Mentre Venezia regolava con la sua diplomazia e le sue flotte le relazioni con la Sublime Porta in quello che considerava il suo Golfo, nell’Adriatico meridionale e nelle zone litoranee pugliesi era in corso tra XV e XVII secolo una guerra fatta di continui sbarchi di turchi e corsari, provenienti dall’Albania, che mettevano a sacco città, masserie, monasteri e santuari. Torri e castelli furono eretti per proteggere le città, il territorio fu militarizzato, la nobiltà feudale e quella urbana furono impegnate in operazioni di contenimento della minaccia turca. In tali frangenti l’Albania, soprattutto la parte rimasta cristiana, fu vista dalle autorità ispano-napoletane come un baluardo contro i turchi e la Chiesa si impegnò in azioni che miravano a rafforzare quelle popolazioni nella loro fede, nella convinzione che, prima o poi, esse si sarebbero ribellate ai loro dominatori. Questo non avvenne, ma nei primi decenni del Novecento l’Italia unita, riscopertasi potenza adriatica, rivendicò un suo ruolo politico in Albania e nel 1939 riuscì a insediarsi nel paese delle aquile. Allora ritenne di aver vendicato gli «oltraggi» subiti dalle popolazioni rivierasche pugliesi negli anni ormai lontani che erano seguiti al sacco di Otranto (1480).
