Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A “wonderful memoir” (Los Angeles Times) about a brilliantly unconventional physician and writer, a man who has illuminated the many ways that the brain makes us human. • “Intimate.... Brim[s] with life and affection.” —The New York Times When Oliver Sacks was twelve years old, a perceptive schoolmaster wrote: “Sacks will go far, if he does not go too far.” It is now abundantly clear that Sacks has never stopped going. With unbridled honesty and humor, Sacks writes about the passions that have driven his life—from motorcycles and weight lifting to neurology and poetry. He writes about his love affairs, both romantic and intellectual; his guilt over leaving his family to come to America; his bond with his schizophrenic brother; and the writers and scientists—W. H. Auden, Gerald M. Edelman, Francis Crick—who have influenced his work.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive, upbeat guide to help you survive the moving process from start to finish, filled with fresh strategies and checklists for timing and supplies, choosing which items to toss and which to keep, determining the best place to live, saying farewell and looking forward to hello. Moving is a major life change—time consuming, expensive, often overwhelming, and sometimes scary. But it doesn’t have to be! Instead of looking at it as a burdensome chore, consider it a new adventure. Ali Wenzke and her husband moved ten times in eleven years, living in seven states across the U.S. She created her popular blog, The Art of Happy Moving, to help others build a happier life before, during, and after a move. Infused with her infectious optimistic spirit, The Art of Happy Moving builds on her blog, offering step-by-step guidance, much-needed comfort, practical information, and welcome advice on every step of the process, including: How to stage your home for prospective buyers How to choose your next neighborhood How to discard your belongings and organize your packing How to say goodbye to your friends How to make the transition easier for your kids How to decorate your new home How to build a new community And so much more. Ali shares invaluable personal anecdotes from her many moves, and packs each chapter with a wealth of information and ingenious tips (Did you know that if you have an extra-large welcome mat at the entrance of your home, it’s more likely to sell?). Ali also includes checklists for packing and staging, and agendas for the big moving day. Whether you’re a relocating professional, newly married, a family with kids and pets, or a retiree looking to downsize, The Art of Happy Moving will help you discover ways to help make your transition an easier one—and be even happier than you were before.

Book excerpt: Packed with research, insights, and illuminating (and often funny) examples from Paris’s own divorce experience, this book is a “practical and reassuring guide to parting well.” —Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project Engaging and revolutionary, filled with wit, searing honesty, and intimate interviews, Splitopia is a call for a saner, more civil kind of divorce. As Paris reveals, divorce has improved dramatically in recent decades due to changes in laws and family structures, advances in psychology and child development, and a new understanding of the importance of the father. Positive psychology expert and author of Happier, Tal Ben-Shahar, writes that Paris’s “personal insights, stories, and research” create “a smart and interesting guide that can be extremely helpful for those going through divorce.” Reading this book can be the difference between an expensive, ugly battle and a decent divorce, between children sucked under by conflict or happy, healthy kids. This is “a compelling case that it’s high time for a new definition of Happily Ever After—for everyone” (Brigid Schulte, author of Overwhelmed: Work, Love, and Play When No One Has the Time).

A study published by The University of Florida showed that most of the people who relocate or retire to Florida from another U.S. state, will end up moving out! Be more confident than ever you're making the right decisions! A popular saying by Florida promoters is that over a 1000 people a day move there. What you won't hear them say is that over a 1000 people a day pack up and move out of the Sunshine State every day too That's supposed to be a secret. The author of this book has sold hundreds of homes for people that wanted to move out of the state. He noticed that most sellers had very similar complaints about living there and the reasons why they had to get out. They also explained how disruptive and expensive moving there and moving out was but they disliked Florida so much they just had to do it. Of course this doesn't happen to everyone. There are many that love it and stay long term. That is covered in the book too because many of them have the same things in common that you should also know about. The book explains both the positives and negatives of becoming a Florida Resident. It also offers many practical tips and explains the different Florida Lifestyle options. Should you move to a home or condo? Pool or not? Learn helpful information on buying a home or condo in Florida and how to avoid making expensive but common new resident mistakes. Will moving to Florida be the best move of your life or an expensive disaster? Find out before you commit to a life altering move.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too often, books on health and wellness are too long and cumbersome to motivate the reader. Thick books weighed down with technical jargon can be overwhelming for the average person. This book remedies that by focusing on four pillars of health: eating cleaner, sleeping better, moving more, and calming your mind. With brief sections, a conversational style, and anecdotal stories, the authors have drafted a book that can not only inform the average reader, but inspire us all to take the first steps toward living our best life. Endorsement: I love this book! If you asked me to take decades of experience working at the bleeding edge of human athletic performance and boil it to the most essential behaviors for long term, sustainable success, it would be this book! The trick to unlocking our incredibly robust and antifragile natures is to appreciate the way that the keystone behaviors in this book integrate into a cogent whole. Performing these "basics" well for the rest of your life will never get old or go out of style. The principles within these pages are the fundamentals of being a truly savage human. -Dr. Kelly Starrett, DPT, Coach, Physio, Co-Founder of The Ready State 2x NYT Best Selling Author. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do Mexicans migrate to the United States? Is there a typical Mexican migrant? Beginning in the 1970s, survey data indicated that the average migrant was a young, unmarried man who was poor, undereducated, and in search of better employment opportunities. This is the general view that most Americans still hold of immigrants from Mexico. On the Move argues that not only does this view of Mexican migrants reinforce the stereotype of their undesirability, but it also fails to capture the true diversity of migrants from Mexico and their evolving migration patterns over time. Using survey data from over 145,000 Mexicans and in-depth interviews with nearly 140 Mexicans, Filiz Garip reveals a more accurate picture of Mexico-U.S migration. In the last fifty years there have been four primary waves: a male-dominated migration from rural areas in the 1960s and '70s, a second migration of young men from socioeconomically more well-off families during the 1980s, a migration of women joining spouses already in the United States in the late 1980s and ’90s, and a generation of more educated, urban migrants in the late 1990s and early 2000s. For each of these four stages, Garip examines the changing variety of reasons for why people migrate and migrants’ perceptions of their opportunities in Mexico and the United States. Looking at Mexico-U.S. migration during the last half century, On the Move uncovers the vast mechanisms underlying the flow of people moving between nations.
