Book excerpt: Beautiful. -Recommended by Tân, City Lights Books A man drives his truck up to a cliff's edge. Unable to go any further, he opens the back door of his truck and a flock of birds flies out, but, as the man soon discovers, a small timid bird remains. Surprised and delighted, the man acts kindly towards the bird and an intimacy develops. After lunch, the man tries to show the bird that he should fly off and join his friends. The man's comic attempt at flight deepens the encounter between these two very different creatures. Soon the bird flies off and the man drives away, but in a surprise twist the bird and his friends return, and in a starkly lyrical moment we see them all experience something entirely new. Germano Zullo is a prolific writer and poet who lives in Geneva, Switzerland. He writes for adults and children alike, and has written many popular children's comics and stories. Albertine has illustrated loads of children's books and also illustrates for many of the daily French newspapers in Switzerland. She teaches at the School of Visual Arts in Geneva.

Book excerpt: Nominated for the 2020 CILIP Carnegie Medal Bridie lives on the remote Scottish island of Tornish, the youngest of three sisters. Although she loves her island, with its wild seas and big skies, she guiltily nurses a secret dream of flight - to America and the freedom of the New World. But her family are struggling under the spiteful oppression of the new Laird, and it seems that even some of the Laird's own household are desperate to leave. When the Laird's full cruelty becomes apparent, there's no more time for daydreams as Bridie needs to help the people she loves escape to safety. Cover and chapter head illustrations by Jasu Hu. Map illustration by Hannah Horn. The first in a gripping, dramatic new series from much-loved author, Karen McCombie. "This involving, evocative tale, narrated by Bridie with a hint of period language, is a study of rich and poor, offering clearly-drawn characters."- Nicolette Jones, Sunday Times, Children's Book of the Week "There's heart in this Scottish adventure. . . This is (Karen's) best. It has a vivid setting, emotional punch and characters to really care about." - Alex O'Connell, The Times, Children's Book of the Week "It may all seem a far cry from the "slushy, gushy love songs" of Ally's World. And yet here, as there, McCombie displays her gift, which is to create a narrator who sounds thoroughly convincing, and to inhabit the consciousness of a child." Emily Bearn, The Telegraph "Little Bird Flies by Karen McCombie is the evocative and beautifully written tale of Bridie (Little Bird) who dreams of a bigger life than the one she's destined for on her tiny Scottish isle of Tornish. With themes of immigration and prejudice and characters you'll root for, this will appeal to fans of Emma Carroll and Marie-Louise Jensen." - Michelle Harrison, author of A Pinch of Magic

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Matthew Papuchis, a father of three on the cusp of his fortieth birthday, found himself unemployed for the first time in more than 25 years, he battled self-doubt as he looked for hope and happiness-and a new job-amid a global pandemic. During this trying time, while continuing to pursue new career paths, he discovered the hope and happiness he was seeking in an unsuspecting place-nature paths. And via an unsuspecting source-birds. Little ones and big ones and the preserves, parks, and wildlife refuges they called home, all within miles of Matt's house in Plantation, Florida. He discovered by exploring a relatively unknown world and taking the time to think and reflect, while in search of those hidden gems, he found peace, clarity, and himself. Matt also learned lessons that apply to everyday life. Each chapter focuses on one lesson, including those on perspective and positivity. Above all, he learned to never lose hope in the possibilities that are out there, for himself and all of us. The book will make you laugh, cry and leave you with nuggets of wisdom and inspiration as you learn what the little-and big-birdies told him. Advanced Praise for A Little Birdie Told Me... "This inspiring book has something for everyone. Matt has masterfully and seamlessly weaved his story into life lessons, some provided from the difficult part of his journey. A Little Birdie Told Me... will resonate with bird lovers, baseball fans, and all those in between." - Tim Kurkjian, New York Times Best-Selling Author and Major League Baseball Analyst for ESPN "A Little Birdie Told Me...is a book that offers inspiration and valuable learnings for all readers, including business leaders and those who want to become a more empathetic and understanding executive. The lessons Matthew shares during his journey of self-reflection are relatable and applicable to all of us and I recommend this book to fellow hoteliers, parents, and citizens of the world." -Hervé J.L. Humler, Chairman Emeritus, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company "A delightful read - Matt has such an easy way with words. He skillfully weaves important life lessons around his newfound passion for birds, discovered during the pandemic lockdown. We can all relate to the wise lessons in this book and laugh at some of the amusing experiences Matt shared. By the end of this book, you will feel like you and Matt are old friends." - Peter G. Kaestner, World's No. 1 eBirder with 9,294 Species Observed "A Little Birdie Told Me... is an absorbing set of life lessons forged from a journey through nature and self-reflection. Whether in crisis or calm, this book demonstrates the power of being more fully attendant to naturally occurring beauty, tranquility, and majesty. If you're ready to venture down an insightful path to peace, purposefulness, and success, it's time to step into this book." -Joseph Michelli, PhD, New York Times No. 1 Best-Selling author of books like Stronger Through Adversity, The Airbnb Way, and Leading the Starbucks Way "A Little Birdie Told Me...is not about COVID, losing your job, or birding. COVID offers context, job loss represents the unexpected challenges life can throw at any of us, and birding illustrates how being receptive to the wonders of the world can enrich our lives and feed our souls. The narrative is honest, vulnerable, and inspiring. Papuchis is masterful at inviting readers to embrace the work on their terms. His approach is consistent with the sentiment expressed by Kahlil Gibran's famous quote: "If he is indeed wise, he does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your mind." Enjoy this wonderful read and buy a copy for someone you love." -Leo Bottary, author of three books, including Peennovation: What Peer Advisory Groups Can Teach Us About Building High-Performing Teams

