5th and 6th order (N4LO and N5LO). N4LO calculations solve some of the previous persistent problems and improve the agreement with nucleon-nucleon (NN) scattering experiments in peripheral partial waves. N5LO contributions further improve the agreement with experiment and also turn out to be smaller compared to N4LO, thus showing the trend for convergence. Finally, I present the full NN potential at N4LO, which shows excellent agreement with experimental data in all partial waves and can be applied further in nuclear structure calculations. Since a modified power counting scheme is used for N4LO potential, full NN potentials at NLO, NNLO and N3LO are also recalculated using the modified scheme. This allows for systematic truncation error estimation when applying potentials to calculations of nuclear structure and reactions.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of some key developments in the understanding of the nucleon-nucleon interaction and nuclear many-body theory. The main problems at the level of meson exchange physics have largely been solved, and we now have an effective nucleon-nucleon interaction, pioneered in a renormalization group formalism by several of us at Stony Brook and our colleagues at Naples, which is nearly universally accepted as the unique low-momentum interaction that includes all experimental information to date. Our present understanding of these issues is based on a multi-step development in which different scientific insights and a wide range of physical and mathematical methodologies fed into each other. It is best appreciated by looking at the ‘steps along the way’, starting with the pioneering work of Brueckner and his collaborators that was just as necessary and important as the insightful improvements to Brueckner's theory by Hans Bethe and his students. Moving on from there, microscopic methods for nuclear structure calculations using the Brueckner G-matrix, and later low-momentum nucleon interactions, were developed and applied. With their influential 1967 paper, Brown and Kuo prepared the effective theory that allowed the description of nuclear properties directly from the underlying nucleon-nucleon interaction. Later, the addition of ‘Brown-Rho scaling’ to the one-boson-exchange model deepened the understanding of nuclear matter saturation, carbon-14 dating and the structure of neutron stars.

Book excerpt: Effective field theory (EFT), a technique used extensively in particle physics, provides a framework for systematically describing nuclear systems in a way consistent with quantum chromodynamics, the underlying theory of strong interactions. Because it offers the possibility of a unified description of all low-energy processes involving nucleons, it has the potential to become the foundation of conventional nuclear physics.Since the early 1990's when Weinberg applied the techniques of EFT to multiple-nucleon systems, significant developments have been made. However, serious obstacles have also been encountered. This book contains the proceedings of the Workshop on Nuclear Physics with Effective Field Theory, held in the Kellogg Radiation Laboratory at Caltech on the 26th and 27th of February 1998, which specifically addressed those issues. Physicists from different areas of sub-atomic physics gathered in an attempt to arrive at a consistent power counting scheme for the nucleon-nucleon interaction, a first step toward dealing with few-nucleon systems and ultimately nuclear matter and finite nuclei.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade, astrophysical observations of neutron stars — both as isolated and binary sources — have paved the way for a deeper understanding of the structure and dynamics of matter beyond nuclear saturation density. The mapping between astrophysical observations and models of dense matter based on microscopic dynamics has been poorly investigated so far. However, the increased accuracy of present and forthcoming observations may be instrumental in resolving the degeneracy between the predictions of different equations of state. Astrophysical and laboratory probes have the potential to paint to a new coherent picture of nuclear matter — and, more generally, strong interactions — over the widest range of densities occurring in the Universe. This book provides a self-contained account of neutron star properties, microscopic nuclear dynamics and the recent observational developments in multimessenger astronomy. It also discusses the unprecedented possibilities to shed light on long standing and fundamental issues, such as the validity of the description of matter in terms of pointlike baryons and leptons and the appearance of deconfined quarks in the high density regime. It will be of interest to researchers and advanced PhD students working in the fields of Astrophysics, Gravitational Physics, Nuclear Physics and Particle Physics. Key Features: Reviews state-of-the-art theoretical and experimental developments Self-contained and cross-disciplinary While being devoted to a very lively and fast developing field, the book fundamentally addresses methodological issues. Therefore, it will not be subject to fast obsolescence. Book excerpt: Quantum many-body theory as a discipline in its own right dates largely from the 1950's. It has developed since then to its current position as one of the cornerstones of modern theoretical physics. The field remains vibrant and active, vigorous and exciting. Its most powerful techniques are truly universal. They are constantly expanding to find new fields of application, while advances continue to be made in the more traditional areas. To commemorate the impending 80th birthdays of its two co-inventors, Firtz Coester and Hermann Kümmel, one such technique, namely the coupled cluster method, was especially highlighted at this meeting, the eleventh in the series of International Conferences on Recent Progress in Many-Body Theories. The history of the coupled cluster method as told here mirrors in many ways both the development of the entire discipline of microscopic quantum many-body theory and the history of the series of conferences. The series itself is universally recognised as being the premier series of meetings in this subject area. Its proceedings have always summarised the current state of the art through the lectures of its leading practitioners. The present volume is no exception. No serious researcher in quantum many-body theory or in any field which uses it can afford to be without this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is a comprehensive, systematic source of modern nuclear physics. It aims to summarize experimental and theoretical discoveries and an understanding of unstable nuclei and their exotic structures, which were opened up by the development of radioactive ion (RI) beam in the late 1980s. The handbook comprises three major parts. In the first part, the experiments and measured facts are well organized and reviewed. The second part summarizes recognized theories to explain the experimental facts introduced in the first part. Reflecting recent synergistic progress involving both experiment and theory, the chapters both parts are mutually related. The last part focuses on cosmo-nuclear physics—one of the mainstream subjects in modern nuclear physics. Those comprehensive topics are presented concisely. Supported by introductory reviews, all chapters are designed to present their topics in a manner accessible to readers at the graduate level. The book therefore serves as a valuable source for beginners as well, helping them to learn modern nuclear physics.
