Book excerpt: The use of horizontally curved composite bridges in the interchange facilities of modern highway systems has become increasingly popular for economic as well as for aesthetic considerations. Cellular steel sections composite with a concrete deck are quite suitable in resisting torsional and warping effects induced by highway curvature. However, this type of structure has inherently created design problems for the designer in estimating the level of dynamic response when subjected to moving vehicles, wind, or seismic conditions. This paper presents a summary of an estensive parametric study, using the finite-element method, in which 120 simply supported, curved composite bridge prototypes are analyzed to evaluate their natural frequencies and mode shapes. The parameters considered in the study are end-diaphragm thickness, cross-bracing system, aspect ratio, span-to-depth ratio, degree of curvature, number of lanes, and number of cells. Results from tests on four 1/12 linear-scale simply supported composite three-cell bridge models of different curvatures are used to substantiate the analytical modelling. The stipulation made in bridge codes for treating a curved bridge as a straight one is examined. Based on the data generated from the parametric study, expressions for the first flexural frequency and hence the dynamic load allowance are deduced. Recommendations for enhancing the torsional resistance to dynamic forces on curved bridges are presented. Two design examples are illustrated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following on from the International Conference on Structural Engineering, Mechanics and Computation, held in Cape Town in April 2001, this book contains the Proceedings, in two volumes. There are over 170 papers written by Authors from around 40 countries worldwide. The contributions include 6 Keynote Papers and 12 Special Invited Papers. In line with the aims of the SEMC 2001 International Conference, and as may be seen from the List of Contents, the papers cover a wide range of topics under a variety of themes. There is a healthy balance between papers of a theoretical nature, concerned with various aspects of structural mechanics and computational issues, and those of a more practical nature, addressing issues of design, safety and construction. As the contributions in these Proceedings show, new and more efficient methods of structural analysis and numerical computation are being explored all the time, while exciting structural materials such as glass have recently come onto the scene. Research interest in the repair and rehabilitation of existing infrastructure continues to grow, particularly in Europe and North America, while the challenges to protect human life and property against the effects of fire, earthquakes and other hazards are being addressed through the development of more appropriate design methods for buildings, bridges and other engineering structures.

Book excerpt: The use of cellular-shaped cross sections for highway bridges, especially on curved alignments, is an economical solution because of the high flexural and torsional strength of such sections. This paper summarizes the dynamic characteristics of curved composite multi-cell (contiguous boxes) bridges, continuous over two and three spans. An extensive parametric study, using the finite-element method, was conducted to evaluate the key parameters that may affect the natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes for this type of bridge. These parameters are end-diaphragm thickness, number of cross-bracings, aspect ratio, span-to-depth ratio, degree of curvature, number of cells, and span-to-span ratio. The effect of cracking of the concrete deck slab in the vicinity of interior supports is also investigated, Results obtained from tests on 1/12 scale two-span continuous curved composite three-cell bridge model are used to substantiate the analytical modelling. Based on the date generated from the parametric study, empirical formulas for the dominant frequency are deduced. An illustrated design example is presented. A study is also conducted to determine the dynamic deflections caused by a moving truck over the bridge with a view to improve human discomfort and perception to vibration.

Book excerpt: In the present research, load distribution factors of steel-concrete composite bridges subjected to loads recommended by Australian Bridge Design Code are determined. The bridges can have straight or curved (in plan) alignments with box girder or I girder sectional configurations. The load distribution factors are quite useful in bridge design practice specifically at their preliminary design stage. These factors help a designer to quickly calculate the stress resultants (shear force or bending moment) acting on different girders of a bridge from those acting on the entire bridge section which can be estimated easily in the case of a statically determinant structure such as simply supported straight bridge treated as a beam. Unfortunately, the horizontally curved bridges are statically indeterminate even if they are idealized as a curved beam. In order to address this issue, a closed form analytical solution without having any major simplification is developed which can be conveniently used by a designer for calculating the stress resultants acting on the entire section of a curved bridge. The unit load method, a method extracted from Castigliano's second theorem, is used to derive the analytical solution. As bridge loads consist of a number of wheel loads, the use of influence line diagrams is quite common as they help to calculate the maximum values of any parameter such as bending moment conveniently. For this purpose, the analytical solution is used to obtain the influence line diagram of shear force, bending moment and torsion of curved bridges. A detailed finite element modelling of these bridge structures is used to calculate the load distribution factors. In order to have a reliable finite element model of these structural system, different types of element such as solid element, shell element and beam element are used in different combinations to find out the most suitable option that can accurately simulate the components of these bridge systems with reasonable computational efficiency. The performance of these finite element models is assessed using experimental results available in literature. These bridges can be characterized with different parameters and these parameters can vary in a wide range in real scenario. Thus there is a need for development of design formulae or charts for load distribution factors in terms of these parameters that can be readily used for designing any bridge. For this purpose, a large number of configurations of these bridges are generated by varying their different parameters and these bridges are analysed using the abovementioned finite element model. A large number of results obtained from these analyses are used to develop the design guidelines in the form of empirical expressions using multivariate regression analysis.
