Book excerpt: This publication presents a proposed policy on the regulation of formulants (any substance other than an active ingredient) contained in pest control products. It first outlines key elements of the policy, definitions of terms, and the legal authority for the policy. It then proposes classification of formulants into categories ranging from formulants of toxicological concern to formulants of minimum concern. Regulatory actions on formulants currently in use in Canada are reviewed and options for registrants are set out for each category. The policy also outlines labelling requirements; acceptance criteria for dyes, colorants, fragrances, or oils used as formulants; changes concerning formulants allowable by notification; and regulatory actions for new formulants in Canadian pest control products, including data requirements for registration.

Book excerpt: "In May 2009, the Government of Canada, through the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) of Health Canada, asked the Council of Canadian Academies to appoint an expert panel to answer the question, "What is the scientific status of the use of integrated testing strategies in the human and environmental regulatory risk assessment of pesticides?" The charge to the Panel was further specified in a series of sub-questions: [1] What is the state of the science of the tools and data sources associated with integrated testing strategies? [2] What is the current status of the use of integrated testing strategies for the risk assessment of pesticides, pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals, and other chemical substances by regulatory agencies around the world? [3] Could there be potential impacts on the public's perception and confidence in regulatory risk assessment and risk management decisions for pesticides if integrated testing strategies were implemented?"--P. xiii-xiv.

Book Synopsis International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-04-29 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this guidance on fulfilling the reporting requirements of Article 12 of the Code of Conduct is to obtain a regular flow of information on its observance to strengthen implementation of the Code, to provide data for its future revisions and improvement, and, most importantly, to improve the protection of human health and the environment related to pesticide use and management in agriculture and public health. The guidance was prepared in compliance with the FAO/WHO International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management, which sets out a framework and voluntary standards of conduct for stakeholders in pesticide management, in particular governments and the pesticide industry. Endorsed by FAO, WHO, governments, pesticide producers, non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders, the Code outlines their shared responsibility to promote best practice and risk reduction throughout the pesticide life cycle. The Code of Conduct thereby establishes the commitment and moral obligation of stakeholders to comply with the agreed standards of conduct and to assume their respective responsibilities. These include governments’ responsibility to promote pesticide risk reduction and the industry’s responsibility to produce products that are adapted to the context of their use and to provide stewardship of those products throughout their life cycle. This guidance was prepared with the support of the FAO/WHO Joint Meeting on Pesticide Management (JMPM) to provide further guidance on the provisions of the Code of Conduct related to its observance and implementation. It reflects the joint FAO/WHO approach to pesticide management, thus addressing the topic in both agricultural and public health settings.

Book Synopsis International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management - Guidance on Pesticide Legislation - Second edition by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management - Guidance on Pesticide Legislation - Second edition written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-10-09 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the guidelines is to provide guidance to governments that seek to review, update or design national pesticide legislation. It should be emphasized, however, that legislation alone cannot ensure effective pesticide management and adequate protection of the environment and public health. Governments will need to have in place the necessary institutional infrastructure for registering pesticides and enforcing legislation. Further, governments also need effective supporting policies and tools to promote sustainable pest and pesticide management. This may include promoting Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and Integrated Vector Management (IVM) through training programmes and incentive schemes, increasing availability and use of low risk products, fostering scientific research, carrying out public education campaigns and providing training for inspectors, retailers and professional users. A solid legislative framework should underpin the selected institutional framework, policies and tools. This document supersedes the Guidelines for Legislation on the Control of Pesticides of 1989.
Book Synopsis Health Effects and Pesticide Perception as Determinants of Pesticide Use by : Susmita Dasgupta
Download or read book Health Effects and Pesticide Perception as Determinants of Pesticide Use written by Susmita Dasgupta and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In a recent survey of 820 Boro (winter rice), potato, bean, eggplant, cabbage, sugarcane, and mango farmers in Bangladesh, over 47 percent of farmers were found to be overusing pesticides. With only 4 percent of farmers formally trained in pesticide use or handling, and over 87 percent openly admitting to using little or no protective measures while applying pesticides, overuse is potentially a threatening problem to farmer health as well as the environment. To model pesticide overuse, the authors used a 3-equation, trivariate probit framework, with health effects and misperception of pesticide risk as endogenous dummy variables. Health effects (the first equation) were found to be strictly a function of the amount of pesticides used in production, while misperception of pesticide risk (the second equation) was determined by health impairments from pesticides and the toxicity of chemicals used. Pesticide overuse (the third equation) was significantly determined by variation in income, farm ownership, the toxicity of chemicals used, crop composition, and geographical location. The results highlight the necessity for policymakers to design effective and targeted outreach programs that deal specifically with pesticide risk, safe handling, and averting behavior. Ideally, the approach would be participatory in nature to address key informational gaps, as well as increasing a farmers' awareness retention. The results also point to specific crops and locations experiencing a higher prevalence of overuse-bean and eggplant in general-and overall production in the districts of Chapainawabganj, Chittagong, Comilla, Jessore, Narshingdi, Rajshahi, and Rangpur. Focusing efforts in these crop and geographical areas may have the most measurable effects on pesticide overuse. "--World Bank web site.
