Book Synopsis Lithostratigraphy of Sicily by : Luca Basilone
Download or read book Lithostratigraphy of Sicily written by Luca Basilone and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers as comprehensive an overview as possible of the lithostratigraphy of the Italian region of Sicily, taking into account the multiplicity of formational and terminological variability developed over more than a century of studies and publications. It presents stratigraphic terminology, the geological lexicon and the main stratigraphic subdivisions that are not familiar to Sicilian geologists. The new stratigraphic methods and the use of formations as mapping units have prompted the acquisition of new lithostratigraphic data, and a review of the previous units and their comparison with the new collected data, enabling the definition of a number of new lithostratigraphic units. The book summarizes the results in 77 worksheets containing the most important information regarding the lithological, sedimentological and microfacies characteristics, the measured thicknesses, areal extent and the regional aspects, the paleoenvironmental, paleogeographic and paleo-tectonics setting, compiled according to standard procedures and nomenclature rules provided by the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS).

Book excerpt: CROP Project: Deep Seismic Exploration of the Central Mediterranean and Italy presents and discusses new data ranging from Alps to Africa, obtained by the CROP PROJECT (transcrustal seismic exploration of the Mediterranean and Italy). New lithospheric imagings of relevant importance for understanding disputed topics are provided. Alps, Apennines, Calabrian Arc, Sicilian Apennine, Maghrebian Chain, Corso-Sardinian Block, paleo-basins (Ionian, Alpine Tethys), neo-basins (Balearic and Tyrrhenian) are innovatively reconstructed. - Provides new data from the Alps to Africa - Presents interpretation of the CROP seismic network data - Offers a stepwise increase in information with new data for further studies
Book Synopsis Miocene Stratigraphy by : A. Montanari
Download or read book Miocene Stratigraphy written by A. Montanari and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1997-06-18 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrated stratigraphy is essential for⧫ detailed paleoecologic studies of critical intervals in Earth history⧫ the calibration of the time scale for global use⧫ the establishment of Global Stratotype Sections and Points (GSSPs) for the definition of chronostratigraphic boundaries. This book constitutes an excellent and probably unique example of how interdisciplinary stratigraphic and geochronologic studies are approached with modern methodologies and techniques. It contains numerous unpublished, accurate radioisotopic dates of volcano-sedimentary layers interbedded in fossiliferous marine and continental Miocene sequences representing Mediterranean and Pacific environments. New, extremely detailed paleontologic data which constitute the basis for an accurate definition of the Miocene biostratigraphy, and the study of the ecologic evolution of Miocene marine environments are also included. The chapters are complimented by black-and-white photographs, graphic figures, and tables.Stratigraphers, paleontologists and sedimentologists plus geologists working in oil companies will certainly find this work of interest.

Book Synopsis Deciphering Earth's History: the Practice of Stratigraphy by : Angela Coe
Download or read book Deciphering Earth's History: the Practice of Stratigraphy written by Angela Coe and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2022-11-08 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stratigraphy allows us to establish and communicate the timings for the course of Earth history and provides the means to determine the duration and rates of Earth processes. Deciphering Earth’s History: the Practice of Stratigraphy focuses on how to apply the wide spectrum of stratigraphical techniques. It also explains how these techniques can be integrated and details their individual strengths and limitations. Chapters are laid out in a step-by-step style, guiding the reader through a recommended approach and explaining the factors to be considered. The methods are illustrated with flow charts, marginal top tips, checklists, worked examples and over 200 figures. Authors from academia, research centres and industry have contributed to ensure a wide range of perspectives are included. In addition to chapters on each of the stratigraphical techniques there is also material on accounting for stratigraphical incompleteness, constructing geological timescales, handling and archiving stratigraphical data and the application of stratigraphy to space exploration and other disciplines. This book is designed for a wide audience ranging from advanced level undergraduates to professional practitioners wishing to use other stratigraphical techniques or understand the advantages and weaknesses of particular techniques.
