Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entrepreneurs are now internationalising, and many more are likely to internationalise in the future. Yet, most small firms expand in an opportunistic fashion, because entrepreneurs seldom have the time and resources to gather reliable data about opportunities in foreign countries. Leo-Paul Dana has conducted extensive international field research with a view to compiling key information on the business environment throughout Pacific Asia. Thus, the book is not just another “how to” guide. It reflects what is happening in an important region of our global economy. With this book, businessmen and business analysts, investors, academics and business students will gain invaluable insights into the conditions and opportunities for enterprise in these countries in this region. Book Synopsis The Economic Growth of Singapore by : W. G. Huff
Download or read book The Economic Growth of Singapore written by W. G. Huff and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-08-13 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the economic development of Singapore, easily the leading commercial and financial centre in Southeast Asia throughout the twentieth century. This development has been based on a strategic location at the crossroads of Asia, a free trade economy, and a dynamic entrepreneurial tradition. Initial twentieth-century economic success was linked to a group of legendary Chinese entrepreneurs, but by mid-century independent Singapore looked to multinational enterprise to deliver economic growth. Nonetheless exports of manufactures accounted for only part of Singaporean expansion, and by the 1980s Singapore was a major international financial centre and leading world exporter of commercial services. Throughout this study Dr Huff assesses the interaction of government policy and market forces, and places the transformation of the Singaporean economy in the context of both development theory and experience elsewhere in East Asia.

Book Synopsis Speaking Truth To Power: Singapore's Pioneer Public Servants by : Hoe Yeong Loke
Download or read book Speaking Truth To Power: Singapore's Pioneer Public Servants written by Hoe Yeong Loke and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2019-12-23 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is said that the duty of public servants is to 'speak truth to power' — to give honest, sound and sometimes unpopular advice to political leaders. Underneath the narrative of the Singapore story, as personified by Lee Kuan Yew and the first-generation leaders, lie the lesser-known tales of dedicated public servants in the nation-building process. Singapore's development cannot be fully understood without considering the role of those in public service during the transition to independence from the 1950s to 60s.Featuring oral history interviews from the National Archives of Singapore with 11 pioneer public servants, Speaking Truth to Power: Singapore's Pioneer Public Servants reveals first-hand, personal accounts of the civil service's transition from the colonial era, their relationship with the political leaders, and how Singapore's economic development was driven by sound public administration in those critical years. The annotated interviews make for an easily readable format for researchers and general audiences alike. Some of Singapore's pioneer public servants featured in the book include:Wee Chong Jin, The First Local Chief JusticeGoh Koh Pui, Chairman of the PSAAbdul Wahab Ghows, Solicitor-General and High Court JudgeHedwig Anuar, Director of the National LibraryKwa Soon Bee, Pioneer of Singapore's Healthcare SystemAlan Choe, HDB's First Architect-Planner, and Founder of the URAChan Chin Bock, Chairman of the EDBJ. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a wide range of expertise, this volume addresses fundamental issues surrounding industrialization in Southeast Asia, which are particularly pressing now that the region's miracle has been transformed into a debacle, and the world seeks to draw lessons from the experience. The contributors address crucial questions such as: How did Southeast Asia industrialize? What have been the consequences of domination by foreign investment? Did the region's resource wealth weaken its imperative to industrialize? Why else has Southeast Asia's industrialization been inferior to the rest of the East Asian region? Did the countries' financial systems help industrialization? Was this industrialization sustainable? The volume includes detailed studies of Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.

Book Synopsis From Traders to Innovators by : Goh Chor Boon
Download or read book From Traders to Innovators written by Goh Chor Boon and published by Flipside Digital Content Company Inc.. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, more than ever, the state of a country's science and technology is a critical factor for economic competitiveness and long-term growth. This book traces the development of science and technology policies and initiatives in Singapore since 1965. Developed as a trading entrepot by the British, science and technology were never strongly emphasized, right up to the 1970s. However, the need to stay ahead of economic competitiveness motivated the Singapore Government to initiate its national science and technology policy from the 1980s-moving Singapore from a low-skilled, low-technology economy to a high-skilled, high-technology one. Today, the drive for Singapore to become a hotbed for technological start-ups and R&D activities, supported by strong government funding and cutting-edge facilities, seems promising. Are the aspirations of nurturing a Silicon Valley-type culture in Singapore achievable? Are pragmatic, risk-averse Singaporeans ready for the mindset change? Can a nation of traders and service-brokers become a nation of technological innovators and entrepreneurs? This book attempts to provide the answers.
