Book Synopsis IUTAM Symposium on Mechanical Properties of Cellular Materials by : Han Zhao
Download or read book IUTAM Symposium on Mechanical Properties of Cellular Materials written by Han Zhao and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-25 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid cellular materials (foams, lattice materials, honeycombs, etc.) are attractive and have resulted in the creation of an active subject for structural, mechanical and material scientists in recent years. Indeed, constant progress in the manufacturing techniques are improving their properties and reducing their costs; and mass productions and industrial applications are beginning. An important mechanical problem is how to characterize and model the mechanical behaviour of these materials, which is necessary for industrial design and numerical predictions involved in various applications such as light weight structures, energy absorbers. This volume contains twenty-two contributions written by distinguished invited speakers from all part of the world to the iutam symposium on mechanical properties of cellular materials. It provides a survey on recent advances in the characterisation and modeling of the mechanical properties of solid cellular materials under static and dynamic loading as well as their applications in lightweight structures analysis and design. This volume will be of interest to structural, mechanical and material scientists and engineers working on different aspects of this new class of materials (for example in microstructure observation, micromechanical and multiscale modeling, phenomenological models, structural impact behaviour and numerical validation).

Book Synopsis Mechanical Properties and Deformation Behavior of Materials Having Ultra-Fine Microstructures by : M. Nastasi
Download or read book Mechanical Properties and Deformation Behavior of Materials Having Ultra-Fine Microstructures written by M. Nastasi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an attempt to meet the demand for new ultra-high strength materials, the processing of novel material configurations with unique microstructure is being explored in systems which are further and further from equilibrium. One such class of emerging materials is the so-called nanophased or nanostructured materials. This class of materials includes metals and alloys, ceramics, and polymers characterized by controlled ultra-fine microstructural features in the form oflayered, fibrous, or phase and grain distribution. While it is clear that these materials are in an early stage of development, there is now a sufficient body of literature to fuel discussion of how the mechanical properties and deformation behavior can be controlled through control of the microstructure. This NATO-Advanced Study Institute was convened in order to assess our current state of knowledge in the field of mechanical properties and deformation behavior in materials with ultra fine microstructure, to identify opportunities and needs for further research, and to identify the potential for technological applications. The Institute was the first international scientific meeting devoted to a discussion on the mechanical properties and deformation behavior of materials having grain sizes down to a few nanometers. Included in these discussions were the topics of superplasticity, tribology, and the supermodulus effect. Lectures were also presented which covered a variety of other themes including synthesis, characterization, thermodynamic stability, and general physical properties.

Book Synopsis Proceedings of the Plasma Space Science Symposium by : C.C. Chang
Download or read book Proceedings of the Plasma Space Science Symposium written by C.C. Chang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space, whether interplanetary or interstellar, is filled with plasma or ionized gas. The success of space exploration must count heavily on the study and understanding ofthe plasma. With this view, the Symposium ofPlasma Space Science was held at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., in cooperation with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Goddard Space Flight Center, June 11-14, 1963. The symposium was organized by Dr. C. C. Chang as director and Dr. Y. C. Whang as assistant director. The proceedings consist of four parts. The first part describes the solar phenomena: solar magnetic field, flare, atmosphere, cosmic rays, radiation, etc. The second part deals with the solar wind or interplanetary plasma. This includes both theoretical treatment and experimental measurements of Mariner H. The third part is concen trated on magnetosphere, with the measurements on trapped radiation from natural sources and high altitude thermonuclear explosions, and particularly with the magnetopause. The fourth and last part includes the ring current, geomagnetic storms, the aurora, the ionosphere and lunar surface phenomena. There was round table discussion in each session. Many interesting comments and stimulating arguments emerged from the floor and are included in the Proceedings.

Download or read book Homogenization and materials design of mechanical properties of textured materials based on zeroth-, first- and second-order bounds of linear behavior written by Lobos Fernández, Mauricio and published by KIT Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-09 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work approaches the fields of homogenization and of materials design for the linear and nonlinear mechanical properties with prescribed properties-profile. The set of achievable properties is bounded by the zeroth-order bounds (which are material specific), the first-order bounds (containing volume fractions of the phases) and the second-order Hashin-Shtrikman bounds with eigenfields in terms of tensorial texture coefficients for arbitrarily anisotropic textured materials.
