Book excerpt: This new kind of OB product,Organizational Behavior: Real Solutions to Real Challenges, came from our increasing recognition of the challenges faced by former students working in contemporary organizations today. Those graduates tell us that they are ultimately challenged most by the “people problems” in their work. So, we wanted our current students to understand that reality and to exposure them to the best current evidence and thinking about how informed people attack those challenges. Our charge was to create a product that focused on real solutions to real challenges in the real world. We have drawn on many sources including the Management & Organizational Behavior Teaching Society (MOBTS) and the Teaching and Learning Conference (TLC) of the Academy of Management.

Book excerpt: This text uses realistic case examples, discussion questions, and self-tests to illustrate principles of workplace psychology. Each chapter begins by posing a difficult work situation, which may be a conflict, a motivation problem, or an issue of diversity, then goes on to discuss principles and theories that apply to the case, covering areas of ethics, problem employees, and organizational culture, as well as neglected areas such as the physical atmosphere of the workplace, the effects of new technologies on workers, and workplace gossip. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a strong movement today in management to encourage management practices based on research evidence. In the first volume of this handbook, I asked experts in 39 areas of management to identify a central principle that summarized and integrated the core findings from their specialty area and then to explain this principle and give real business examples of the principle in action. I asked them to write in non-technical terms, e.g., without a lot of statistics, and almost all did so. The previous handbook proved to be quite popular, so I was asked to edit a second edition. This new edition has been expanded to 33 topics, and there are some new authors for the previously included topics. The new edition also includes: updated case examples, updated references and practical exercises at the end of each chapter. It also includes a preface on evidence-based management. The principles for the first edition were intended to be relatively timeless, so it is no surprise that most of the principles are the same (though some chapter titles include more than one principle). This book could serve as a textbook in advanced undergraduate and in MBA courses. It could also be of use to practicing managers and not just those in Human Resource departments. Every practicing manager may not want to read the whole book, but I am willing to guarantee that every one will find at least one or more chapters that will be practically useful. In this time of economic crisis, the need for effective management practices is more acute than ever.

Book excerpt: This revision of ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR includes a renewed emphasis on the text's multifaceted approach, which is reflected in a new subtitle: SCIENCE, THE REAL WORLD, AND YOU. "Science" refers to roots of the discipline and the way the book is anchored in research tradition--both classic research as well as leading-edge scholarship. "The Real World" reflects current trends in organizations and takes shape as examples from all types of organizations. "You" reflects the opportunities to grow and develop both as individuals and organizations. The book helps students learn not only the concepts and theories that enhance the management of human behavior at work, but also how to practice these skills. A wealth of proven features, cases, exercises, and examples--including six new focus companies--stimulate interest and discussion; demonstrate how theories and research apply; and prompt cognitive and skill-based learning. Established organizational behavior topics are discussed, including motivation, leadership, teamwork, and communication, as are emerging issues shaping the field. The exciting theme of change clearly demonstrates how attitudes and behaviors within an organization are affected by change and the new opportunities and experiences change presents. Supporting themes focus on globalization, diversity, and ethics.

Book excerpt: A less-expensive grayscale paperback version is available. Search for ISBN 9781680922875. The field of management and organizational behavior exists today in a constant state of evolution and change. Casual readers of publications like the New York Times, The Economist and the Wall Street Journal will learn about the dynamic nature of organizations in today's ever-changing business environment. Organizational Behavior is designed to meet the scope and sequence requirements of the introductory course on Organizational Behavior. This is a traditional approach to organizational behavior. The table of contents of this book was designed to address two main themes. What are the variables that affect how, when, where, and why managers perform their jobs? What theories and techniques are used by successful managers at a variety of organizational levels to achieve and exceed objectives effectively and efficiently throughout their careers? Management is a broad business discipline, and the Organizational Behavior course covers many areas such as individual and group behavior at work, as well as organizational processes such as communication in the workplace and managing conflict and negotiation. No one individual can be an expert in all areas of management, so an additional benefit of this text is that specialists in a variety of areas have authored individual chapters. Finally, we all made an effort to present a balanced approach to gender and diversity throughout the text in the examples used, the photographs selected, and the use of both male and female in alternating chapters when referring to generic managers or employees.

