Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Counsel for Christian Workers" is a heart-warming call for Christians to take their main duty seriously - that is the call to enlarge God's Kingdom on earth, and to do this with energy, enthusiasm, earnestness, zeal, and knowledge. As with other books by Charles Haddon Spurgeon, the Prince of Preachers, this one is not for the faint-hearted, but for those who are devoted totally to their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To those who are saying something like "How I would like to be one of these!", Spurgeon replies with a clear "Well, you don't need a large congregation, because there is a pulpit in every street in London." But Spurgeon's starting point is his readers' own salvation. He quotes, "Knowing the terrors of the Lord we persuade men", then adding "what loss would it be to you, if you did lose all the world, and gained your soul?" and then "it is the best and most convenient that each householder should sweep before his own door". This book has been originally published in 1896. This edition has been edited for modern readers, typeset for eBook readers, and proofread. About the author: Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was born in Kelvedon, Essex, England. He converted to Christianity in 1850 at a small Methodist chapel, and shortly after that he began his own ministry of preaching and teaching, and preached more than 500 sermons by the age of 20. During his ministry, he preached to more than 10 million people, wrote tens of books, and published his sermons in over 25,000 copies on a weekly basis. Charles Spurgeon suffered from poor health and he died on January 31, 1892, and was buried in London.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A peasant family, driven by the drought, walks to exhaustion through an arid land. As they shelter at a deserted ranch, the drought is broken and they linger, tending cattle for the absentee ranch owner, until the onset of another drought forces them to move on, homeless wanderers again. Yet, like the desert plants that defeat all rigors of wind and weather, the family maintains its will to survive in the harsh and solitary land. Intimately acquainted with the region of which he writes and keenly appreciative of the character of its inhabitants, into whose minds he has penetrated as few before him, Graciliano Ramos depicts them in a style whose austerity well becomes the spareness of the subject, creating a gallery of figures that rank as classic in contemporary Brazilian literature.

Book excerpt: João do Rio (1881-1921) was a literary journalist before his time, before the term existed, before anyone saw that journalism could be raised to the level of art by infusing it with intellecual insight and sociological analysis. He went wherever necessary to observe life as Rio de Janeiro struggled to enter the 20th century while clinging to its traditional imperial politics and lifestyle. He flaunted his homosexuality a century before it became socially acceptable. Here, for the first time in English, are João do Rio's reports on the bizarre confluence of European, North American, and African religions that found adherents in Rio de Janeiro. Candomblé, Spiritism, Positivism, Satanism, Judaism, the Cult of the Sea, the New Jerusalem, the Physiolaters, the Priestesses, the Evangelicals...they all fell under his scrutiny. Ana Lessa-Schmidt's translation of As Religiões no Rio, brilliant and true to the original, brings João do Rio's insight and revelations to full light. Just as João do Rio took readers down the dark streets of the low-life and into dark houses of worship, Lessa-Schmidt's translation takes readers into one of the world's most glorious and mysterious cities during its post-imperial heyday at the turn of the 20th century. This bilingual edition is in Portuguese and English.
