Book excerpt: It really surprised me that I started writing articles for The Jewish Georgian, a local (Atlanta) publication. You will be surprised too when you read how it began. The radio comes on at 7:00 a.m. A really nice tune is playing and a new day begins. But I am caught up in memories and lie in bed a little longer than usual. It is December 29. Book excerpt: My Creative Mind came to me while driving around Wausau one day and wondering where it all came from, and where will it go, like great mysteries in life I shall never know. At that point I got off the road before I had an accident. I pulled in the parking lot of Pick N Save on Bridge St. and started writing. By that time I always had pen and paper with me. My memory isn’t that good. This poem also won an Editor’s Choice Award from Poetry.Com. Aunt Laura’s Wine Cellar also won Editor’s Choice from Poetry.com. I started writing this one about an upcoming family reunion and it just sort of became Aunt Laura’s. There really was an Aunt Laura and yes she really did have a wine cellar. This is one of those things that became a part of our family’s history. I shared it at the reunion and it brought back a lot of great memories. It also seems I wasn’t the only one to find an excuse to go downstairs to “get something” for Aunt Laura. Of course she knew what we were up to but we think she was flattered by the attention too. Then there was cousin Karen who said “hey wait a minute guys, I was never in Aunt Laura’s wine cellar, where was it?” Well sorry Karen. It seems you were the only one never in it. Geeze that’s really too bad. Aunt Laura has been passed on for some time now but oh what memories she left us with. Thank you Aunt Laura. I was getting to know more about Ginger Hartman and realized how much she had endured in life and yet survived. My first poem was basically a response to her poems and life and to prove that “hey. I can write one too.” Well I did and haven’t stopped. Perhaps I never will. The first poem was entitled How the Hell Did You Do It? It’s a bit of an unusual name but the words bare out an explanation. I wrote a few more about her, about her and me, about myself and then about many other people, places and things. Without her poems I never would have tried to write even one. I owe my creative endeavors to Ginger and shall be forever grateful for her inspiration, support and encouragement. You never know what life will send your way but when it does just grab on with both hands and let life happen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a collection of personal essays that are “both rip-roaringly funny and sentimental, drawing natural (and justified) comparisons to David Sedaris and David Rakoff” (Esquire), longtime recording artist and actor Sam Harris recounts stories of friendship, love, celebrity, and growing up and getting sober. In sixteen brilliantly observed true stories, Sam Harris emerges as a natural humorist in league with David Sedaris, Chelsea Handler, Carrie Fisher, and Steve Martin, but with a voice uniquely his own. Praised by the Chicago Sun-Times for his “manic, witty commentary,” and with a storytelling talent The New York Times calls “New Yorker– worthy,” he puts a comedic spin on full-disclosure episodes from his own colorful life. In “I Feel, You Feel” he opens for Aretha Franklin during a blizzard. “Promises” is a front-row account of Liza Minnelli’s infamous wedding to “the man whose name shall go unmentioned.” In “The Zoo Story” Harris desperately searches for a common bond with his rough-and-tumble four-year-old son. What better place to find painfully funny material than in growing up gay, gifted, and ambitious in the heart of the Bible belt? And that’s just the first cut: From partying to parenting, from Sunday school to getting sober, these slices of Ham will have you laughing and wiping away salty tears in equal measure with their universal and down-to-earth appeal. After all, there’s a little ham in all of us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meditation day books are popular spiritual or inspirational guides, but none have been written quite like this one. Drawing from over 50 years of working and creating, teaching and nurturing students in theatre, the author uses quotes from plays as a basis for rumination and the exploration of life, making this particular volume part memoir, part life philosophy, and part mini theatre history vignettes. This volume is written to be read each day, with one writing for each of 366 days of a year. With a spiritual message at the heart of the work, the book will also appeal to theatre and arts lovers. The author has many years experience in teaching the Enneagram, the Arts as a transcendent adventure, and other wisdom subjects. This meditation collection is good for any spiritual seeker who brings a clear heart and an open mind to spiritual exploration. As the author says, “One of the extraordinary things about working in the theatre day in and day out is that the words of the script of the play I am creating soak through my clothing, permeate my skin, penetrate my brain, and saturate my life.” From these quotes, Sloan has created short reflections on life, arranged thematically for every day of the year. Plays, written by real people over the centuries, brim with the same sort of emotions and challenges, joys and fears that impact us today. The characters warn, rejoice, fuss, complain, doubt, advise, and cheer their fellows just as we do today. In this work, Sloan suggests that reading and watching plays can assist us as we review the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual natures of our own lives. From new beginnings in January to tying up loose ends in December, these meditations become a daily traveling partner for those who want to reflect on how art and literature influence and become a part of our lives.

