Book excerpt: Recent advances in Materials Science and Technology have paved the way for an array of wireless microdevices with ever increasing functionalities. The trend of power sources, in accordance with the shrinkage in the size of electronic devices, shifted from city line to regular batteries, and final goal may be miniaturized power sources. Rechargeable solid state batteries are the key components of the modern portable electronic equipment required by today s information rich mobile society. Lithium Cobalt Oxide is the most attractive cathode material for the rechargeable Li-ion battery, because it has high specific capacity, high operating cell voltage and excellent rechargeability. Systematic and detailed investigations were made on the growth and characterization of Lithium Cobalt Oxide Cathode thin films considering the importance of these films as binder-free cathode layers in the fabrication of all solid state thin film microbattery. Pulsed laser deposition technique, a novel, versatile method, has been employed for the growth of Lithium Cobalt Oxide thin films. The electrochemical characteristics of these films were also studied.

Book excerpt: We demonstrate a confinement effect where gold nanoparticles trapped within N-functionalized carbon nanofibers (N-CNFs) are more active for polyol oxidation and promote selectivity towards di-acid products, whereas AuNPs trapped on the surface produce as a major by-product the one derived from C C cleavage. As a result, the behavior of NPs confined inside the N-CNF channels can be attributed to a different, possibly multiple, coordination of glycerol on the active site.

Book Synopsis The Solid State Conversion Reaction of Cobalt Oxide and Iron Fluoride Thin Films by : Ryan Thorpe
Download or read book The Solid State Conversion Reaction of Cobalt Oxide and Iron Fluoride Thin Films written by Ryan Thorpe and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iron (II) fluoride and cobalt (II) oxide are candidate electrode materials for a new class of rechargeable lithium ion batteries known as conversion batteries. Although the energy storage capacity of these materials represents a significant improvement over that of conventional electrode materials, many challenges must be overcome before conversion batteries can become commercially viable. Chief among these challenges is a loss of energy storage capacity as a function of the number of charge-discharge cycles. In this study, FeF2 and CoO thin films have been studied as solid state analogues for lithium ion battery electrodes. These films were grown with different crystalline orientations and exposed to lithium in an ultra high vacuum chamber in order to simulate the discharge of a conversion electrode. The electronic structure and chemical phase of the films before and after exposure to lithium were characterized using x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS), and inverse photoemission spectroscopy (IPS). The depth and homogeneity of the conversion reaction in the thin films was measured as a function of lithium exposure using angle-resolved XPS (ARXPS). The crystalline structure and morphology were studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). For polycrystalline FeF2 and CoO films, the products of the solid state conversion reactions were similar to those observed in electrochemical measurements. However, parasitic reaction pathways were identified for both reactions. The products of these reaction were found to inhibit the full conversion of the thin films, and are possibly responsible for the poor reaction kinetics in electrochemical cells. Furthermore, the diffusion of lithium into the FeF2 and CoO surfaces, and the concomitant conversion reaction, was found to depend strongly on the orientation of the surface. These differences in diffusivity could partially be explained through geometric analyses of the crystalline structure of the films.

Download or read book Properties of a Carbon Negative Electrode in Completely Inorganic Thin Film Li-ion Batteries with a LiCoO[sub 2] Positive Electrode written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completely inorganic thin film lithium ion battery cells have been prepared by vapor deposition processes (vacuum evaporation and sputtering). The negative and positive electrodes were films of disordered carbon and lithium cobalt oxide, respectively. The results of battery charging/discharging and other measurements (e.g., in-situ lithium chemical diffusion constant measurements for the carbon films) indicate that disordered carbon films have a relatively high reversible charge capacity, (> 160 mC/cm[sup 2]-[mu]m, and possibly higher than 360 mC/cm[sup 2]-[mu]m, or> 296 and possibly 667 mAh/g, respectively, assuming the measured film density of 1.5g/cm[sup 3]), and a lithium chemical diffusion constant at room temperature[approximately]10[sup -9] cm[sup 2]/s. These results suggest that disordered carbon films should be good substitutes for metallic lithium in thin film rechargeable batteries.

Book Synopsis Electrochromic Lithium Nickel Oxide Thin Film by Pulsed Laser Deposition by :
Download or read book Electrochromic Lithium Nickel Oxide Thin Film by Pulsed Laser Deposition written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * Thin films of lithium nickel oxide were deposited by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) from targets of pressed LiNiO2 powder with layered structure. The composition, structure and surface air sensitivity of these films were analyzed using a variety of techniques, such as nuclear reaction analysis, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), x-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Optical properties were measured using a combination of variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry and IP spectroradiometry. Crystalline structure, surface morphology and chemical composition of Li(subscript x)Ni{sub 1-x}O thin films depend strongly on deposition oxygen pressure, temperature as well as substrate target distance. The films produced at temperatures lower than 600 degrees C spontaneously absorb CO2 and H2O at their surface once they are exposed to the air. The films deposited at 600 degrees C proved to be stable in air over a long period. Even when deposited at room temperature the PLD films are denser and more stable than sputtered films. RBS determined that the best electrochromic films had the stoichiometric composition L{sub 0.5}Ni{sub 0.5}O when deposited at 60 mTorr O2 pressure. Electrochemical tests show that the films exhibit excellent reversibility in the range 1.0 V to 3.4 V versus lithium and long cyclic life stability in a liquid electrolyte half cell. Electrochemical formatting which is used to develop electrochromism in other films and nickel oxide films is not needed for these stoichiometric films. The optical transmission range is almost 70% at 550 nm for 120 nm thick films.
