Book excerpt: Upper Jurassic microbial carbonate buildups are proven petroleum reservoirs in southwest Alabama, including at Appleton, Vocation and Little Cedar Creek Fields. For the past 30 years, extensive effort has been applied to describing these microbial fabrics because of their influence on reservoir quality variability. The Smackover Formation at Little Cedar Creek Field in Conecuh County displays microbial lithofacies and reservoirs in a largely undolomitized state. These strata are an ideal dataset to characterize original microbial textures, providing more pristine information to interpret depositional environments and determine the extent that original depositional fabric controlled final reservoir quality. Various classifications of microbial fabrics have also provided models for interpreting depositional history and stratigraphic position of these buildups. This study recognizes five lithofacies in the Smackover Formation: a lower laminated mudstone, a peloidal packstone, a microbial bindstone, a laminated mudstone, and an ooid grainstone. Of the previously published models, Heydari and Baria (2005) provide the best characterization of the units found in Little Cedar Creek. This study enhances the Heydari and Baria (2005) and Mancini et. al. (2008) models by integrating new wells and data gathered in the decade since the model was proposed.

Book excerpt: The Upper Jurassic (Oxfordian) Smackover Formation is a shallow-marine carbonate unit in the subsurface of the U.S. Gulf Coast, spanning from south Texas to west Florida. This field case-study focuses on Little Cedar Creek Field located in southeastern Conecuh County, Alabama. The objectives of this study are to 1) construct a 3-D depositional model for the Smackover Formation at Little Cedar Creek Field; 2) establish a sequence stratigraphic framework for the construction of the depositional model; 3) characterize and map lithofacies with high resource potential based on the depositional model; and 4) demonstrate the use of the depositional model to maximize hydrocarbon recovery in the field area Little Cedar Creek Field is located near the up-dip limit of the Smackover Formation. The top of the Smackover is found at depths between 10,000 to 12,000 feet, and the formation ranges in thickness from 60 to 120 feet. The Smackover Formation overlies the Callovian-Oxfordian Norphlet Formation and underlies the Kimmeridgian Haynesville Formation. The petroleum reservoirs in Little Cedar Creek Field, unlike most Smackover fields in the eastern Gulf region, are composed predominantly of limestone, not dolomite, and do not possess a Buckner Anhydrite top seal immediately above the reservoir. Beginning from the top of the Smackover, the facies are: (S-1) Peritidal lime mudstone-wackestone; (S-2) tidal channel conglomeratic floatstone-rudstone; (S-3) peloid-ooid shoal grainstone-packstone; (S-4) subtidal lime wackestone-mudstone; (S-5) microbially-influenced packstone-wackestone; (S-6) microbial (thrombolite) boundstone; and (S-7) transgressive lime mudstone-dolostone. Production is from both the thrombolite boundstone and shoal grainstone facies, though pressure and fluid data indicate no communication between the two reservoirs. The data indicate that the microbial communities developed on subtle topographic highs overlying the transgressive lime mudstone-dolostone in a shallow-water, low-energy, hypersaline environment, parallel to the southwest-northeast trending paleoshoreline. The Conecuh Embayment, formed by the Conecuh and Pensacola Ridges to the northwest and southeast, respectively, created low-energy, tranquil conditions that promoted the development of these opportunistic microbial organisms.

Book excerpt: In this research, this history of important diagenetic phases of the Smackover Formation is investigated the history of using petrography, stable isotope geochemistry, cathodoluminescence, and fluid inclusion microthermometry. The focus is a study of three Smackover fields in the East Gulf Coastal Plain of the United States, namely the Appleton, Little Cedar Creek and Big Escambia Creek Fields in Alabama. Each of these represents a unique depositional or structural environment and each had materials, such as rock cores and chips and geophysical well logs available through the Geological Survey of Alabama and the State Oil and Gas Board of Alabama. A paragenetic sequence is established for each field from observations of core, thin section and/or cathodoluminescence, and interpretations of the diagenetic history are supported using geochemistry and fluid inclusion microthermometry. Early dolomitization was widespread and began as hypersaline brines that developed during the Buckner anhydrite formation descended into the Smackover. Later, during a marine transgression, the platform was flooded and this dilution created leached grains and moldic pores that are commonly observed. Following this, extensive periods of burial and recrystallization creates the mottled textures and zoned crystals evidenced in cathodoluminescence and the wide spread of temperature ranges reflected by the isotope and fluid inclusion data. Data from over 500 measurements of microthermometry analysis from two-phase fluid inclusions are presented from the three fields and shows minimum temperatures for the dolomitizing fluid begin at around 50℗ʻC, with salinities for the system that range from 13 to 27 wt% NaCl. Eutectic melting temperatures from fluid inclusions are used to characterize the composition of the brine in more detail and indicate complex and highly saline dolomitizing fluids with initial melting temperatures (mean -31 ℗ʻC) occurring far below a pure H2O-NaCl brine system, signifying the influence of MgCl2, and other salts such as CaCl2 and Kl.

During the Jurassic, southwestern Alabama was divided by Appalachian ridges into three sub-basins: the Conecuh Embayment, Manila Embayment, and the eastern extension of the Mississippi Interior Salt Basin. The complex is located in the Conecuh Embayment of southeastern Conecuh County, Alabama, and is the largest accumulation of hydrocarbons discovered in the state of Alabama. As of January of 2014 hydrocarbon production is currently over 31 million barrels of oil and over 34 billion cubic feet of gas. The microbolite buildups formed in an inner ramp setting of the Upper Jurassic (Oxfordian) Smackover Formation.The Little Cedar Creek and Brooklyn Fields are anomalous discoveries compared to other oil and gas fields in the region. Previous studies observed that microbial nucleation occurred on Paleozoic crystalline basement highs where depositional fabrics were heavily modified by dolomitization. Instead, the complex's microbolite buildups developed on mudstones, have no apparent association with paleo-highs, and have retained a large percentage of original depositional fabrics.This study found thrombolitic reefs develop on paleotopographic highs that were indicated by a thinning of underlying transgressive lime mudstones.

Book excerpt: The Late Jurassic Smackover Formation is part of a prolific petroleum system along the northern rim of the Gulf of Mexico with a long history of exploration. Most investigations into the Smackover have taken place in sub basins east of the East Texas basin and primarily focus on upper Smackover oolitic grainstone reservoirs, but only a few studies have been completed on the lower Smackover source rocks. Because of this, there is a lack of understanding related to the conditions under which the lower Smackover was deposited. This study provides a more complete understanding of the Smackover deposits in the East Texas through investigation of a long continuous 713-ft core drilled from the Sun Oil Travis GU No. 1 well in Van Zandt County, Texas. It contains a continuous section of Smackover lithofacies from lower Smackover mudstones to upper Smackover grainstones and contains a large portion of the overlying Buckner Anhydrite. The goal of this investigation is to lithologically and chemically characterize the Smackover Formation in order to create a type section for future studies and create a refined depositional model for East Texas Smackover deposition. High-resolution geochemical data composed of x-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), total organic carbon (TOC) and Rock-Eval, x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis, and isotope data was taken to fully characterize the section chemically. This geochemical dataset provides insight into controls on organic matter accumulation and destruction, diagenetic fluids, and local and global isotope signatures. With understandings of lithofacies distribution, depositional controls for organic accumulation and porosity development, and diagenesis the unconventional and conventional potential of the Smackover can be assessed.
