Book excerpt: With its fittingly dramatic design, Courbet and the Modern Landscape accompanies the first major museum exhibition specifically to address Gustave Courbet's extraordinary achievement in landscape painting. Many of these carefully selected works produced from 1855 to 1876--gathered from Asia, Europe, and North America--will be new to readers. The catalogue--which accompanies an exhibition at the Getty Museum to be held from February 21 to May 14, 2006--highlights the artist's expressive responses to the natural environment. Essays by the curators examine Courbet's distinctly modern practice of landscape painting. Mary Morton's essay situates his landscapes in relation to his work in other genres, his critical reputation, and his role in establishing a new pictorial language for landscape painting. Charlotte Eyerman's essay investigates how later generations of nineteenth- and twentieth-century artists responded to Courbet's example. The catalogue also includes an essay by Dominique de Font-Reaulx, curator of photographs at the Musee d'Orsay, on the relationship between Courbet's work and landscape photography of the 1850s and 1860s. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Loan Exhibition of the Works of Gustave Courbet: New York, April 7 to May 18, 1919 Under these circumstances it is hard to understand the abuse that greeted Courbet's pictures when they appeared as a force about 1850. His history was no different from that of other painters Of original genius. There were a few in the middle of the hubbub who believed in him, and the number slowly increased until general recognition and official sanction came. But the time of triumph in his case was cut short by the politi cal events in which he had become enmeshed, leading to his decline and to his death in exile. Book excerpt: Issued in conjunction with the exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art of over 450 works of art from the legendary Havemeyer collection, formed at the turn of the century by pioneering American patrons of art Henry O. and Louisine Havemeyer, this lavishly illustrated catalogue combines 800 illustration (176 in color) with the collaborative efforts of 27 authors who examine the various aspects of the collection in summarizing essays and in entries on individual works. In addition, one essay is devoted to the Manhattan residence designed for the Havemeyers by Tiffany and Colman. An exhaustive 90-page chronology offers a perspective on the formation of the collection, outlining the roles of friend and advisor Mary Cassatt and a succession of dealers, and focusing on the history of the family and its business interests. 9.25x12.25" Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book excerpt: Some of the most iconic and influential images of nineteenth-century French painting, including Gustave Courbet's famous The Meeting ("Bonjour, Monsieur Courbet!"), highlight the celebrated Bruyas Collection from the Musée Fabre in Montpellier. With tastes ranging from romanticism to realism, Alfred Bruyas (1821-1877) collected both traditional and what was then avant-garde art. Featuring nine masterpieces by Courbet, as well as important painting, drawings, and sculptures by such leading artists of the period as Delacroix, Ingres, Géricault, Millet, Corot, Rousseau, and Barye, this book examines Bruyas's role as one of the foremost collectors of contemporary art in France, and the significance of his patronage of living artists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What sets this study apart from the vast literature on Monet is Gedo's focused, jargon-free, accessible, psychoanalytic assessment of Monet and his relationship with his first wife and mistress, Camille Doncieux, and the impact of this complex relationship on the artist's work. Using this psychobiographical approach in conducting a careful reading of primary source material and Monet's paintings, Gedo (independent scholar) does much to debunk a good deal of the mythology surrounding the artist's life at this period. She offers fresh insights into the content of many of Monet's major paintings, particularly his figurative works that feature Camille as a model or subject. So, for example, Gedo proposes that Monet's Camille (or The Woman in the Green Dress) from 1866, via its composition, "functioned as a metaphor for the uncertainty characterizing the relationship between lovers," in addition to exposing publicly Camille as Monet's mistress. As is the danger when applying psychoanalysis to the study of art history, some of Gedo's assertions and interpretations approach the level of implausibility; however, these flights of psychoanalytic fancy are few and far between. The writing is engaging, endnotes are extensive but not oppressive, and the book is sufficiently illustrated with many images in color. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above; general readers. General Readers; Lower-division Undergraduates; Upper-division Undergraduates; Graduate Students; Researchers/Faculty; Professionals/Practitioners. Reviewed by D. E. Gliem.

Looking back over the past one hundred years, the contributors to this in-depth survey consider the diverse range of artists who have been influenced by the region's compelling union of water and land, peaks and valleys, and fog and sunlight. Paintings, sculpture, graphic arts, photography, landscape architecture, earthworks, conceptual art, and designs in city planning and architecture are all represented. The diversity reflects not just the glories of nature but also an exploration of what constitutes "landscape" in its broadest, most complete sense. Among the more than two hundred works of art are those by well-known artists and designers such as Bernard Maybeck, Diego Rivera, Dorothea Lange, Ansel Adams, Richard Diebenkorn, Joan Brown, Lawrence Halprin, and Christo. Lesser-known artists are here as well, resulting in an exceptional array of approaches to the natural environment. The essays also explore key themes in the Bay Area's landscape art tradition, including the ethnic perspectives that have played an essential role in the region's art. The inexhaustible ability of the land to stimulate different personal meanings is made clear in this volume, and the effect yields a deeper understanding of how art can shape our lives in ways both spiritual and practical, how the landscape without constantly merges with the landscape within.
