Book excerpt: Designing from Heritage deals with challenges architects are faced with when dealing with the conservation and reuse of built heritage, with a focus on Modern Movement Monuments. It discusses how to carry out a thorough analysis and evaluation of monuments upon which their conservation and transformation can be based. It is meant for MSc education, but may be of interest to architects in general. This book - the third in the Rondeltappe series - reflects the philosophy and didactic approach of Heritage and Architecture (H&A) section of the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment (Delft University of Technology). H&A has three chairs: Design, Cultural Value and Technology. They work in close cooperation to lay the foundations for the preservation and continuity of use of built heritage. Designing from Heritage is strongly connected to the first book in the Rondeltappe series which deals with durability and sustainability of monuments, and with the second which advocates freedom in heritage based design. It contains the contribution of Prof. Wessel de Jonge - the Chair of Heritage and Design and principle at Wessel de Jonge Architects - and Prof Marieke Kuipers - Chair of Culural Heritage in particular of the Architecture of the Twentieth Century and senior specialist of Twentieth Century Built Heritage at the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE). This book is meant as a tool for architectural education and conservation for which research is as integral part of the design strategy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural Heritage and the Future brings together an international group of scholars and experts to consider the relationship between cultural heritage and the future. Drawing on case studies from around the world, the contributing authors insist that cultural heritage and the future are intimately linked and that the development of futures thinking should be a priority for academics, students and those working in the wider professional heritage sector. Until recently, the future has never attracted substantial research and debate within heritage studies and heritage management, and this book addresses this gap by offering a balance of theoretical and empirical content that will stimulate multidisciplinary debate in the burgeoning field of critical heritage studies. Cultural Heritage and the Future questions the role of heritage in future making and will be of great relevance to academics and students working in the fields of museum and heritage studies, archaeology, anthropology, architecture, conservation studies, sociology, history and geography. Those working in the heritage professions will also find much to interest them within the pages of this book.

Book excerpt: Stone traders initially based in the Meuse valley, the Van Neurenberg family expanded northwards to Nijmegen and Dordrecht from 1530 on, becoming an international trading company in the process. Their subsequent activities reflect the huge changes the Dutch building sector underwent during the 17th century. They cooperated with the most famous artists of their time, such as Hendrick de Keyser in Amsterdam, and were involved in the most modern building projects of the Dutch Golden Age, such as Frederik Hendrik of Orange's Honselaarsdijk Palace. This study offers new insights into a relatively neglected aspect of Netherlandish building history in the 16th and 17th century. Dr. Gabri van Tussenbroek (1969) studied art history and medieval history at Utrecht University. Since 1 January 2006 he has worked as municipal building archaeologist in Amsterdam.

Book excerpt: This text outlines developments in the archaeological study of standing building, showing how they have contributed to our understanding of medieval domestic dwellings. Evidence from the buildings themselves, from excavation and from documentary sources is combined to provide an outline of the development of building techniques in the Middle Ages, and knowledge of the housing of the rich, the middling sort and the poor is reviewed. The specific adaptations demanded of domestic dwellings in the growing context of towns are also discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the examination of the historiography of finishing work in wood for architecture from the medieval to modern period, it is clear that this field of research is the poor relation of historical and archaeological studies, with the lion's share focusing on the structural work of carpentry. It is on the basis of this observation that the present work has been produced, which results from a conference held in Brussels in 2013. The work demonstrates first the real interest in an approach to finishing work for the study of ancient buildings and the establishment of a precise chronology for their phases of layout as well as in obtaining better understanding of material cultures and ways of living. Second, it reiterates that the limit between carpentry and joinery was often porous, sometimes artificial. Finally, the work stresses that an overall approach to the use of wood is crucial to comprehensively address the organisation of a building, the logic of its construction and its 'utilisation', and more generally, the complex history of the buildings studied. This work, which thus represents a first step toward an overall approach of 'wood material' in European architecture, includes thirteen contributions divided into two thematic sections in keeping with current research practices. The first addresses the divide between structural and finishing work via the question of flooring, ceiling and roofing techniques. The second focuses intrinsically on finishing work by examining the contribution of this craft domain to the organisation, comfort and ornamentation of houses.

Book excerpt: Imagine how future archaeologists will discover countless things we have thrown away: plastic and metal objects, discarded electronics, synthetic textiles, and other items that do not easily decompose; the leftovers of an age of rampant, imperishable objects. Today, in an economic system that revolves around producing and consuming such things, we now face how to deal with them in the challenges that lie ahead. The intrinsic design ideologies of sustainability and social responsibility are often not new. This book presents a history of socially committed design strategies within the Western tradition.

Book excerpt: "A new generation of designers has emerged which thinks beyond designing products. Fascinated by the faults in our social system, production system and the ecosystem, they employ design to tackle the big problems of our time. Designers are uniquely equipped to visualise alternatives and to harness technological innovations to answer social needs. This shift in mentality conceals a creative revolution: the transformative power of contemporary design.0This book brings together for the first time the work of more than fifty thinkers and inventors who have made a new engagement central to their work. Interviews with seven of them provide an insight into their thinking processes. This publication can be read as a manifesto for the creative spirit: the changemakers." -- publisher's description.
