They are ectotherms, which means they can?t make their own heat. That?s why you see many types of lizards basking in the sun, seemingly doing nothing at all. That?s the life. But make no mistake, lizards have very busy lives?looking for food and avoiding being food. Popular science writer Sneed B. Collard III gets down and dirty with all kinds of lizards?from your average "Joe Lizard," the western fence lizard, to the impressively large Komodo dragon. In a kid-friendly narrative, Sneed explores many different kinds of lizards, their habitats, defense systems, hunting techniques, and mating rituals. He reveals the exciting life of a lizard?from rappelling from the tops of trees to the forest floor, to dropping off a tail to get away from a predator.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the narratives of a group of four-year-old children in a composition project in an Australian early learning centre. The participants, centre staff and a composer, Stephen Leek, contributed a number of music sessions for the children, including five original songs. The book showcases young children’s communicative ability and sensitivity to wider issues. The staff in the centre have a strongly voiced philosophy that is enacted through arts-based pedagogy and incorporates significant themes including a respect for Aboriginal culture and custodial responsibility towards a sustainable future for the earth. Examples of adult and children’s ideas are illustrated through music making, singing, dancing, words, drawings and paintings, which provide insights into a world where children are viewed as active citizens and the arts have rights. The book describes the context of the centre, the history of projects and details one project as an example of “lifeworthy learning”.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kids and GrampaT Here are 14 of the many stories written about The Kids and GrampaT by Jean Thibault Castagno, a relative to some and a friend to others. The settings are real and imaginary as are many of the events that unfold as one reads deeper into the tales of adventure. The author has always had a vivid imagination and a curious mind. These attributes, together with her desire to please others and to encourage their reading skills, combine nicely in tales of children and grownups playing and interacting together. Castagno also writes stories for adults that are meant to be inspiring and hope fulfilling. Castagno was raised on a farm in Coventry CT during World War II. Her series of stories about those years can be found on the Coventry CT website. She was the oldest of five children. Their mother worked very hard as can be expected when the father spends 12 hours a day at a war-related factory job 40 miles distant. The children were expected to help daily in tending to the animals, the gardens, and, every Fall, in harvesting the several acres of potatoes for sale to neighbors, friends and the local food stores. Castagno attended one room schools until 1943 when she and her 11 classmates transferred to either Manchester or Windham High Schools. Castagno has worked at many jobs: retail, insurance, and medical. On her fiftieth birthday in 1980, she decided to attend the nearby community college. She elected to study English because she thought she knew it, and Spanish because she didn’t. This led to a six year program of part-time studies and several honors degrees. She completed her courses in 1986 and taught at Oxford Academy, a private preparatory school for boys in Westbrook CT, until her retirement.

Book excerpt: We don’t think of imagination the way that we should. The word is often only associated with children, artists and daydreamers, but in reality, imagination is an integral part of almost every action and decision that we make. Simply put, imagination is a person’s ability to create scenarios in his or her head: this can include everything from planning a grocery list, to honing a golf swing, to having religious hallucinations. And while imagination has positive connotations, it can also lead to decreased productivity and cooperation, or worse, the continuous reliving of past trauma. The human brain is remarkable in its ability to imagine—it can imagine complex possible futures, fantasy worlds, or tasty meals. We can use our imaginations to make us relaxed or anxious. We can imagine what the world might be, and construct elaborate plans. People have been fascinated with the machination of the human brain and its ability to imagine for centuries. There are books on creativity, dreams, memory, and the mind in general, but how exactly do we create those scenes in our head? With chapters ranging from hallucination and imaginary friends to how imagination can make you happier and more productive, Jim Davies' Imagination will help us explore the full potential of our own mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A monumental career retrospective "This vibrant collection brings together World Fantasy Award winner Goss's exquisite interpretations of and variations on familiar folk and fairy tales. The [poems and stories] span the length of Goss's career ... All approach well-known stories from unexpected angles and with deep empathy for the characters ... The abundance of pieces sometimes has the effect of a musical fugue: common motifs, places, and characters echo through the works, with each reappearance adding something fresh." —Publishers Weekly A wicked stepsister frets over all the ways in which she failed to receive her mother's love. A lost woman travels through an enchanted forest looking for someone who can remind her of her name. A girl must wear down seven pairs of shoes to gain help from a witch. A fox makes a life with a human, but neither can deny their true natures. A young woman returns to her childhood home and the fantastic stories she left there. A man lets himself be taken prisoner by the Snow Queen to prove that the woman who loves him would walk barefoot through the ice to save him. Medusa cuts her hair for love. The Collected Enchantments gathers retellings of folk and fairy tales in prose and verse from World Fantasy and Locus award-winning author Theodora Goss, creator of The Extraordinary Adventures of the Athena Club series. Drawing from her Mythopoeic Award-nominated collections In the Forest of Forgetting and Songs for Ophelia and her Mythopoeic Award-winning tome Snow White Learns Witchcraft, and adding new and uncollected stories and poems, The Collected Enchantments provides a resounding demonstration of how, as Hugo and Nebula award winner Jo Walton writes, Goss provides "a vivid, authentic and important voice" that, in the words of Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association Grand Master Jane Yolen, "transposes, transforms, and transcends times, eras, and old tales with ease." PRAISE FOR THEODORA GOSS "In the tradition of great modern fantasists like Angela Carter and Marina Warner, Theodora Goss's sublime tales are modern classics-beautiful, sly, sensual and deeply moving . . . I envy any reader encountering Goss's work for the first time." —Elizabeth Hand, winner of the Mythopoeic, Nebula, Shirley Jackson and World Fantasy awards "The elegance of Goss's work has never ceased to amaze me. It feels effortless, but endlessly evocative and suggestive, flowing with the rhythms of both the natural world and the intimate socio-familial cosmos. Goss's language fits together like gems in a complex crown, a diadem of images and motifs, resting gently on the head, but with a deceptive weight." —Catherynne M. Valente, winner of the Mythopoeic, Locus, Hugo, Otherwise and Theodore Sturgeon awards "Theodora Goss re-fleshes and re-clothes old tales in multifarious ways. Through prose and poetry, Goss shines her unique light into the fairytale forest-and many bright eyes gleam back." —Margo Lanagan, Aurealis, Ditmar and World Fantasy award winner With cover art by Catrin Welz-Stein and interior black and white illustrations by Paula Arwen Owen.
