Book Synopsis The Book of My Life by : Girolamo Cardano
Download or read book The Book of My Life written by Girolamo Cardano and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2002-10-31 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bright star of the Italian Renaissance, Girolamo Cardano was an internationally-sought-after astrologer, physician, and natural philosopher, a creator of modern algebra, and the inventor of the universal joint. Condemned by the Inquisition to house arrest in his old age, Cardano wrote The Book of My Life, an unvarnished and often outrageous account of his character and conduct. Whether discussing his sex life or his diet, the plots of academic rivals or meetings with supernatural beings, or his deep sorrow when his beloved son was executed for murder, Cardano displays the same unbounded curiosity that made him a scientific pioneer. At once picaresque adventure and campus comedy, curriculum vitae, and last will, The Book of My Life is an extraordinary Renaissance self-portrait—a book to set beside Montaigne's Essays and Benvenuto Cellini's Autobiography.

Book Synopsis The Life of William Wordsworth, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) by : William Knight
Download or read book The Life of William Wordsworth, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) written by William Knight and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of William Wordsworth, Vol. 1 No reader of this Life of Wordsworth can regret, so much as the author does, -the long delay that has md in its publication. Although the? First of the three volumes hasbeenprinted for more thanayear, the issue of the work has been postponed from causes too numerous to mention. When the edition of the Works of Wordsworth - to which this Life was to be an appendix - was projected, eight years ago, the first idea was that a single volume would suffice, both for a Biography of the poet, and for a criticalessayuponhim. Assoou as the work of research began, however, so much new material accumulated from many sources, that it was judged expedient, not only to extend the Biography from one volume to two, and ultimately to three, but to ex clude the critical Essay, reserving it for a future occasion, and a difl'erent purpose. Book Synopsis Selected Poems of Giovanni Pascoli by : Giovanni Pascoli
Download or read book Selected Poems of Giovanni Pascoli written by Giovanni Pascoli and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most comprehensive collection in English of the founder of modern Italian poetry Giovanni Pascoli (1855–1912)—the founder of modern Italian poetry and one of Italy's most beloved poets—has been compared to Robert Frost for his evocation of natural speech, his bucolic settings, and the way he bridges poetic tradition and the beginnings of modernism. Featuring verse from throughout his career, and with the original Italian on facing pages, Selected Poems of Giovanni Pascoli is a comprehensive and authoritative collection of a fascinating and major literary figure. Reading this poet of nature, grief, and small-town life is like traveling through Italy's landscapes in his footsteps—from Romagna and Bologna to Rome, Sicily, and Tuscany—as the country transformed from an agrarian society into an industrial one. Mixing the elevated diction of Virgil with local slang and the sounds of the natural world, these poems capture sense-laden moments: a train's departure, a wren's winter foraging, and the lit windows of a town at dusk. Incorporating revolutionary language into classical scenes, Pascoli's poems describe ancient rural dramas—both large and small—that remain contemporary. Framed by an introduction, annotations, and a substantial chronology, Taije Silverman and Marina Della Putta Johnston's translations render the variety, precision, and beauty of Pascoli's poetry with a profoundly current vision.

This book was released on 2014-02-27 with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: “King Lear (The Unabridged Play) + The Classic Biography: The Life of William Shakespeare” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. King Lear is a tragedy by William Shakespeare written between 1603 and 1606 and later revised. Shakespeare's earlier version, The True Chronicle of the History of the Life and Death of King Lear and His Three Daughters, was published in quarto in 1608. The Tragedy of King Lear, a more theatrical version, was included in the 1623 First Folio. The title character descends into madness after disposing of his estate between two of his three daughters based on their flattery, bringing tragic consequences for all. The play is based on the legend of Leir of Britain, a mythological pre-Roman Celtic king. Life of William Shakespeare is a biography of William Shakespeare by the eminent critic Sidney Lee. This book was one of the first major biographies of the Bard of Avon. It was published in 1898, based on the article contributed to the Dictionary of National Biography. William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, the authorship of some of which is uncertain. Sir Sidney Lee (1859 – 1926) was an English biographer and critic. He was a lifelong scholar and enthusiast of Shakespeare. His article on Shakespeare in the fifty-first volume of the Dictionary of National Biography formed the basis of his Life of William Shakespeare. This full-length life is often credited as the first modern biography of the poet.
