Book Synopsis Urban Space: experiences and Reflections from the Global South by : Hernández García, Jaime
Download or read book Urban Space: experiences and Reflections from the Global South written by Hernández García, Jaime and published by Sello Editorial Javeriano Cali. This book was released on 2018-12-14 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The structuring of Urban Space is as topical as ever in this era of climate change, hyper-urbanisation, post-digital labour markets, and geo-political power shifts. Scholarship of the contemporary urban condition is dominated by studies and examples drawn from the global north. Yet, cities of the global south are distinctive from those of the global north. Socio-political conditions structure patterns and practices of urban reproduction and, in turn, Urban Space reflects conditions in the Global South. The result is different space related outcomes. This is the central topic of this collection. In this book, a unique collection of case study-based accounts posits both English and Spanish academic literature to interpret and reinterpret the appropriation, negotiation and reconfiguration of Urban Space in cities, from Colombia to Namibia. This collection will be of particular interest to urban scholars and others interested in contemporary urban change, especially those with an interest in the Global South. Readers will encounter new perspectives on the State’s enduring influence in urban land and territory reconfiguration and the contrasting wider rhetoric that affords and legitimises a key role for the private sector. The case studies also illuminate opportunities and possibilities for grassroots organising to challenge prevailing city actor hierarchies. They also highlight the political-economic consequences of particular cases of bus rapid transport projects for spatial and social segregation. Across these and other topics, recurring themes of inequality, governance, and environment are investigated in contested urban terrains. The result is a unique collection of viewpoints, with a common, critical narrative on the present and future challenges facing cities of the Global South.
Book Synopsis Vitalizing Local Government Performance, Citizen Participation and Socioeconomic Development by : Ganesh Prasad Pandeya
Download or read book Vitalizing Local Government Performance, Citizen Participation and Socioeconomic Development written by Ganesh Prasad Pandeya and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-03-21 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about citizen participation and its effects on local planning and local accountability, showing how participation can improve local government performance. It addresses the rhetoric of citizen participation and its negative effects such as discrimination, exclusions, elite captures, clientelism, and shallow participation. Applying mixed-methods of analysis, the book argues that local government performance depends substantially on circumstances, especially the degree of citizen participation, level of socioeconomic development, and the achieved state of social mobilization. As participation takes place in diverse socioeconomic and cultural settings, merely reforming institutions to make participation more inclusive and democratic alone is not sufficient.
Book Synopsis Agricultural Service Responsiveness in Nepal by : Christopher Root
Download or read book Agricultural Service Responsiveness in Nepal written by Christopher Root and published by RTI Press. This book was released on 2014-01-23 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this pilot study, we examined the responsiveness of local government agricultural services in Nepal. In particular, we analyzed the equitability of agricultural service responsiveness with respect to farmers’ gender, ethnic grouping, land size, and commercialization. Responsiveness is defined as farmers receiving the services they view as top priorities. We surveyed 200 households, divided evenly between two districts. The survey asked farmers to identify their top priorities out of a list of services provided by local government. It also asked them to identify the services they had received. We measured responsiveness as the percentage of services farmers received that they ranked as a priority. We used regression to identify significant associations between farmers’ characteristics and the responsiveness of local government in providing those services. We found that agricultural service responsiveness across all services included in the study was 59 percent. We also found evidence of inequitable service responsiveness: regression shows that farmer membership in lower socioeconomic groups is associated with lower responsiveness of between 11 and 18 percentage points. Local government responsiveness can be improved by better understanding the differences between the priorities of different socioeconomic groups and by partnering with nongovernmental organizations that have mandates and resources to reach excluded socioeconomic groups.
