The book begins with an introductory chapter on the nature of MSW and the importance of solid waste management programs and resource recovery. Chapter 2 discusses MSW storage and collection, with emphasis on recyclables. Chapter 3 examines issues involved in determining the quantity, composition, and key physical characteristics of the MSW to be managed and processed. The book's other chapters cover topics such as the steps required for processing MSW for material recovery, the use of uncomposted organic matter as a soil amendment, composting and use of compost product, the marketing of recyclables, biogasification, and integrated waste management. Composting and Recycling Municipal Solid Waste provides essential information needed by solid waste professionals, consultants, regulators, and planners to arrive at rational decisions regarding available economic and technological resources for MSW composting and recycling.

Book excerpt: FROM THE PREFACE The main objective of composting is to transform organic materials into a stable usable product. Often organic materials which may have limited beneficial use in their raw state or have regulatory disposal constraints can be transformed by composting into marketable products. The limits on beneficial reuse may be regulations or they may be due to the potential for materials to be putrescible or pathogenic. Composting can be a solution for each of these. The implementation of composting on a large scale (in contrast to home or backyard composting) involves materials handling. Technological implementation of composting must be consistent with the biological demand of the system. If the biological system is violated, conditions will not be optimized for composting, and problems such as odor generation, insufficient aeration or moisture, or a combination of these conditions may result. Past problems and closure of facilities have been largely due to violations of the biological systems. Product quality with respect to particle size, inclusions, moisture content and other physical aspects are a function of engineering design. A well designed system must have the biological and engineering principles in harmony at all times.

Book excerpt: Dolphins are our closest relatives in the ocean. Like us, they are mammals - they are warm-blooded and give birth to fully formed babies that feed on milk from their mothers. Dolphins love to play and often swim with humans near the beach. They have been known to defend humans from shark attacks and have even rescued people from drowning. But there have also been reports of dolphins that have injured swimmers or held them under water. Dolphins are usually friendly, but we should remember that they are also wild predators and can be aggressive.

Book excerpt: A Twist in the POGO's Tale is a very detailed personal account of one man's journey and experience in building a life and a profession in the Army through the transformative decades after the World War II. The author has provided an insight into what it was like for a young Queensland man to be swept up in the Australian coming of age entailed in closer engagement with Asia, after the Western ascendancy ended in the decade following the surrender of Japan in 1945.The new Australian Army of the Sixties and the Seventies engaged in a form of warfare that was very different to that experienced by earlier generations. Nothing was straightfor-ward and everything was complex.POGOs, like the author, could no longer be considered to be separate from the battle and had to be trained and ready to take their part in the action. That is part of the twist in this story. The other part is the sympathetic con-nection with Vietnam that followed for many veterans of the War and is very much a part of this POGO's Tale.