Book excerpt: Organizational Behavior: For a Better Tomorrow, 2nd Edition is a unique, blended approach to the subject, combining traditional core competencies with contemporary research and innovative practices. The textbook’s distinctive dual presentation integrates “conventional” and “sustainable” organizational behavior (OB) to help students understand how creativity, collaboration, and ethical decision-making can positively impact people, organizations, and entire communities. This fully-updated second edition provides a balanced, real-world approach that strengthens critical thinking skills, enables students to explore the rationale for sustainable OB practices, and illustrates and how values and ethics influence business decisions in the real world. Rather than focusing only on the short-term, bottom-line approach of traditional OB, the text discusses a comprehensive range of topics, from current trends in popular media and scholarly literature, to addressing the current and long-term needs and goals of organizational stakeholders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This twenty-sixth volume of Research in Organizational Behavior presents a set of well-crafted and thoughtful essays on a series of research topics. They range from efforts to redirect the study of leadership, to analyses of interpersonal relationships, to considerations of cross-cultural issues in organizing work, to discussions of institutional and environmental forces on organizational outcomes. Each of these essays includes a thorough review of the relevant literature, and more importantly, pushes that literature forward with new conceptual analysis and theory. In short, these essays continue the spirit of "rigorous eclecticism" that has exemplified the annual publication of ROB. As a collection, this year's set of essays provides a healthy advance for the field of organizational behavior. They are examples of serious scholarship that extend and challenge our current thinking about organizations and the behavior of its participants. Many of these chapters will take their place among the best presented by the Research in Organizational Behavior series. • Revisiting the Meaning of Leadership • When and How Team Leaders Matter • Normal Act of Irrational Trust: Motivated Attributions and the Trust Development Process • Gender Stereotypes and Negotiation Performance: An Examination of Theory and Research • Third-Party Reactions to Employee (Mis)treatment: A Justice Perspective • Subgroup Dynamics in Internationally Distributed Teams: Ethnocentrism or Cross-National Learning? • Protestant Relational Ideology: The Cognitive Underpinnings and Organizational Implications of an American Anomaly • Isomorphism In Reverse: Institutional Theory as an Explanation For Recent Increases in Intraindustry Heterogeneity and Managerial Discretion • The Red Queen: History-Dependent Competition Among Organizations

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exciting new introductory text offers a new perspective on teaching organizational behavior by framing the organization as the vehicle for implementing strategic management processes, while also breaking down how the different components of an organization are designed to work together. Unlike traditional OB texts, Organizational Behavior Today emphasizes a "big picture" examination of how organizations function in a Darwinian world, in which the primary goal of an organization is survival. The book introduces readers to the three stages of the strategic management process: strategy formulation, strategy implementation and strategic control, thereby linking the organization to its mission, vision and strategic goals. Essential OB concepts such as work processes, policy, worker behavior, reward system, change management and leadership development are covered, and the book also highlights the impact of technology on organizations. To support student comprehension and bring the study of OB to life, the book includes vignettes highlighting real organizations who have implemented OB processes, either successfully or unsuccessfully. End-of-chapter questions ensure that students can apply the information learned effectively. Accompanying online resources for this text, available at www.routledge.com/9780367695095, include a curated list of relevant video content. The book is suitable for undergraduates and graduate students completing a first course in Organizational Behavior, as well as a practical reference for current managers wishing to optimize organizational performance.

Download or read book Organizational Behavior written by Robert Kreitner and published by McGraw-Hill College. This book was released on 2007 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organizational Behavior, Seventh Edition continues in its tradition of being up-to-date, relevant and user-driven. Kreitner and Kinicki’s approach to organizational behavior is based on the authors’ belief that reading a comprehensive textbook is hard work, but that the process should be interesting (and sometimes fun). Thus, they consistently attempt to find a way to make complex ideas understandable through explanations, contemporary examples, and/or learning exercises. With every edition, the authors make every effort to respond to user feedback and ensure the text covers the very latest OB research and practices. The seventh edition of Organizational Behavior again uses the familiar wolf image on its cover. This remains a central theme because Kreitner and Kinicki see wolves as an instructive and inspiring metaphor for modern Organizational Behavior. Wolves are dedicated team players, great communicators, and adaptable. These are key success attributes in today’s workplace. Organizational Behavior uses these fundamentals to explore and explain the forces behind conventional corporate behavior and organizational theory.
