Book excerpt: Excerpt from Living and Forest Lands Living in lowlands produces habits and customs different from those prevailing in highlands. So also, people living in or near forests develop certain characteristic activities not evident among inhabitants of treeless plains. Even distant forests exert an influence by supplying raw materials, protecting the sources of water supply, and in other indirect ways. Men killed off the buffalo and then the passenger pigeon, cut over the forest and let the sunlight in to dry up the swamp, plowed the new ground and called it prog ress. Then somebody missed the wind whispering through the pine trees and stopped to wonder. Crops failed, springs dried up, gullies scarred the hillsides and the rivers ran muddy red. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land We Live In: The Book of Conservation It is peculiarly appropriate that Mr. Price should have written this book. His experience has been exactly what he needed to fit him for the task. Mr. Price is a forester, and was for many years my right hand in the Forest Service. Indeed, if credit could be al lotted justly for work done, I believe it would be found that he had more to do with the success of the Service than I had. In addition to his intimate knowledge of the whole country acquired in the Forest Service, Mr. Price has been associated with the Conservation movement from its very beginning. It was with him that I discussed it first after the idea had occurred to me, and from that time to this little has happened in Conservation which has not profited by his wide knowledge, remarkable powers of organization, and unusual executive ability. As a member of the National Conservation Commission, Secretary of its Section of For ests, and once more the right hand of its Chairman, and as vice-president of the National Conservation Association, he has had and has used to the full an unrivaled opportunity to apply the foresight and training he acquired in Forestry to all phases of Conservation. His scientific accuracy is the guarantee for the accuracy of this book. Personally, Mr. Price is so warm a friend of mine that what he says about me in his book must be taken with many grains of salt. He is strongly prejudiced in my favor. I hope this admirable book may have what it deserves; the widest circulation among the young people of America. All the boys and girls who read it while they are young will be more useful to the Nation because of it when they grow up: and unless I am mistaken, they will thoroughly enjoy reading it besides. The rocky outcroppings grew larger, and more numerous too, and rising high and higher they at last formed two fortresses that stood one on either side of the stream. Yet they leaned so close together that they squeezed the river into a perfect fury. Between the upper end of a rocky island and the mainland on our right a big tree hung horizontally. Beneath the tree glided a gleaming, squirming lane of water that reminded me of a gigantic snake racing into its hole. Suddenly the canoe turned to the right, and into that hole we swept with a rush. A moment later everyone ducked his head as we glided under the hanging tree. The canoe now began swerving this way and that - like a ship without a rudder. Hill looked back with anger. I, too, glanced behind. It wasn't What I saw, but What I didn't see that startled me. Our steersman had dis appeared. Instantly Hill bellowed something in Indian. Quick as a flash an old man grabbed the spare steering paddle and worked with might and main. Now down a steeper slope we flew like an express train through a canyon. Trees and rocks went flying by. Spray hit us like buckshot. Perpendicular walls of rock on either side made landing impossible. Ragged boulders appeared above the foam and threatened to sink us. Suddenly we struck a submerged rock that bellied up the bottom of our canoe, cracked her ribs, and ripped her Open. Now We were sinking. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The School Book of Forestry Our forests, with their billions of trees, are the backbone of agriculture, the skeleton of lum bering, and the heart of industry. Even now, in spite of their depletion, they are the cream of our natural resources. They furnish wood for the nation, pasture for thousands of cattle and sheep, and water supply for countless cities and farms. They are the dominions of wildlife. Millions of birds, game animals, and fish live in the forests and the forest streams. The time is coming when our forests will be the greatest playgrounds of America. It is necessary that we preserve, protect, and expandour timber lands. By so doing we shall provide for the needs of future generations. It may be necessary to have adjustments in the man-land ratio, as well as adjustments in the methods of forest production and land use, if levels of income are to be acceptable. In order to raise the low level of living in forest areas Where mining and other industries are not developed, Without continuous public subsidies, there are two, or a combination of two, alternatives: (1) to develop forest operations of a type that Will provide full employment for the people; and (2) to fit the people for and to provide alternative employment opportunities in this and other areas in order to relieve the subsistence pressure on land resources. His position this year is extremely favorable as compared with his neighbors, who lost heavily by relying on tobacco for their cash crop. Mr. A is the average farmer, blessed with more than average ambition, but who has demonstrated that forest lands will produce a good living if ordinary industry is used. Certainly a more steady income is enjoyed by Mr. A than his neighbors can expect. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Technical Publication No; 15 of the New York State College of Forestry, Vol. 21: At Syracuse University To exercise sane sufirage the public must be educated as to the natural resources of the state. We must know more of the kinds of trees which make up its forests, the game which inhabits them, the fish which live in the forest streams. Succeeding generations will criticize or commend us as we employ unwise or remedial measures. A wise forest policy presupposes two things, an exten sive campaign of reforestation on idle forest lands within the state, and a close utilization of such forest resources, chiefly tim ber, as still remain. Closer utilization of wood requires a more specific knowledge of tree species and the information given in the following pages is an endeavor to meet this demand. In writing this bulletin no contention is made that the field is a new one. The information given herein is included in the larger and more comprehensive tree manuals covering the trees of North America or, more specifically, those of the north eastern states. Unfortunately, however, many of the manuals are inaccessible to the general public because of the cost while others are of such a technical nature as to render their contents difficult of interpretation by the reading public. Moreover, such generalities often occur as to cause the reader some doubt as to what to apply to New York State. The present bulletin, covering the trees of the state only, omits much extraneous matter which would otherwise confuse. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Land Use and Streamflow in Central Oregon The prosperity of the West greatly depends on adequacy of water supplies. Though much water use is at considerable distance from the forest, forest lands are intimately related to western irrigation in that they are the origin of perhaps 85 percent of the water. In central Oregon, water will probably fix the upper limits of population and living standards. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The forest has closed over the life that we used to know along the Siletz, and our friends have all packed out. But from the Atlantic to the Pacific the Land Claimers scattered for ever - remember the days when the pack trains made the trail from the Agency to Otter Rock, when the settler's ax echoed down the canyons. Now the forest ranger, from the high ridges, looks down on deserted cabins and shrinking clearings, and knows each place by its old name, but does not know, nor care, where the settler has gone. So I have brought some of us back, once more, in this book, to live over again for a little the life we knew along the Siletz River.
