Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Little Shepherdess: A Comedy in One Act Andre Rivoire was born at Vienne in 1872. His early education was received at Lyon. Later he came to Paris and there in 1895 he published his first volume of poems, Les Vierges. The poet Sully Prudhomme said of this volume, to which he wrote a preface: "The author has described some extremely delicate states of the soul, using only the traditional resources of versification." M. Rivoire is one of the genuine poets of the younger generation; into his plays too ("La Peur de Souffrir," "Il Etait une Bergere -" and "Pour Vivre Heureux") he has infused much of his poetic spirit, yet the success of "A Temperamental Journey" ("Pour Vivre Heureux") proves the power of the poet to construct a play at once dramatic and beautiful. "The Little Shepherdess" requires the simplest of settings. An ordinary out-door set, with painted trees and underbrush, or with practical set-pieces is sufficient. The costumes should be eighteenth century style. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Little Boss A Comedy Drama in Four Acts is an engaging, thought provoking, and entirely entertaining play written by Frank L. Bixby. This play offers an historic glimpse at America during a period of racial strife, economic turmoil, and social changes that affected families both humorously and dramatically. Bixby's take on the American experience is at times true to the experience of the "every man" and at other times made more humorous or dramatic for entertainment purposes. An interesting read for modern playwrights and theater scholars, Bixby's play presents a historic look at play writing, story, the use of drama and comedy, and character development. For historians, Bixby's play also holds some interesting insight into American dialects, societal beliefs and major social issues of specific time periods, and typified groups often seen characterized in classic literature. Bixby's play can also be used as a guide for the modern playwright on what comedy works and what comedy does not work in the present-day theater. At times, Bixby almost goes too far to demonstrate negative qualities about certain groups or types of individuals, and while applicable to a certain time frame in American history, some of these characters could easily be considered offensive by modern readers. The Little Boss A Comedy Drama in Four Acts offers a glimpse into historic America with all the drama and comedy it has to offer. Bixby's play stands out as both an entertaining read and a guide for current and future playwrights on what works and what does not work in theatrical literature. This book is an interesting read for individuals who enjoy plays, the theater, and American societal history. But the reader who may find in the first six plays matter less weighty than he desires, however amusing it may be, will find the later group as full as he can wish of that profound penetration of the mask of humanity, that admirable humour, that comprehension and characterisation Of men and women in general, which make Moliere as fresh nowadays as ever, and which refresh, charm, enlighten, and warn us at one and the same time. But of course the charm in reading will be most present to those who can, as Mr. Van Laun urges, call up, as they read, the change of voice, the step, the smile, the gesture, the twinkle of the eye or movement of the head in the actor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comedies in Miniature In presenting these plays and monologues to the public, the publishers have in mind not only their interest as literature for the general reader, but their special value for those interested in amateur dramaticals as well. All of the pieces here printed were written expressly to be acted, and have been performed with great success by amateur actors in various parts of the country; two of them have even had the distinction and guarantee of a performance by the students of Mr. Franklin H. Sargent's school, the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Of Mrs. Cameron's work Mr. Sargent has expressed himself as follows: "Theatrically and dramatically I can say that I believe her plays are most unusual and valuable. In the midst of the great dearth and second-rate results, which are so common in the playwriting field, the plays of Mrs. Cameron seem, to myself and my associates of the Academy, to be exceptionally brilliant, dramatically effective, and theatrically valuable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Classics, Vol. 9: Comedy Barny O'reirdon was a fisherman of Kin-sale, and a heartier fellow never hauled a net nor cast a line into deep water: indeed Barny, independently of being a merry boy among his companions, a lover of good fun and good whiskey, was looked up to, rather, by his brother fishermen, as an intelligent fellow, and few boats brought more fish to market than Barny O'Reirdon's; his opinion on certain points in the craft was considered law, and in short, in his own little community, Barny was what is commonly called a leading man. Now your leading man is always jealous in an inverse ratio to the sphere of his influence, and the leader of a nation is less incensed at a rival's triumph than the great man of a village. If we pursue this descending scale, what a desperately jealous person the oracle of oyster-dredges and cockle-women must be! Such was Barny O'Reirdon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Four Comedies He had undertaken a big task. He had set himself to over throw a tough-rooted tradition. He was at war with the famous Commedia dell' Arte. For although she had little dramatic literature, all Italy buzzed with plays. An author devised a plot and pinned it somewhere in the wings of the theatre. The comedians perused it, learned the names by which they were to address each other, and then, supported by a few set speeches for given situations, walked on to the stage and improvised the dialogue. The persons in these plays had long ago solidified into types, and the actors presented them in conventional masks. Goldoni's theatre, like Moli'ere's, arose from this ancient tradition; and intermittently through out the long pageant of his dramatic works (they number about three hundred) its familiar figures recur - Harlequin now turning a toe, Pantaloon now wagging a beard. Some critics, indeed, consider that in 'the Fan (one of our plays) the old types attain their perfection. In cfi'ect, however, Goldoni - striving against violent and protracted opposition - hunted these puppets from the stage and replaced them with figures drawn from life.
