Book excerpt: Africa Adventures is two African Quests--Hair-Breadth Escapes and Perils In The Transvaal and Zululand. They are in one volume by Rev. Henry Cadwallader Adams, the famous story teller. Adams wrote teen novels specializing in tales of Victorian School life as well as adventures in distance regions of the Empire that became widely popular among readers of all ages. The two books presented here were originally published as two separate works. However because of the similar outline it has been combined into one volume, so as to make the reading experience more enjoyable. “Hair-Breadth Escapes” is the Adventures of Three Boys traveling on foot through South Africa in 1805. The boys learned about survival in wild country of South Africa. “Perils in the Transvaal and Zululand” is a Boys Adventures through South Africa in KwaZulu-Natal Province. It is one of the most rugged regions in the country. The region along the Indian Ocean coast is extremely wild. It is tale of survival and intrigue in one of Africa’s most rough country. Although these stories were wrote with the teenage boys in mind they are suitable to all ages. So whether you are 14 years old or 40 you will find these two adventures so griping that you will not be able to put it down. Many illustrations that were in the original printing have been added to this volume. The illustrations have been touched up and colored. The spelling of many of the outdated words and punctuation has been modernized. We have also added a linked table of contents which will take you directly to the book or chapter of your chose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone wants to live a life that enables them to make the most of their unique gifts, interests, and passions-to find their true calling, the work they were born to do. Whistle While You Work is a liberating guide that uses powerful stories and exercises to help readers find truly satisfying, fulfilling work consistent with their deepest values. The authors combine a thoughtful and practical discussion about calling with examples showing how to apply these ideas to one's life. They mix in dozens of inspiring stories featuring individuals who have found, or are in the process of finding, their calling with straightforward advice and suggestions on how to discover one's calling. Most importantly, they provide readers with a solid path for embracing calling, a subject usually addressed abstractly in a useful, fun, and systematic way. Through a unique Calling Card exercise that features a guided exploration of 52 "natural preferences" -- such as Advancing Ideas, Doing the Numbers, Building Relationships, Performing Events -- the book gives readers a new way to detect and reflect on the core of their life's work. By using this and other tools in the book, readers develop their own answers to three critical questions: What gift do I naturally give to others? What gift do I most enjoy giving to others? What gift have I most often given to others? In answering those questions, they will reveal to themselves their calling-and ultimately move toward new realms of success and fulfillment. Whistle While You Work is an inspiring, effective, and entertaining approach to discovering one's calling. It will equip all of us with the mind-set, stories, coaching, and, perhaps most importantly, the hope we need to find our way ahead-and see a clear picture of what our right work is and what to do with our limited time here on Earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bill York, who recently passed away, once said, “Most guiding for big game is pretty unadventuresome work.” However, when there is excitement, it comes in spades, and Bill York had his share of unusual encounters. From his early days in Kenya when he and a companion trekked alone through the desert of the NFD and had to fend off marauding lions that ate his caravan ponies to encountering a Mau Mau terrorist who took potshots at his victims with a stolen elephant gun, York gives an entertaining account of his life. York was there when the RAF bombed the rain forest to rid Kenya of the dreaded Mau Mau, and he explains how the bombing went awry—very few Mau Mau were killed but plenty of wounded and dangerously short-tempered buffalo were left to wreck havoc in the countryside. He gives an insider’s view to the funny and outrageous behavior of some his famous acquaintances--Eric Rundgren, Ken Dawson, Frank Broadbent, and Iodine Ionides. PH Eric Rundgren, for example, was so interested in getting himself good elephant tusks that he would scout out the best tuskers for himself and guide his clients to less desirable trophies! There are stories about how York found a cache of rhino and elephant ivory that J. A. Hunter had stashed before his death, and how John Boyes managed to exasperate British authorities with his dastardly deeds. There is an entire chapter on hunting giant forest hogs because Bill York spent a lot of time in their habitat, and there are encounters and adventures with crop-raiding elephant and ghost buffalo that could be seen but not killed. Then there is the story of a client who was so huge that York was not sure he could get the man a single trophy. As with York’s previous book, the pages are loaded with interesting anecdotes, fascinating tales, and well-written prose that give insight into East Africa and its more famous characters.

Book excerpt: In 'The African Trader; Or, The Adventures of Harry Bayford' by William Henry Giles Kingston, readers are taken on a thrilling journey through the dangers and hardships faced by the protagonist, Harry Bayford, as he embarks on a trading expedition to Africa. The book is written in a clear and engaging style, typical of Kingston's adventure novels, and is set in the context of the 19th century when exploration and colonization of Africa were topics of great interest. As Harry navigates encounters with wild animals, hostile tribes, and treacherous landscapes, readers are drawn into a vivid world of excitement and danger. The vivid descriptions of Africa and the moral lessons embedded in the narrative make this book a compelling read for fans of adventure literature. William Henry Giles Kingston, a prolific writer of adventure stories for children and young adults, drew inspiration from his own experiences at sea to craft engaging and educational tales of exploration and perseverance. His firsthand knowledge of maritime life and travel informs the authenticity and realism of the adventures depicted in 'The African Trader.' I recommend this book to readers who enjoy thrilling narratives set in exotic locales, and to those interested in the historical context of exploration and trade in Africa.
