Book excerpt: In jazz circles, players and listeners with “big ears” hear and engage complexity in the moment, as it unfolds. Taking gender as part of the intricate, unpredictable action in jazz culture, this interdisciplinary collection explores the terrain opened up by listening, with big ears, for gender in jazz. Essays range from a reflection on the female boogie-woogie pianists who played at Café Society in New York during the 1930s and 1940s to interpretations of how the jazzman is represented in Dorothy Baker’s novel Young Man with a Horn (1938) and Michael Curtiz’s film adaptation (1950). Taken together, the essays enrich the field of jazz studies by showing how gender dynamics have shaped the production, reception, and criticism of jazz culture. Scholars of music, ethnomusicology, American studies, literature, anthropology, and cultural studies approach the question of gender in jazz from multiple perspectives. One contributor scrutinizes the tendency of jazz historiography to treat singing as subordinate to the predominantly male domain of instrumental music, while another reflects on her doubly inappropriate position as a female trumpet player and a white jazz musician and scholar. Other essays explore the composer George Russell’s Lydian Chromatic Concept as a critique of mid-twentieth-century discourses of embodiment, madness, and black masculinity; performances of “female hysteria” by Les Diaboliques, a feminist improvising trio; and the BBC radio broadcasts of Ivy Benson and Her Ladies’ Dance Orchestra during the Second World War. By incorporating gender analysis into jazz studies, Big Ears transforms ideas of who counts as a subject of study and even of what counts as jazz. Book excerpt: From New York Times bestselling author F. Paul Wilson, Repairman Jack is back in the urban adventure thriller, Hosts. As his fans know, Repairman Jack doesn't deal with electronic appliances; he's a situation fixer, no matter how weird or deadly a situation may be. Repairman Jack has no last name, no Social Security number, and no qualms when it comes to getting the job done--even if it means putting himself in serious danger. After fifteen years of separation, Jack is contacted by his long-lost sister, Kate, to help her track down the source of her girlfriend Jeanette's sudden trance-like behavior. Referred by a mysterious stranger who gives only Jack's name and phone number, Kate is shocked to find out that the "repairman" she seeks is none other than her little brother--and not altogether happy to find out what little "Jackie" has been doing with himself for all these years. With Jack leading the way, Kate finds out that Jeannette's behavior can be traced back to the experimental therapy she underwent for a brain tumor: now Jeannette's brain and those of several other subjects are infected by a mutated virus. Like any good virus, it wants to multiply--and if Jack can't stop the virus in its path, there will be deadly results. Meanwhile, Jack is traveling on the 9 train when suddenly a passenger goes berserk and starts shooting at random--leaving Jack no choice but to throw himself into the spotlight by putting the shooter down. Worse for Jack, one of his fellow passengers is a reporter for the local tabloid, The Light, who sees Jack's heroism as his ticket to journalistic stardom. The reporter promises to make Jack a celebrity hero, a household name--which could mean the end of Repairman Jack as we know him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A child psychologist struggles to come to grips with her own dark childhood memories, in this “mesmerizing, unsettling novel” (The New York Times). When eight-year-old Julia was asked to be a bridesmaid at her cousin’s wedding, she was thrilled. Nothing, not even her mother’s resentment of the expensive, inconvenient traveling, could dull her excitement. But when the day finally arrived and she took her cousin’s baby on a secret stroll around the block in his pram, her entire world shifted. She couldn’t possibly know the impact the fateful trip would have on her future. A lifetime later, Julia is a child psychologist working with young girls at risk. In her sessions, Julia has a knack for determining which of her young patients are truly troubled, and which are simply at the mercy of the oppressive adults around them. In this quietly powerful story of the relationship between past and current reality, Julia’s own troubled childhood begins to invade her present, and she is forced to confront the events of that day—and discover whether the truth about her past, and her guilt, is as devastating as she has always feared. “The book it most reminded me of was Julian Barnes’s The Sense of an Ending. There is the same sense of psychological detective story, of piecing together the fragments of an unresolved past.” —The Guardian “A gripping read.” —The Observer

Book excerpt: Excerpts from the Story It was the morning of their fourth day at sea, and Nathan, awakened suddenly, sat up; something was different. He threw on a few clothes, and ran out on deck. It didnt take long to figure out what was different. The Catherine Ross was running with full sail aloft, filled by a strong gale, and Captain Stuart was making good use of the wind while it lasted. Thus far, the passengers had been spared the usual scourge of new seafarers; seasickness. However, on the fifth day, it caught up with Reverend Wolde. The cook took charge, fed him special food, and said it would run its course in a day or so. However, Nathan was not reassured, and felt certain he would be buried at sea. Two days later, hed made it out on deck with his wife and was enjoying the fresh air, when a call came from the Crows Nest, Ship Ahoy. Well now, this was something new, and they quickly scanned the horizon. But there was nothing there to see. A crew member, who saw them looking, walked over and said nothing would be visible from deck level until late the next day. That evening, Ian said it might be the MacTavish clipper, Anne Ross, bound for Newfoundland, but they would have to wait until the two ships got closer to be sure. Nathan and Mary Catherine were sitting underneath their hammocks discussing the events of the day. Nathan, dont you think its a bit odd for two ships to meet in the middle of the ocean like this? I doubt the Captains just want to say howdy to each other; I believe theres more to it. Well, my dear, Nathan replied, I know you pretty well. Youre not thinking its some sort of conspiracy, so it must be one of your premonitions. All right, Mary Catherine, lets hear it. Its the weather, Nathan. The other Captain is going to warn us were sailing into a storm. The carriages stopped on top of a hill overlooking the Firth of Tay, and the family got out to look. Directly opposite them, atop a high bluff, was The Barony. Mary Catherine gasped. Oh my God, Nathan, surely that cant be where were going, can it. I believe thats got to be your fathers place, my dear. Youre almost home now. She grabbed the front of his coat with both hands and shook him. Reverend Wolde, that is not my home! My home is across that ocean in the mountains of Virginia, where I live happily with my family. Look at me, Nathan; help me. I cant do this alone. She believed him to be sleeping in his chair, but the Baron, heard the door close and stood on trembling leg. Father, was all she got out before the tears came, and she was folded into his arms. My beautiful daughter, how lovely you are. If only your mother could see you now, he sobbed.