Book excerpt: Ready Player One meets Stranger Things in this new novel by the bestselling author who George RR Martin describes as "an excellent writer." In January 1986, fifteen-year-old boy-genius Nick Hayes discovers he's dying. And it isn't even the strangest thing to happen to him that week. Nick and his Dungeons & Dragons-playing friends are used to living in their imaginations. But when a new girl, Mia, joins the group and reality becomes weirder than the fantasy world they visit in their weekly games, none of them are prepared for what comes next. A strange--yet curiously familiar--man is following Nick, with abilities that just shouldn't exist. And this man bears a cryptic message: Mia's in grave danger, though she doesn't know it yet. She needs Nick's help--now. He finds himself in a race against time to unravel an impossible mystery and save the girl. And all that stands in his way is a probably terminal disease, a knife-wielding maniac and the laws of physics. Challenge accepted.

Her dog, Peaches, is with her; she is reunited with her beloved grandparents; she has the wardrobe of a movie star; and she lives in the house of her dreams next door to a handsome guy. This is heaven! But there’s a catch. Alex must prove she led a fulfilling existence by writing an essay on the ten best days of her life—or she will be demoted to a lower level of heaven, where the clothes are last year’s styles, the men aren’t quite as handsome, and, worst of all, Peaches and her family won’t be nearby. Witty and inspiring, this divine debut novel dares to ask a material girl—and the rest of us—what makes life precious.

She's happy silently crushing on best friend Cas, and blissfully ignoring the future after high school. But the universe has other plans. It delivers Devon's cousin Foster, an unrepentant social outlier with a surprising talent, and the obnoxiously superior and maddeningly attractive jock, Ezra, right where she doesn't want them--first into her P.E. class and then into every other aspect of her life. With wit, heart, and humor to spare, First & Then is a contemporary novel about falling in love--with the unexpected boy, with a new brother, and with yourself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little Victories, Small Defeats Our world is fully capable of taking an innocent, sensitive, intelligent young man and through death, hypocrisy, retribution and remorse turn him into a drifting, aimless shell of what he might have been. That this happens to James Branaugh is not a story in itself. That James can find his way back from a useless existence, find and give lasting love, and muster the will to redeem his place in society while battling for his life, is a story. That tale comprises the theme of this book. James, the central character, hails from a small farm in the back country of West Virginia. Before his life can really begin, he is left spiritually destitute through the death of his wife and daughter at the hands of a small time drug dealer, and morally adrift by his own redress of the crime. The next several decades of idle wander brings him full circle to his boyhood home. This return is made to finally embrace peace and live his remaining years amid the soothing comfort of the ancestral farm. Before any solace is found, James finds himself in the middle of an old and on-going Machiavellian plot to acquire or control all lands in the immediate area including his own. The ever escalating war of greed is delivered to his doorstep by none other than a US Senator and County Sheriff. Thankfully, James does not have to fight alone, and acquires fellow soldiers in the form of a crippled lawyer, half crazy woodsman, renegade FBI agent and a two-fisted lover. The battles rage from Washington townhouses to high pasture barns and include some decidedly undesirables in hand-to-hand fighting. Someone once said that “all real stories end in death”. Death is no stranger to the characters in this archetypical yarn of good versus evil. Set among bucolic hills, the rustic normalcy of country life serves as counterpoint to the chaotic appeal of contemporary living. The charm of simplicity stands in stark contrast to the narcotic of progress. This blend of contradictory desires and lifestyles forms the backdrop for a reflection on greed gone mad. That James can succeed is given. Whether he does and how he goes about it is the story.
