Book excerpt: These vigorous lectures deal with some of the many ways in which the question of structure in poetry (here synonymous with the whole range of artistic creation in words) can be discussed. Criticism has never been, Professor Clare argues, a single discipline, but a collection of more and less distinct conceptual "languages," within any one of which a literary problem takes on a special solution. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Mid-Thirties, R.S. Crane, The Pivotal Critic Of The Chicago School, Launched A Crusade To Save The Humanities From Scientism As Much As From Partial And Onesided View Of Literature Being Held By The Then Prevailing Critical Approaches. He Pleaded For Critical Pluralism So That Different Approaches Could Be Judiciously Used To Come Out With A Comprehensive Idea Of Literature. In Place Of A Priori Road He Preferred To Take The A Posteriori Road Like Aris¬Totle So That Through Inductive Method After Threadbare Discussion Of Multivalent Entity Called Literature He Could Relate It To Other Cultural Activities. In This Attempt He Differed With The New Critics Of His Time And Distinguished Himself As An Important Signature Among The Modern Theorists Of Literature.Dr. (Mrs.) Tejinder Kaur Has Attempted In The Present Book A Perceptive Examination Of The Basic Assumptions Of R.S. Crane Which Have Gone Into The Formulations He Has Made On Literature As An Aesthetic Object And Also On The Theory Of Literature. Her Treatment Of The Theoretical Bases Of Crane S Criticism Is As Dependable As Her Assessment Of His Achievements As A Theorist In The World Of Today When All Kinds Of Theories Are Being Propounded To Confuse The Readers. The Students Of Modern Literature Of Literary Theory Will Find The Book Really Useful.

Hence, The Focus Of This Book Is On The Pluralistic Approach Of These Critics Who Were Aware Of The Powers And Limitations Of All The Critical Methods. Each Critical Method, Even The Aristotelian Method For Which They Developed A Bias, Addresses A Certain Range Of Questions Beyond Which It Loses Its Utility. No Critical Method, As They Point Out, Is All Embracing Critical System Of Critical Philosophy. Critics Having Exclusive Commitment To A Particular Critical System Are Bound To Be Partial Critics. So A Pluralistic Approach Should Be The Ideal One But, In Order To Be A Pluralistic Critic, A Student Of Literary Criticism Must Be Conversant With All The Major Critical Approaches. The Present Book Is Significant In The Sense That It Has The Capacity To Train Teachers And Students Of Literature In The Art Of Literary Appreciation That Enhances The Enjoyment Of Literary Works. Since Every Literary Piece Is A Constructed Whole, Aristotle S Method Provides Clues To Its Specific Constructive Principle Through A Process Of Regressive Reasoning The Aposteriori Approach. The Special Discussion Of The Chicago Method In This Book Explains The Aristotelian Bias Of The Chicago Critics Who Were Actually Neo-Aristotelians In A Limited Sense. They Began Where Aristotle Left Off To Pursue Similar Lines Of Study In The Poetics Of Modern Literature. As The Chicago School Of Criticism Is A Brilliant Exercise In Remedial Criticism, This Book May Serve As Materia Medica Of Critical Theories And Practices For Students And Teachers Of Literary Criticism.
Book Synopsis The Critical Theory of R.S. Crane and the Rhetoric of Fiction by : Roderick Daniel Derksen
Download or read book The Critical Theory of R.S. Crane and the Rhetoric of Fiction written by Roderick Daniel Derksen and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chapter I is concerned with the development of the critical theory of R.S. Crane. The discussion follows the pattern of Crane's own development from his attack on the insufficiency of critical principles, to elucidation and defense of his own neo-aristotelian principles of criticism, to the practical application of these principles. An analysis of the practical criticism of Maclean and Olson, 'Chicago critics' associated with Crane, and Crane himself in "The Concept of Plot and the Plot of Tom Jones", indicates that when the principles Crane expounds are applied to the work, they lead to serious shortcomings in practical critical judgement. The central question is whether these shortcomings are inherent in the critical principles applied. With this question in mind the discussion turns to the practical criticism of Wayne C, Booth in his The Rhetoric of Fiction. Chapter II attempts to establish the relationship between the critical theory of R.S. Crane and the practical criticism of Wayne C. Booth by introducing as many kinds of evidence as possible. The most important evidence offered is a brief analysis of The Rhetoric of Fiction in an attempt to show that Booth's essential critical principles are derived from Crane. Chapter III continues with a more comprehensive analysis of the critical concepts which Booth applies to fiction in an attempt to show that at each of the four points where Crane fails to adequately apply his own critical principles to practical judgements. Booth refines these principles and applies them with a demonstrated responsiveness and sensitivity to the literary work. The value of the neo-aristotelian criticism of R.S. Crane can only be fairly assessed in terms of its complete development and application in The Rhetoric of Fiction.

Book Synopsis Seductive Reasoning by : Ellen Rooney
Download or read book Seductive Reasoning written by Ellen Rooney and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seductive Reasoning takes a provocative look at contemporary Anglo-American literary theory, calling into question the critical consensus on pluralism's nature and its status in literary studies. Drawing on the insights of Marxist and feminist critical theory and on the works of Althusser, Derrida, and Foucault, Rooney reads the pluralist’s invitation to join in a "dialogue" as a seductive gesture. Critics who respond find that they must seek to persuade all of their potential readers. Rooney examines pluralism as a form of logic in the work of E. D. Hirsch, as a form of ethics for Wayne Booth, as a rhetoric of persuasion in the books of Stanley Fish. For Paul de Man, Rooney argues, pluralism was a rhetoric of tropes just as it was, for Fredric Jameson, a form of politics.

This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last half of the twentieth century has seen the emergence of literary theory as a new discipline. As with any body of scholarship, various schools of thought exist, and sometimes conflict, within it. I.R. Makaryk has compiled a welcome guide to the field. Accessible and jargon-free, the Encyclopedia of Contemporary Literary Theory provides lucid, concise explanations of myriad approaches to literature that have arisen over the past forty years. Some 170 scholars from around the world have contributed their expertise to this volume. Their work is organized into three parts. In Part I, forty evaluative essays examine the historical and cultural context out of which new schools of and approaches to literature arose. The essays also discuss the uses and limitations of the various schools, and the key issues they address. Part II focuses on individual theorists. It provides a more detailed picture of the network of scholars not always easily pigeonholed into the categories of Part I. This second section analyses the individual achievements, as well as the influence, of specific scholars, and places them in a larger critical context. Part III deals with the vocabulary of literary theory. It identifies significant, complex terms, places them in context, and explains their origins and use. Accessibility is a key feature of the work. By avoiding jargon, providing mini-bibliographies, and cross-referencing throughout, Makaryk has provided an indispensable tool for literary theorists and historians and for all scholars and students of contemporary criticism and culture.