Book excerpt: Esther Sullivan has no idea how much she will lose from the Civil War... or how much she will gain. "Why did you let David join the army?" she asked quietly, sitting below her father and gazing toward Mama's distant grave. He took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "I cannot force him to believe the way I do, and I cannot force him to stay here. So I said I wouldn't stand in his way." He sighed again. "It's better this way. He will want to come back home, whereas if he had run off, it would be harder for him to face me." Esther nodded and leaned against his leg. "I only hope that he will get his fill of it soon." Esther's father reached down and smoothed her hair away from her forehead. "And come back to us." The war becomes real to Esther when her brother David leaves their Pennsylvania farm to join Lincoln's army. Her father's faith and strength help her through the trying days ahead, but when he is drafted and then captured by the Confederates, she feels incredibly alone. Leaving a home haunted with memories, Esther joins a field hospital unit and nurses wounded soldiers. She finds her brother's captain, Daniel Armstrong, dying from a bullet wound infection and ignored by the doctors. She had saved his life once before, and maybe, with God's help, she can save it again. Join Esther on her journey to womanhood through the confusing and heartbreaking years of the Civil War. The compelling, realistic relationships in her life bring humor, adventure, grief, faith, and romance as she cares for others, despite all she has lost.

Book Synopsis Kathy Little Bird by : Benedict Freedman
Download or read book Kathy Little Bird written by Benedict Freedman and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2005-12-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of her life, Kathy Little Bird has heard stories of her grandmother, Mrs. Mike, from her own mother, a Cree Indian nurse who married a wounded Austrian soldier during the waning years of World War II. Living with her mother and stepfather on the plains of St. Alban, Kathy takes the tradition of Cree music to heart—“singing” the wilderness and the people she knows so well. But Kathy longs for freedom from her sheltered life and takes her first chance to get away, marrying a charming con artist who promises her the world—and leaving behind her childhood sweetheart. Staying in seedy hotels and singing in run-down clubs, she slowly finds the fame she craves. But screaming fans and hit songs cannot fill the hole within her heart—the aching need she has for the native people she left behind, the father she never knew, and a love that will calm her restless soul. Brimming with hardship, hope, the struggles of the heart, and the turbulence of a world on the brink of change, this new novel is the moving story of one woman’s attempt to make her mark on the world—without losing herself. “This is a book the reader will be unable to put down until the last page is read.”—Library Journal “Mrs. Mike is an unforgettable story, not only because it portrays the deep abiding affection between a man and a woman, but because it pictures the austere beauty of a country where life is at once simple and free, yet complicated by danger and hardship.”—Boston Herald
